does Vagabond really needs to be animated?

This isn't exactly brand-news, and this topic has been written down before, but i came across this article and i thought of sharing, and query, with the community.

‘Vagabond’ Anime Adaptation

Vagabond manga is a magnum-opus, and the idea of an animation, particularly by a non-Japanese studio, is a reluctant one.

What are your thoughts?

Technically, no manga "needs" to be animated. That's just a form of speech people use when they really want this or that manga to be animated.

In regards to Fortiche Studio's desire to animate Vagabond, this isn't an idea I am too keen on. I liked their work on Arcane, but I can't deny I prefer 2D over Fortiche's 3D, especially when it comes to a Japanese historical manga like Vagabond.

Also, the thread title name is very misleading to its actual content, with its actual content being Fortiche's aforementioned desire, something that was already discussed in the sub-forum. And your knowledge of it makes this thread even more pointless.

I don't think there is studio out there that is good enough to animate a story like Vagabond.

IMO no if it’s gonna be another Bersek 2016 then fk that it’ll be a waste of resources to make it anyways if the series does not end up looking as good as the manga which won’t ever happen as Inoue’s art is very hard to replicate cuz bro’s just too talented for his own good.

Make it like Vinland saga animation.

To do the art justice would take more money and effort than any studio would be willing/able to provide. We could get a good OST out of it, but I really have no faith in an anime living up to the manga.

There is the live action Samurai Trilogy from 1954 starring Toshiro Mifune who starred in a lot of Kurosawa films. It predates the manga, but it's based on the same novel that the manga is based on.

he played Mushashi before, He can play it again!!
But I guess considering his age, he wouldnt be suitable. Atleast it wouldnt look good!!

I wouldnt trust anybody but Horoyuki Sanada to produce a live action adaptation of Vagabond, even if he doesnt play the MC.

Geez!! Berserk 2016 is living rent free up your head!! Move on!!
There have been good CG adaptations from Japanese studios. Especially studio Orange. and Studio 4°C's works on berserk looks much better.

Live action would be better, it would just be able to capture to better than an anime imo, like the kingdom movies, they are so gooood, literally brings the series to life

And if it is to be animated, I'd rather it be cgi than anything, maybe by a studio like digital frontier, their work on gantz was pretty good, and even besides that, they have pretty good track record, toei would be fine too, they have been doing some great stuff with cgi

Yes make it a realistic looking cgi movie at this point.

I think it should be animated to achieve other public, vagabond has a lot to offer, it would be a waste if such magnificent story stay restricted to just one kind of source

I would want Inoue to come back and actually complete the manga before that happened. (I don’t wanna hear about the exhibition chapter, that’s not the proper conclusion I’m referring to. Especially considering the cliffhanger we left off on, starting a new arc). Tho I wouldn’t mind it if instead of finishing it through the manga, he worked with whichever studio adapts it to deliver the rest of the story through the anime.

no

not even a matter of popularity, profit, or animation
i just cant see that kind of story being executed well as an anime

still if it does happen (which i doubt it will) i'd be down to see it

I'd say it's fine as it is staying just a manga.
in my opinion, when making anime, you have to appeal to the general audience, which for anime is less mature and needs quick-paced action.
vagabond is more about philosophy and maturing as a human, this concept doesn't fly well with kids lol
anyway, it's a good idea to bring up these conversations once in a while to see how other peoples views have changed, as well as what the newcomers think

actually did this for once lol
you appreciate the author's work more that way, at least with a serious, philosophical work such as this

Calm tf down bro I only used Berserk 2016 as an example of what we can expect as a worst case scenario lol and studio Orange is busy with other projects at the moment I’d want them to renew Houseki no kuni for another season rather than try to adapt something as grand as Vagabond.

The French studio that animated Arcane said that they wanted to animate Vagabond. If this were to happen, It could turn out to be one of the greatest pieces of animated fiction EVER. (If done right, of course)

the people saying no are just oblivious and scared. I'd say go for it, cuz there ain't nothing that can't be animated and if it clicks, it's gonna be the best piece of art to ever exist

Like someone above said, no manga ‘needs’ to be animated. But there’s no reason why it shouldn’t be animated. If there’s a fear of it not living up to the expectations, the reward of the adaptation being successful far outweighs the risk therefore justifying it. If people were too scared to tarnish the name of Vinland saga, AoT etc, we would’ve never gotten these masterpieces in anime format which would’ve been a huge loss. In some cases, the successful adaptation of a popular manga can lead to inspiration or influence adaptation decisions in the future. For example, although there was a big time period in between the 2, I believe without the success of monster we would’ve never seen Pluto being animated, and with both being big successes, it greatly influences the chances of urusawa’s other masterpieces to be adapted, which would’ve otherwise been very unlikely. Plus the popularity that comes around from an adaptation can only be a good thing. The increased profit margins helps build the anime industry, maybe you don’t see that reflect in animators’ pays but at the very least it allows companies to expand production, build more studios and take on more projects. Ofcourse it also allows for a more diverse selection of anime available for viewers. Of course there’s the argument of popularity ruining the reputation cos of the fandom etc which is complete bullshit and doesn’t even come close to comparing to all the positives. If you’ve got such a problem then stop living your life on social media.
