For the anime itself, the gore was all it had going for it. For the game though, definitely the story :)

Obviously the gore lol, It was something that left me perplexed for several days, I never imagined that 4 episodes could be so impactful (and disgusting.😭

Story of Corpse Party is honestly not that great. Characters do a lot of idiotic decisions and are unlikable. Especially in the VN. On top of that, this anime adaptation was made only for those who already played the game, because without prior knowledge viewers will have no idea what is happening.
It is mostly known for it's very detailed and gruesome deaths, especially those three kids.

Probably I'll be the only one to say this but honestly I really enjoyed the plot and it's twists. However, my answer may be heavily affected by the fact that I've completed all the games in the series so I'm quite familiar with the story. So yeah, I'd say 50/50.

the gore was so bad for my 12 year old ass that it left me traumatized for 3 or 4 days lol good to say that i remember all the gore scenes perfectly as for the story ig I remember the important bits but yeah gore is more strong than the story in this anime

The anime adaptation is almost certainly remembered predominantly for the gore. It's a short OVA with 4 episodes where the story can be epitomised pretty much exclusively by the premise, with only the murder culprit themselves being a continuous subject of intrigue.
