The official Twitter of Disney+ Japan announced an anime adaptation of Osamu Tezuka's Hi no Tori (1967) (Phoenix) manga on Wednesday, revealing the studio and a trailer. The anime, titled PHOENIX: EDEN17 and produced by Studio 4°C, is set to premiere in 2023 worldwide, exclusively on Disney+.

Tezuka originally began drawing the drama fantasy manga in July 1954 in Manga Shounen but did not finish due to the magazine's suspension in May 1955. Following it, a new story began serialization in Shoujo Club in May 1956, but it also was not completed and ended in December 1957. For the third and final time, Tezuka began writing a new story for the series in January 1967 in COM and ended incompletely in February 1988, before his death in February 1989.

Synopsis
From time immemorial to the age of space colonization, there is one legend that has stayed unchanged in every history book—the tale of the immortal bird Phoenix. A being whose blood is said to grant eternal life or wisdom, the radiant figure ensures the continuation of sentient life in the universe as it oversees human civilizations and their development.

Yet, mankind remains a slave to its habits; from happiness and sorrow, to wrath and love, a myriad of emotions continue to play an integral part of human life. Simultaneously, time and time again, certain beliefs and agendas persist over the centuries to disturb the fragile equilibrium of the world's preordained nature and principles. It appears that fate and its dynamic variables can manifest itself in many ways—and oftentimes exhibits a bizarre sense of humor... [Written by MAL Rewrite]

Great! Only sad that the manga wasn't finished due to Tezuka's death. I hope it will air with subs.

This is wild, it's a very family unfriendly arc being adapted, especially for Disney; plus the manga itself remained unfinished to this day for obvious reasons.

Oh look, the most holiest of the holy combinations, super obscure manga, ugly ass CGI, and foreign money.

Another 5.47/10 incoming.

Sucks that Tezuka was never able to finish it how he wanted to, but I hope that this anime will be good and give it a nice ending if it goes that far

Ironic that Disney seems to have funded this... Tezuka was inspired by Disney back in the day, and now it's going full circle.

@Lucifrost I know this is your favorite manga, thoughts?

Holy cow. I never once in a million years would've seen this coming even with how well received it looks to be. This is quite cool.

This is actually super cool, really can't wait for this to come out. Cool to see a Tezuka adaptation, the animation in the trailer looked really good as well, really personally like studio 4°C.

I'm excited! This may not be one of my favorite arcs, but it's an arc that has never before been adapted.

I knew this, but still when you wrote this it somehow made my day so thank you :)

Looks pretty (CGI of course but I'm pretending I don't see). It's been so many years and without ending, because he died before it. It's like a tribute to him, culmination of his hard work.
But being honest, I hate how Disney takes everything nowadays (and destroys many stuff too). Anyways, it's good news.

The trailer's music is so nice. I wonder who the composer is for this adaptation.

Studio 4°C is my favorite studio, so I'll probably check this out when it's released!
