How did Taki and mitsuha when swapping bodies didn't notice which year they are, like they both used phones to leave notes for each other so how did they not notice or do Japanese phone do not show year? Or I'm just an idiot to notice this thing?

My phone also doesn’t show the year. Besides even if it did it would be easy to miss because I think someone in their situation trying to process a whole new reality wouldn’t mind checking calendars.

I mean it's weird enough that they were swapping bodies so they didn't notice at all

Like others said, my phone doesn’t show the year for me. And even if it did, I don’t think I would notice or pay attention to it. Especially not when I’m stuck in someone else’s body.

This is only the last of a huge list of plot holes, but I always think that it’s better to just enjoy this movie without thinking much, it’s enjoyable and that’s it

they were stuck in each other bodies for a long time. idk about you or for students in Japan, but I always had to date the papers I wrote or any assignments I turned in.

Ignore the "felt like a dreamy trance when body swapped" excuses and other cope about phones not having the year. Unless you are a delinquent, a hobo, or a baby the date and year will 100% be relevant to a normal functioning human being in everyday life.

Its just not a well written movie. Very pretty and emotionally engaging, but not well written.

probably because they had no idea they were in different times for the most of the movie and when they got to know, they had a lot more than that to do by which I mean save Mitsuha.

they talked using the calendar, and every calendar has the year, and they were going to school too, they never had to write down the year on some test?

I believe this was actually explained in the movie. Whenever they looked at the date they’re eyes just failed them with the power of magic, illusion, and hallucinations.
They were marking notes in their calendar’s for each other at first, and it was popping up in their own dates at first, but the notes adjusted to match the dates they actually typed it in at, or something like that anyways.

well it was already a big shock for them to swap bodies like this so the possibilities of them noticing the year was also low

Its explained well by grandma at the scene where Taki finally back become Mitsuha.
Its like a dream, most of the time you dont remember what youre dreaming about and lost as time pass by.
How is it difficult or even a plothole?
Even when i remember my dreams when wake up, the more i try to remember it the more i forget about it.
Over 30 years of my life, i only remember just a few of my dreams from thousands of nights dreaming.

Yeah may be something like that.
Because this memory erasing power activates when a person actively knows that the time is involved.

The issue isn’t seeing the year, it’s the fact that dates and days of the week don’t line up the same way within three years - i.e. the first Monday of January would be different for each time no matter the year, which would be easily picked up considering schedules are important to them.

As someone pointed out, it could just be the body-switching magic casting illusions that prevent them from realising, which in context is honestly believable.

Yeah I noticed at first at that one scene where both of them are marking the same date on the calendar, the corresponding days were different. But at that time I brushed it off as an animation mistake.

In their defense many say no one checks the year on a calendar(except in the beginning of January). When was the last time you did it?

But there is a counter, let's say one of them goes to sleep on Saturday, knowing the next day would be Sunday, he/she will wake up to a school day. Which should have bothered him/her.

Just because you found the movie to be boring, doesn’t mean everybody feels the same way. If you don’t care about the movie, you don’t need to post in the thread.

Same here. I have a dream log where I write my dreams as soon as I wake up, but I barely remember most of 'em. Only a few dreams stood out to me, and only those are the ones I can clearly and lucidly remember. 😩

I'd say they're too focused on their bodies being swapped to even care about the timelines. Or, plot convenience / plot hole could also explain why they couldn't care less about the timelines they're in.

By the end of it, they didn’t even remember each others’ names. Their memory was affected by the switching. The grandmother talked about it a little and how it’s all hazy because of the process.

Just a thing for the plot. Even if wasn't shown on a phone you'd find out at school or through conversations about things that had or had not happened.

Really, it probably should have been set in the 80s or early 90s? As then there wouldn't be so many ways to find out the date and there would be more isolation between the two (I mean just look each other up on Facebook?). However, I think they chose the ear they did so that they could better connect to their target audience.

It's just a plot device reality, I don't think you actually need to have two different time periods but by doing so you just have a better representation of the theme and idea behind the story.

There is not such a huge time gap between them so it looks pretty normal to me that they didn't notice.
