i've never once cried on stuff like clannad or 5 cetermeters per second or stuff like erased or  Angel Beats or Your Lie in April.
but for some reason, this series makes me pretty damn sad.

I was puzzled at first, its like it gives me a feeling of nostalgia for a time i've never lived in. Or like the sense that you wasted a huge amount of your life, or you did so many things in life that you regret and be stuck in a world where you have no one you have a connection with.

perhaps its the way that the uncle obscures his past with comedic moments, but I always felt like this type of anime or manga is really uncommon or underrated.

its like the idea that some one has been away from somewhere for a long time, only to come back to find out that everything around them has changed, and they no longer have anything in common with the world.

an example would be the japanese myth of Ryūgū-jō
basically Urashima Tarō  a fisherman is rewarded for rescuing a turtle, and carried on its back to the ancient underwater Dragon Palace (Ryūgū-jō) . There he meets  the princess Otohime and He spends what he believes to be several days with the princess, but when he returns to his home village, he discovers he has been gone for at least 100 years. When he opens the forbidden jewelled box given to him by Otohime on his departure, he turns into an old man.

i'm not sure if this story is inspired by the myth but it really does seem like a few similarities here,
the uncle literally just lost his childhood, and as a gamer myself i totally understand how he felt with his obsession with sega, and also as some one on the spectrum the fact that he had a horrible time in the other world, and his misinterpretation of others interactions really speak to me on a personal level. I just really hate how most of this overshadowed by the corny comedy at times, so the story really skips over what this dude has been through, imagine losing like many years of your life in an unknown world while constantly being tortured and attacked by people and unable to understand your companions.

i know this may seem like a rant, but I really just wanted to give an alternative take on this instead of the usual reddit version where its ether very badly written comedy, or some insanely funny next konosuba (which i originally thought)

I think it is pretty hilarious and relatable.  The humor hits pretty close to home in most of the jokes like the uncle beeing treated as ork for lacking looks.  I love the cast so I do not consider it sad.

For me the series gives me a feeling thats somewhere between sadness and disappointment. He doesn’t seem to progress much with the inter-charcter development for almost the entire series. He just keeps misunderstanding or memory wiping them.

And I empathise way more with the side characters than him, which might be a major factor of it…

The saddest part is the episodes getting delayed.
Second saddest part is the elf suffering in her world, unable to find the "orc-face" anywhere.

i didn't like how he relies on spirits but did not try to communicate with the god glob. was a bit disappointing maybe limitations of the mangaka? well. i enjoyed and kept going back to see more episodes so i think that's what a good series is made from.
i tried to read your post but.. short summary??

isnt the whole point of the anime about tragic jokes.

every joke in the entire anime is related to some kind of disappointment. from when they think he gonna get laid but disses her at the door.

to him telling an epic qoute and later on realizing he stole it from a video game.

to him expecting to meeting actual sonic but encounters a real hedgehog instead.

i can go on and on.

But yes everyone experience dissapointment and yes therefore its relatable in some shape or form.

the show was funny and great.

Interesting take, there are definitely some moments where I find it hard to laugh at the situation because of the underlying tragedy but I still think the show is pretty funny at times.

it does have a surprising amount of emotional depth especially sad seeing Elf have her heart broken repeatedly. But Uncle is much too emotionally retarded to comprehend any of it which is also very frustrating. Frustrating in a good way. I think people who have high empathy are the ones with whom this show would resonate the most.

What if this show shocked everyone and ended in a extremely sad way with Uncle suffering from alzheimer after wiping his own memory too many times?

Oh you knw the story will be sad, the small handbook of wiped memories is already the biggest red flag,

Hack, his presence here means something led to his return, leaving the girls behind

It's a half-hearted comedy, ecchi, fantasy. The only thing about it that wasn't half-hearted, was the relationship building between the characters.
I can't call it sad, because on one hand I consider myself old as well and uncle just doesn't affect me in an emotional way. On the other hand, when the guy himself, acts so nonchalant about his hellish Isekai experience, you kind of think "isn't half of everything bad that happened, kind of your own fault".

From what I've seen and read so far, Most people tend to gloss over the serious issues and situations brought up throughout this anime using the comedic label as their central focus and to not take it seriously. Which is perfectly understandable. However, Imho,I find this anime particularly depressing despite the humor because my gut tells me the way he reverse uno'd himself back home is genuinely tragic and heartbreaking. I think most people gloss over the vital hint of a major character's unknown fate at the end of the opening song. At the end of the song, a specific detail completely contrasts with the whole of the upbeat song and its comedic perspective. At the very end of the opening, His book of erased memories is splattered with blood droplets as the girl sings the words "dont forget",i believe that detail is extremely important to just not take notice. Ojisan has lived cruelly and horribly yet maintains his empathy and humanity. It's endearing yet depressing because he's suffered tremendously and erases his own memories to keep his sanity. His emotions are essentially locked away with those memories which is why he always comes off as cold or detached but in a funny and kind way. Honestly, I don't want to ignore his pain just to laugh at the funny parts. It's black comedy at best. Dark but funny but also sad if you wanna be lethargic and sentimental.

I didn't find it sad.
Yousuke lived in other World, he returned not empty-handed: he knows magic, he has memories. But yes, seeing how changed everything during 17 years, how relatives abandoned him except for Takafumi, can be hard. In over-all I think plus/minus = zero.

The only good thing Oji-san did in this show is helping his son to get a gf!!!

Heck he never developed as a character yet his son & his gf did!!!
