Making an original TV drama definitely sounds tough. They also need the script and all the parts right to get it done.

Episode definitely put pressure on Akiyama. I like the idea this show is going forward to though. It brings out the best of competition and ideas together. Not going to lie, I also like An more in these recent episodes. She has a fierce personality and not afraid to stand up to anyone.

And here we see Hana-chan in her natural habitat.

But anyway, you could practically taste the positive family atmosphere during that breakfast section, wow ... and when Matsuyuki looked at that poster of Shura, i thought and maybe i'm wrong here .. are they related ? I wonder if there's gonna be more of that, or that was it.

I think we can now confirm that Saionji Shura is Matsuyuki's older sister from the moment when he looked at that poster and the text messages about the stage play in Kyoto.

“We can’t let you become a failure like your sister and brother” is crazy dawg some people don’t need to have kids. Guess who’s to blame for those “failures”! You!! And the thing is, assuming that’s Matsuyuki’s sister, she’s literally a fucking actress. What more could you want as a parent than for your kids to be happy healthy and successful. I’m kinda getting some “the colors within” vibes from their family since they want everyone to become doctors.

Who knew so much thought needed to go into choosing a reading for competition? The audience’s feelings, your voice, the pacing, the phrasing etc etc. that was really eye opening, but glad Hana found something she likes! Lmao at Hana saying she likes Tonyaki and An just don’t give a fuck 🤣

Hana reading to the kids is so cute awww

Uh oh I foresee some drama with Matsuyuki’s sister and his family and him balancing his goals for the future with what his family want. This arc should be fun

It was nice seeing Hana reading to local children again and even more nice that the others from the broadcasting club came to see her performance.

So Shura Saionji is Akiyama's sis ?! 🙀🙀
I guess it's also one of the reasons why Akiyama became fascinated with Hana's voice. Natsue clearly can't hide the jealousy..😅😅
I guess Toga and Natsue would be a fine pair to ship. After all the constant bickering at each other, they really do get along well. 😄😄❤️
Akiyama's parents are so terrible. They're putting so much pressure on him but he always hides his feelings under a smile. When Saionji has achieved a lot at her age, her parents seem to be disappointed with her for not being good at studies.😔😔

The doctor situation is quite serious, since his family is the only doctor in the island, if he doesn't become a doctor then the island would be doctorless.

So it looks like Akiyama's older sister is a successful actress but their father apparently wanted her to become a doctor so therefore she's a "failure." On that note I suspect that his parents are pushing him to be a doctor although I don't quite understand why he's in the broadcasting club, maybe they don't care what club he's in so as long as he excels.

Regarding Hana, it's nice that she picked a section to read that her teacher approved of and I think she's on her way to doing well in the NHK cup. Meanwhile Natsue is struggling with her broadcast script and appears to be jealous of Hana getting attention from Akiyama, hopefully Natsue doesn't sabotage herself.

@phantomfandom I think you are misunderstanding here, Hana our heroine lives on a remote island, but she attends the school on the mainland.

Looks like I'm not the only one who believes that Saionji Shura is Matsuyuki's sister, especially with that message he received. But it's disappointing that her parents consider being an actress a failure; what a narrow perspective. It's interesting to learn more about the other characters.

As I've said before, Kichijouji is a great counselor. The way he plays to the students' strengths while respecting their preferences and choices to help them choose the best passage for them is really commendable.

I'm glad An is getting along better with Hana; it's refreshing to see them conversing without An crossing any lines. It was a lovely episode, ending with that story for the kids.

So I was wonder is Saionji Shura, Akiyama's older sister? I mean the last name is different but possible still maybe?

So this episode we got focus on Akiyama. His family just sucks it seems. Father seems to consider anything but becoming a doctor a failure which is dumb as hell. Still I guess as long as his grades are good they don't mind him joining a club I guess. Surprised these kind of parents even let him join in the first place.

With the help of Kichijouji-sensei, Hana has selected her passage in Aoi Haru wo Kazoete, which includes her favorite line from the story,

"But if you don't try to communicate, you'll never get anywhere."
"でも、伝えようとしなきゃ、なんにも始まらないんだよ"
"Demo, tsutaeyou to shinakiya, nannimo hajimaranai dayo"

It's revealed in the final scenes that Akiyama's older sister is none other than Saionji Shura, who was essentially disowned and deemed a failure by the parents for simply not going down the doctor path.

Akiyama was the most plain of the main cast in my eyes so I'm glad that this episode gave him some depth. While I thought the first four episodes were a bit rocky it does feel like the show has begun to pick up, hopefully it's able to maintain this quality for the remainder of the runtime.

Assuming Saionji Shura is actually Matsuyuki's older sister, It would explain why she was in such a hurry with the monetizing her works right after winning the national championship. She must've cut ties with her parents and was determined to financially independent.

It's just nice listening to "voice acting" that these talented voice actors trained and honed for years. A little disappointed that I didn't get to hear her storybook reading in full.

I think I'll have to let go of my expectations for a Sound! Euphonium successor...

Speaking of voice actors, Hana's mom has the strangest voice. She kind of sounds like someone from a 50's Japanese movie.

Interesting new drama element added with the glasses guy, he's the brother of the previous contest winner and his family controlling him, this is the exactly what i was waiting for, the character depth drama writing I've seen in "Euphonium", so many people missing on this anime because they do no research.

My anime experience tells me the brother TEXT message got from his sister says she got extra tickets for "family and friends", he probably gonna take only Hana or the others as well so they'll get to experience what a winner sounds like.

More on the character writing, i love how the teacher sounds pushy but he actually cares deeply about his students and perhaps talks in that way to encourage them to push themselves and do what they want to do, not what others tell them even if he sounds like he trying to tell them what's better for them at first, he makes them speak out and say what they want, he then in advance already knows where to direct them so they'll find a solution that they accept themselves.

It's different than it started off to be and the plot is no longer focused reading to the audience good written material, it is too focused and this "competition" and the side stories it is causing between the characters.

I loved this show for it's open reading of poetry and written works, not for the "drama" the club would have.

Bring back the best part in reading the written material to the audience.
Note: I don’t lazily watch 3-5 episodes, biasedly compare to other anime, or unfairly judge by surface level similarities. With every anime I start, I watch the entire series, both Japanese Sub & English Dub, then judge each anime based on what they present, to give an honest and fair rating.

Why do I have a feeling that glasses-kun Akiyama is related to Saionji? Their parents probably divorced and he took another surname.

Like with many other users here, I'm thinking it's a safe bet that Saionji Shura and Akiyama's older sister. By the looks of it, she's a pretty successful actress, but Akiyama's father does proclaim his older son and daughter to be "failures". I'm guessing they're labeled like that because they both went down different career paths instead of becoming doctors, so it would make sense for Akiyama to have a lot of pressure on his shoulders to go down the route his parents wants him to.

Kichijoji is a pretty good counselor for the club. With his experience, he goes down to the finer details for his advice for what he should think Hana should read from her book that she's chosen, but still fully respects what she wants to choose for herself. It's helped to give Hana the confidence she needs, considering how pleased she was about it afterwards when talking with An.

The performance itself isn't far away, although knowing more about Akiyama's family situation is something I want to know more of. I can see more drama around the corner for him and the others, that's for sure.

I liked how this episode had us see Hana's growth. I still hate this show mostly because I can't stand the "I don't think I can do it" trope because it's so over used nowadays. It's all because My Hero Academia and Dragon Ball Z/Super are so popular that we need more of "I don't think I can do it" trope and it's so boring and stupid. I'm glad we're past this finally and hopefully we don't return to this trope for awhile.
