Machida, eager to impress his estranged son during a rare reunion, takes him out for goby fishing. Tsunehiro and the others warmly watch over them.

However, news of a giant black sea bream sighting takes events in an unexpected direction.

Manager-kun was so worried about what to do with his son during that little of free time they had together that he forgot that at the end of the day the kid just wanted to be with his dad, just like the old times.

I like (but not love) how this episode doesn't sugarcoat the very soul of the man. Yes, he would love to live with his son again, but his life is dedicated to fishing, that's probably why divorce happen in the first place, it might not be because his wife leave him, it's probably because he leaves his wife and his son so that he can enjoy fishing to the fullest. He immediately becomes happy again when he think about fishing plan tomorrow.

You can tell Manager-kun really loves his son and just wants to be apart of his life.

Although Machida has become closer to his son, I still think that if he wants things to get better, he should focus more on him than on fishing. I relate more to his son because of my own experience. No matter how difficult things get, all you want is for everyone to get back to spending time together as a family, and gifts or money mean very little, they just use it as a way to forget about that problem.

The manager gets his episode now. I can see why this guy's marriage failed. I assume he cared more about fish than his wife. His son Yuu-kun, on the other hand, kicks ass. The divorce probably put him through hell, so he comes out on the other end being incredibly mature and independent for a 9 year old. Keep going, little guy.

-Sasaki actually earns a feat here by being the one to suggest goby fishing.
-Ice shapeshifts into her cosplayer proportions.
-Manager will fish more with Arua and/or Sasaki in the future and probably end up seeing them as replacement sons.

Very rare that an anime portrays a situation where a kid gets to see the parent without custody after divorce. There are a few shows this year where the kid hasn't seen the parent for YEARS, one where the kid thinks the dad may be dead, one where the daughter doesn't even know the identity of her father.

Damn this episode had me in feels. There are often things that you want to say but are left unsaid in real world which you just let go of. This was one of the most realistic portrayals of that. Even though you don't like it life must go on, shown as Machida goes back fishing tomorrow because it's his way of coping with it.

Man what’s up with these emotional ass slice of life show episodes today. First Kekkon suru tte and now this? Really beautiful story with Machida and his son and just goes to show you, kids don’t care about the bs excuses for why you haven’t been there in the past, they still just want their parents.

Obviously Machida isn’t a deadbeat dad, it’s clear he loves his son, but I think he’d agree he hasn’t done as much as he probably should have in terms of being there for his son’s big milestones. The fishing trip was a nice way for them to bond and start off a new foot and actually really realistic because a lot of dads take their boys fishing. Few things encourage positive male relationships better than a good old fishing trip, so wholesome to see both of them do anything to avoid the outing ending 😩

Idk if there’s a happy ending in sight with the ex wife, but certainly hope Machida is able to spend more quality with his son like this

Not directly related to Tsunehiro

A father and son activity. Initially, it felt that there is some gap between them due to the divorce but their relationship improved a bit as the episode went on.

First episode where I've actually REALLY REALLY liked this show. Fishing isn't all that exciting to watch, but this was a really great episode.
