I've just finished episode 3 and so far it seems whoever did the subs took "some liberties". Episode one had a joke completely fail because they called shirako the wrong thing (fish maw...how does mixing eggs and fish bladder cause pregnancy?). Episode 3 they translated slip stream (has the same JP meaning as it does in EN) into some battle anime inspired trash name "High-Speed Storm"....ok, Naruto, sit down. All throughout I'm seeing things with obvious translations being botched...and I speak .01% Japanese and somehow I know this, how did the translator get their job? I will say, I am supremely enjoying the show, but jeez, do better, translators!

Idunno if it's the translator or the localizer that they "hire" to westernize it who usually are open about their butchering of subs on twitter and say "if you don't like it, these subs were not made for you". Garbage people that should not have this kind of job.

Trust me, you absolutely do not want to watch a show with literal sub translation you are not going to enjoy it. Translate the meaning, not the words. This is why they have the job and you don't.

You are half right. A word for word translation would be an even bigger mess, but you shoulda stopped there. I don't "have the job" because I wouldn't want it, plain and simple...but if I did I wouldn't screw it up like they did here, or with any number of shows recently that were butchered over someone's beliefs being more important than doing their job right (I'd localize without maiming the end product).....imagine, going to a restaurant and ordering a steak medium-rare but being given chicken breast because "the chef wanted to make chicken"......don't defend incompetence/stupidity.

100% agree. The messed up subs for this didn't seem malicious (besides the shirako issue and that may be because of fear of pissing off western Twitter freaks....can't have kids eating shirako, right?), but they were still bad, like someone had no clue what they were doing.

One show that has had terrible "official" subbing too is Urusei Yatsura, terrible, over exaggerated to hell and back and I see that you have it in your plan to watch list so I suggest looking up fansubs for that one. Onimai also suffered from trash subbing. Also great favorites! Umamusume, K-on, Kill la Kill, A Place Further Than The Universe, Yuru Camp and ofc Nagatoro. ;)

It seems we have those particular tastes in common! Also, I did like Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryokou but I found myself unable to score it...hence the no score lol.

It's sad to hear they did my girl Lum dirty. With how many shows that have gotten messed up, if I were a conspiracy guy I'd say the workers of the anime industry are mad at the higher ups and mass sabotaging shows out of spite. Like, how many shows got screwed up this past 2 seasons alone? Clean sweep the industry, keep the time tested workers, and the start fresh.

Yeah idunno either wtf they are doing at this point. Anime is bigger than ever in the west and they feel the need to pander when we watch this stuff because it's not the same as Western media smh. Having watched anime for so many years now and seeing subs that don't fit what they are actually saying (cuz i'm weeb enough to know a lot of common phrases) they over do it in such a way it makes the conversation sound unatural.

Where are you watching Nagatoro? There seem to be a few different sub releases around for each episode and some are better than others. The official Crunchy one seems to suffer from a lot of trendy colloquialisms, and you’re right that some of the jokes just get completely messed up.

In fairness there have been some jokes where I’ve been pleasantly surprised in how they managed to make it work (I can’t think of any from 2nd Attack right now, but season 1’s splinter pulling incident actually worked better than in the manga).

I think the last episode is the only one I’ve watched where the subs correctly have Gamo referring to Senpai as Paisen.

If they use Paisen when Gamo says Paisen then it's Crunchyroll subs. All the slang/trendy subs are also Crunchyroll subs. I gotta agree that CR subs have kinda ruined Urusei Yatsura cuz often the subs don't seem to match what's being said. Maybe once enough ppl complain about the subs being filled with slangs and unaccurate translations that CR will do something about it. Or perhaps we're doomed and the only way we'll get unruined animes will be to learn Japanese so we can understand everything that's being said without relying on unfaithful translators.

Waaaait....you do realize you just did the equivalent of poking a bee hive and wondering why you got stung?  "This is why they have the job and you don't" was clearly not an innocent, polite comment so why are you surprised I responded in kind?...but hey, whatev's, let's just agree to disagree and move along.

What subs are you actually complaining about? If you're talking about the first subs available on 9anime and such, it's your own fault.
If you reply back to me and I never respond, I lost interest and don't care. Sorry about that.

I was talking about Crunchyroll...but, as far as I'm aware, illegal streaming sites re-stream from Crunchyroll, Hidive, Funimation ect as soon as they put episodes up. Is this incorrect?

Admittedly, I'm not actually sure. I just know that whatever gets posted on 9anime is barely passable, dedicated subs are usually better.

I can confirm that's true, a lot of pirate websites just copypaste what sites like CR put up and then stream it like that.

I don't generally know what subs I'm watching, but from what I do know the CR subs feel more natural as a native English speaker.

Not sure what subs you're watching, but CR has it as, "the cod roe and soft roe..." as a translation for 「たらことしらこが。。。」 - soft roe being another term for milt.
Episode 3 has 「スリップストリーム」 as "slipstream."

https://ibb.co/LQWjqLc - in case the image doesn't post

So, seems like your arguments are pretty moot.

A point made in the past is not moot because of corrections made down the road. They were valid then which makes them still valid now, post changes. I'm glad to hear corrections were made.

Certain liberties with the subs were taken.

Yeah, no, you've misunderstood.  These were day 1 subs.  Again, not sure what subs or fansub group you're watching, since apparently you don't even know, but your issue is with a specific sub group and quite likely an unofficial one.

So, yes, your point is moot.

From what I saw those "liberties" weren't really liberties at all.

I know this is late, but by chance do you know where I can watch the Nagatoro fansubs? I can't find any no matter what I google, no matter which site i'm on. This entire topic of localizers cencoring and distorting content has had me pretty upset for the past few days, so some directions to the fansubs (or any fansubs for that matter) would be most appreciated.

Rom & Rem is the fansubs i used, you would have to torrent it tho since most if not all pirate sites take the subs from the official sources.

Thanks. Once I learn how to torrent, I can finally watch Nagatoro with no "gigachad" BS
