I read about it somewhere so I checked it out and its rating was really high so I thought of giving a shot but then I came to know that it has a prequel too with 37 volumes. So is reading the prequel necessary or it can be read as a standalone manga

Nah you don’t need to read SJG to read GTO. I read GTO before the prequel and its not like youre missing out on anything outside of how Onizuka met Ryuji, Saejima etc.

It can be read as a standalone, and that's how nearly everyone around the world have read it. The previous Mangas are about his past as a delinquent, and are not really the subject of this one.

I read GTO without having read the first part of the manga, and I enjoyed it just fine, so if you are not interested in the first part, I don't think you have to read it.

You don't need to read Prequel at all, but you would understand Onizuka's friendship with his old friends and some references to the prequel a bit better if you do read SJG.

Hi man, I'm surprised to actually be the first one to really suggest you consider reading SJG first. it's not just that its better in order to understand more of the past of Eikichi, but there's in particular one central plot point and you are not going to get it (not saying anything more to avoid you any spoiler).
Apart from that, feel free to start with GTO, you can still read it first, but trust me, you are going to miss quite something.
Besides, Shonan Junai Gumi is such a great manga (especially in the second half).
If you have any question feel free to ask!

Yes you should, the GTO manga has references to old characters from Shonan Junai Gumi etc.
It’s not like the anime where it feels mostly stand alone.

It’s kinda late, but I just had to recommend SJG. It’s not necessary, but to some characters they talk about in GTO, you wouldn’t understand without SJG. Also, in general SJG I think was a really good manga that might start iffy for some people, but some arcs are as good as GTO later on. Definitely underrated since most people who read GTO didn’t read SJG.

@Sir432 No, it's not late. I've been reading other mangas and only read the first chapter of gto. Thanks for the info btw, I'll read sjg before gto.
