it started well,

the animation looks good, there is blood, and we still want to know more about the main character.

the ost is good.

I'm not a big fan of this artstyle, maybe because its something new to me. But I like the tone of this show. The subtitles were pretty delayed for me by few milliseconds, which was kinda annoying. The OP visuals and the ED song was amazing.

Episode 2 is locked as members only. I hope it unlocks next thursday.

-0.5 because Chinese sounds awful
-1 for the CGI parts
-1 for the Ufotable-esque art

7.5/10, better than reading the manga version that had awful pen-stroke art

Oddly enough I don't find the kid to be cringe-y or out of place here. I don't know how they managed to have this balance between (mature) violence and (childish) innocence but it somehow works for me. A miracle, I guess. Animation is a bit choppy if we're being brutally honest here. Overall, looking forward to what's next.

Less gooo! Been waiting for this one to release for a while now, I love the aesthetic a lot and the voice acting seems pretty great, specially given how much donghuas lack on that aspect, shows how much the industry is evolving. And goddamn, the op is stunningly gorgeous and the ending is a banger.

I waited this from back then in 2019 and what do I think of the first episode? I am a bit torn honestly. I was expecting the same quality as in the trailer...maybe I shouldn't had any expectations like that. A bit too early for any type of statement. I read the donghua and I know the story is good so I'm looking forward for the rest of the episodes! Baby Xiao Qi is just as adorable as I remember from the donghua :)

This is the first anime I have watched produced by Color Pencil Studios. The opening song has some of the best visuals I have seen in anime, this encourages me to watch the other anime produced by this studio.

The episode starts with a fight in which the MC completely demolishes a gang along with his young sidekick, Qi. The animation in the fight is choppy, while choppy animation is something you want to avoid during a slow scene that has very little action, this anime uses it to enhance the speed and impact of every attack, it also shows the limited space in which the fight takes place. The choreography also matches the animation style and shows us the full scope of the fight and how the MC easily defeats the amateurs.

The fight doesn't last very long and we move on to the opening song. The opening is not very long and therefore doesn't break the flow of the story going forward. The MC and Xiao Qi continue on their journey to make money, so that the MC can pay back what he owes to a man that goes by the name, of Mo. From this interaction, we can assume that the whole story or this part of the story will revolve around the pair chasing bounties to pay back Mo.

The most likable character is Qi, I like the fact that he behaves like a child and is not an overpowered character with a fake personality. It's not that I don't like that aspect in anime children, it's that the trope is overused and is losing its charm.

The next day the main pair stumble upon a battlefield, both sides have lost. On one side we have a tribe of cannibals who are called "Rakshasaas" and on the other side is a convoy from "Yumen Pass", later we find out that the convoy belonged to a young man in search of revenge from the man that killed his father. While they were on their way, the Rakshasass attacked, resulting in an all-out battle that ended in both sides having severe casualties.

While traveling through the blood-spilled battlefield the main pair see a man standing in the distance, Qi calls out to him but there is no answer. The MC then explains to Qi that the man is dead. He had died standing. This is a very honorable death and is very rarely seen in anime and manga, the only other person who I know had died in the same way is Whitebeard from One Piece. Scenes like this are the driving force for me to continue the show, I hope we see more events of this nature going forward.

In the next scene, Xiao Qi says that should collect any valuables they find from the dead men, but the MC, Dao Ma refuses saying that taking things from the dead can bring consequences. At the end of the battlefield, Dao Ma sees a sword struck at the leader of the Rakshasaas gang, he takes the sword and puts it in his bag, this action confuses Qi as only a few moments earlier Dao Ma said that they must not take the belongings of the dead, Qi questions him and Dao Ma answers by saying that it would be a waste to keep such a good sword only for it to be collected by a thief and only for a cheap price, he calls it borrowing from the owner.

Directly after this the main pair meet an old man and they decide to help him to get the bounty of a wanted man. With the bounty, Dao Ma can fully pay Mo what he owes and he could be at peace. This is the beginning of a journey to arrest the man and seize the bounty.

Overall this was a good episode, a strong beginning to a great story.

Zamn, this was real good man, they also got the goat directing the opening Hiromatsu Shuu who so far every opening or ending this fella has directed have been legit the best ones i've seen, the direction style of this Donghua is interesting, its like they are directing it as if it was a live action estern cinema. I really dig the setting too.

So far i like what i'm seeing, i wonder where the plot would go, like, is he going to go from target to target or does he have another objective in mind related to what caused him to have a debt in the first place.

OML that was kickass! The animation, the atmosphere, the story! Brilliant.

Best anime of the season and its not even anime. Goes to show how donghua is better than modern anime. Ufotable and mappa have way worse visuals than this.
