Well, this kinda escalated quickly at least in terms of storytelling and plot. The past background story aside, we come to know Mai in the present timeline.

She can be a little annoying as a kid but also expected at someone her age. The adults in this anime are quite normal. Despite the emotional drama in the opening segments, this has mostly a light humor tone. It's a decent start for what it has to work with imo.

Ah yes, elementary schoolers. We know them. We also know that it isn't really right to uh, you know, have a certain relationship with them. Although many animes do it, this one just stands out for one certain reason, that fucking name. "If My Wife Becomes an Elementary School Student." It doesn't really get much worse than that lmao. Sadly, they did change the name so the Japenese abbreviation, so eh.

Enough about the name though, because off the bat this doesn't seem like a joke of an anime like the original title made it out to be, it already decided to hit you right in the feels, with killing the main dude's wife.... that's not where it ends though, ofc. Because she gets FUCKIG REINCARANATED???? And as, you already know, an elementary school student. And lols, I already love her already. That attitude she has is just so funny to see in an elementary school student of all people xD

Though, rest of the episode is just SOL, as I would have expected, and very much would like it to be. That final scene was so beautiful, and because of it I'm now hooked for this show.

Title may be VERY misleading, but trust me, this is a ride you don't want to miss.

Mangaka Yayu Murata's work, it's such a shame that Twitter twats have to read the title in a very wrong way, where it's in fact a wholesome show about grief, loss and moving on.

pachae's OP is decent but fun, but it's Ms. OOJA's ED that really gets me the most.

The life of salaryman Keisuke Niijima, developing a relationship with his co-worker that became a happy relationship, him and Koga Takae with their newborn Mai is the depictment of such a family. But with the death of his wife 10 years later in an accident, it's only the father and daughter themselves living under one roof...until an elementary school girl comes along, proclaiming that she's their mother in name.

Yes, it's hard to acknowledge that the same elementary school girl is Takae reincarnated, but her behaviour and personality shows that she's still their loving mother. Even if she lives under a different roof than them, Keisuke having to love her as she is, but not to a point where he can be seen as a loli-lover.

Takae's lunch bentos are unmistakable to said husband, and his colleagues like Konomi Moriya understand his plight, but getting a phone for the schoolgirl, Keisuke can be mistaken by having her picture be set as his wallpaper lols. But of everything, Keisuke still sees Takae all the same, no matter if she's the wife that's now in a child's body. Of course, having Moriya make a bento for him is a necessity, though he'll always prefer Takae's without second thoughts.

As a manga reader, this is exactly the adaptation that I was looking for, even if it looks cheap. Hope y'all give the show a second chance, because it's NOT anything like you've seen.

Nice start. This isn't your usual premise for a slice of life romance. No remarkable production value to speak of yet like my Clueless First Friend is has that comfy charm and some mild melancholy going for it.

So will he live in a forever sexless marriage now or what's it gonna be? Would be sad for a man who's far from old. Yet the optics would also be super bad if he touched her >_>

Excellent beginning episode! Takae was a beloved and lovely wife and mother and is a beautiful soul who earned a blessing. Marika brought Takae back and added cuteness. Commencing the mission to put Keisuke and Mai lives back on rails!

@MyllerPhiem Yeah I had the same questions. My thinking is something will happen to their memories (either he and the daughter) or Takae. I get she's there to help them, especially him, move on, but maybe she shouldn't have divulged who she was. * shrug *

I'm not sure I'll finish watching it or watch weekly, but so far so good.

@dragynfaerie Yeah, it might have been better if Takae had just helped her husband without disclosing who she was. Could just play the role of a friendly girl and maybe, if necessary, write letters that tell her husband what to do, as well as her daughter.

Personally, I wouldn't see anything wrong with him and her getting intimate, she has the mind of a, what, 40 yo-woman. But we all know that's not gonna happen. And all the alternatives are not exactly happy ends, either. Curious what's gonna happen.

I wanted to pick this up, but after episode one the logistics are already bothering me.

1 - random 10 y/o is constantly away from home, and wouldn't the parents notice ingredients just disappearing? Wack.
2 - Already a love triangle blooming? yeehhhh not a big fan. And the timing is oh so perfect, he gets a young girl's bento at the same time his wife comes back? wack.

Not feeling it.

Hope y'all enjoy tho, feel free to @me if it gets better or is worth picking back up

@EmmyMoomin That's actually a problem right there for me: The husband has been such a whimp from the beginning that it doesn't have the emotional power seeing him cry over losing his wife. They should have played this more seriously instead of the comedy angle they went for. Then seeing him cry would have been a real gut punch.

I know that the translated title alone is going to cause many raised eyebrows, but give the first episode a chance, or at least watch the PV, then you should see that this series seems more wholesome than it looks.

Studio Signpost did a nice job with My Clueless First Friend, so it was one of the reasons as to why I've checked this series out and, aside from the slightly fast pace, it was a pretty enjoyable first episode. It had its sad moments, but with how Takae is back in reincarnation form, she definitely helped Keisuke and Mai to get out of their awkward and depressing lifestyle and face everyday life with newfound confidence.

Moriya, Keisuke's work colleague, was nice enough to comment on his happier change and is now bento buddies with him. The fact that she lives alone, most likely single, does make me curious if things between them will change, but then again, I could be reading into it too much. We'll have to see in the later episodes.

Overall, this was a pretty good effort, so I do look forward to seeing how this story will go, regardless if it goes further into wholesome or drama territory.

First Blue Box and now this. That's 2 anime that had their first 2 episodes released on the same day this season. Wonder why.

Thanks to Twitter keyboard warriors and their unwillingness to read the actual synopsis, I discovered this show. And it seems genuinely wholesome and interesting. It seems like a more serious version of what happens in Kyokai no Rinne. Which is saying something cause this is still a comedy anime. Shows just how crazy Rumiko Takahashi series' can get.

Anyway, the beginning scene with Keisuke meeting his future wife was really cool. I liked how they handled their life together in such a brief moment. Slightly reminded me of Up but of course that movie's still in a league of its own.

It's interesting that Takae's daughter is a working adult. I thought she might be a school student but I'm kinda glad she isn't. This might make things more interesting as both the dad and his daughter are adults. So the only minor is the mom. That sounds weird out of context.

Ig Moriya is being set up as a potential new love interest for Keisuke. She looks and sounds a bit too much like his dead wife. Wonder how that will turn out.

So far this got me hooked. Hopefully it'll be a good anime.

Okay....so the epsiode was really wholesome and I felt it. I know that on one glance the plot may look weird and people may get the wrong idea but If you dive deep into it then the plot is wholesome not weird.
The character interactions were heartwarming especially that bento scene at the last. I am definitely going to follow this anime.

I loved it! This episode was amazing!!! <3 But the start really hit me. Everything was so full of joy, and then, out of nowhere, it was like that happiness was ripped away, and everything turned gray.

It gave me chills and really made me stop and think.

So, I’m so glad that the joy and happiness from the beginning came back. ❤️

I don't know if I should say it's wholesome or weird, but the protagonist's appearance and his way of being certainly don't help much...

Obviously it's made to generate that "double meaning" but it's still a bit uncomfortable instead of funny...

EP 1

So. to be honest. im not very optimistic about this anime
Also it seems ep 2 is out already hurr. i mean we'll see how ep 1 looks like
So the premise of the story is that 10 years ago waifu reincarnated and now in present day she's 10 years old
And uh

This ep itself, some cring moments here and there. Like even though its 20 mins long it kinda felt like its missing something? I guess thats why they decided to have ep 2 on the same day.
As usual ep 1 is kinda mediocre if I have to say

I wasnt expecting daughter to be 20 already though

Anyway, waifu is voiced by yuki aoi, it would have been super obvious even if I didnt know beforehand. Im kinda curious how it would have been like if it was someone else. For better or otherwise she kinda overshadows the anime?
Like, even though she's the title character she doesnt actually show up for a fair bit. So far anyway.

The pacing felt a bit fast, especially the first half until the reunion with the wife could've been an entire episode imo, but the emotional impact was still decent. The wife's parents are probably thinking that she really likes her new friends with how much time she spends lol.

Reminds me of a certain episode from the classic anime "Hell Teacher Nube" where the mother was reincarnated into a little girl. But in Nube's story it was more of a relation with the mother & her son, climaxing with the mother finally moving. That one was more emotional in just one episode but here was kinda low for me. Still were just in the beginning & too early.
I`ll follow this series more.

I feel like the episode is too much straight to the point (?)... like, the montage with his married life is ok... then the woman die, there's like one scene to show how miserable his life is now, and the reencarned wife immediately appears and they immediately buy it, everything is good again... (all that in half an episode)

idk, maybe could benefit from a little more build up, specially with his current situation... the dude and the daughter seem to not been that close anymore (I'm guessing, from the cold way they speak to each other and the silence while eating, before the wife reappear)... this could have be a good thing for the wife to help them with, but the moment she shows up isn't an issue anymore

well, gonna keep watching for the curiosity about what the story will work on

@KANLen09 in terms of the title, I looked it up, and the original title translated, reads “my wife will become an elementary school student“ which isn’t really a drastic change to be quite honest. I know there was a lot of uproar about it, but compare that to “if my wife becomes an elementary school student“ is it really that much of a difference?

And I’ve not read the manga either, so I can’t really quote on the original source material. Not yet anyways.

Well, I’ve been hearing about a lot of uproar about this series, and that is the reason why I have been mostly staying off of social media for a while, so I don’t get dragged in to that BS, and get pulled into the drama. I read the description, heard some rational commentary on it, and saw the PV, and I decided for myself that I would check it out.

And it certainly didn’t disappoint! As someone said, the initial opening minutes of the first episode escalated quite quickly! And despite that, it didn’t feel rushed. And it was really nice to see Keisuke go from doom and gloom for 10 years, to being a happy cheerful guy again, though it was due to the most unlikely “turning around” situation you could possibly imagine! And Mai also did a pleasant turnaround too. And I also agree with Takae that you shouldn’t be all homebound when in your 20s, the prime of your adult life, at least in terms of finding a romantic partner. I mean, I support remote work, but you all have to get out often!

And what’s this? There’s a coworker that looks like she may be showing interest in Keisuke. Yeah, today it’s “bento buddies“, but who knows what it’s going to be tomorrow? I can only imagine what Takae’s reaction would be if she finds out about this. Again, I didn’t read the manga so I don’t know.

All and all, a very good start to this series, and I will definitely be looking forward to the next episode! Not now, because it’s too late, but definitely tomorrow!
