Surprised no one created a discussion thread about it until now.

Anyway, I watched it in a cinema yesterday and it was a great time! It looked amazing on a big screen. I did have a couple of issues with the movie tho.

First of all: It did feel rushed in some places, especially before the rock opera part starts to kick in. For example, I felt a bit of a whiplash when they were talking about the spirits floating around them, and then suddenly, boom, rock opera begins and they are freakin good at it lol. Felt like I missed a few minutes at least.

Second: It's going to sound a bit silly for a rock opera, but the musical parts were a bit too long. Mostly because the music itself felt pretty one note at some moment, being long itself wouldn't be a problem but when you hear the same song for a while (especially when it's Tomona's parts, these were pretty much the same instrumentals he was singing on) it gets a bit tiring.

Outside of that tho, solid 8/10.

I went into watching this knowing something about rock music and that was it. I love the first part of the film and honestly would’ve probably preferred if this movie wasn’t about the power of storytelling through rock music, but then it wouldn’t have been another wacky Yuasa movie. Some parts definitely did drag on too long, but the animation was stellar and ties history of stories with music very well.

This was really good and I've been waiting to watch it for a while!

I like how it kinda sounds like Queen for a few moments here and there lmao. Going for the rock opera theme.

It's also very gender! Like both Inu-Oh and Tomoari go by a couple different names, and Tomoari is criticized for dressing like a female prostitute.

Also, I'm glad I watched the Heike Monogatari anime before I watched this. I have next to no knowledge of Japanese History (other than the "history of japan" video by bill wurtz). So this movie felt like a spiritual successor to Heike Monogatari.

I don't actually remember much about that anime in particular, but the things they mentioned in this movie - the 6-year-old emperor, the fight with the Genji(?), and the final battle at sea where everyone drowns - were also things mentioned in Heike Monogatari.

Heike Monogatari took place between 1180–1185, and Inu-Oh takes place in the 1300s.

I clicked on this without knowing what it is and regretted the moment I saw it was from Science Saru. Art it ugly, the close up of the guy's teeth with saliva was incredibly gross and ugly. Concept is stolen from Dororo. It was obviously guitars and drums being played for all those modern songs besides the biwa and taiko (or whatever those Japanese drums are called). Watching this is like torture, I had to stop in between, since I'm just 30 mins away from completing this nightmare I guess I'll torture my self some more but on another day.

Edit: Last part was good but overall still sucks.

Wow.
Watched it Today.

What!, A crazy movie it was!
The creativity was on another level.
The character designs were fantastic.
The voice acting was top class.
I am a hardcore fan of Avu-chan and he absolutely nailed it perfectly and fucked the voice and singing performance on universe level.

Tsuda-san, you are a damn god, liked his character.
But,
The best thing in the movie was animation and music.
Animation was full of so much creativity like the way Inu-oh moves, the animation of Biwa and Taiko drums were really amazing, the dance was so majestically animated, well choreographed, the still frames were so beautiful and I loved the significance of scene of fire, the way they animated it, it looked majestic but the best was last.

Loved the movie.
Story was mid.
This movie is for suckers of music.
But, trust me even if you not enjoy the story, you will loved the music and animation.
And, it will make you dance and stand up.

For me to go into this movie was, first of all,
Masaaki Yuasa and Avu-chan.
Then,
Science SARU and Tsuda-san.

You will fucking love it.
Definitely 9/10 for me.

Burial mound of arms made me want to leave the theater I was fidgeting halfway through the song. It was uphill from there

Left me all depressed after the credits rolled. Won't spoil anything, but that final performance was simply out of this world.

Probably my favorite anime from Yuasa so far. I didn't have a lot of expectations but after watching the movie I found t quite nice. I had my problems here and there, but overall it was an enjoyable movie.

I agree. The music and direction parts were incredible, but the scenes lasted for too long.

I'm glad I watch this in cinema. It's very bold and even making a suicide decision, like having two consecutive ten minutes musical sequences, something Disney's musical and Kubo and the Two Strings will never do.

Though I'm questioning whether Inu-Oh is based on true story or not. If he was erased from the history then how can we know for sure that he existed?

That was pretty good. I just decided to watch it today instead of sleeping. I think if I watched this in the cinema it would've been even better but my laptop is fine too. 7.5/10. Almost an 8 for me.

Good thing I watched Heike Monogatari prior to this. Unfathomably based film and soundtrack. Biwa the Rock just works.

Reminded me of my childhood days watching musicals with my Family, Jesus Christ Superstar, Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat, etc. Never experienced anything remotely close to that in anime, until tonight. Have never been the biggest fan of Science Saro, their projects or their unique art-style, but this one resonated with me.

Those very long sequences of song and dance were simply amazing and incredibly immersive, I even found myself moving along at times, especially to that Whale story.

Very swift pacing, time skips are fairly indifferent, not much room to breathe. But it keeps you hooked nevertheless. Not the most interesting story ever, but the way it was presented, is definitely worth the watch. 8/10.

The character I feel bad for is the damn blind guy who sacrifice himself to save Tomo, and in the end he just let himself be beheaded anyway. That guy died for nothing.

I did like the art direction, it was good, and the soundtrack was REALLY good.
The singers are really talented and the overall vibes of the songs were cool - even mixing "modern" rock with 1400s japanese music was a choice I would have not expected to like as much as I did.

The rest of the film was, for me, uninteresting, boring, kinda bad.
Despite really liking the songs, I think they were waaay too long for a film that's only 1 hour and 38 minutes long. Everytime a musical pieces came on, I enjoyed it for a bit, then I couldn't wait for it to end and the story to progress.
Sadly, the story didn't progress at all.
Too many questions were raised and little to none answer were given; there was just the basic plotline and nothing more.

Why or by who was the imperial sign cursed? What about the mask? And how did they find it? Why did his father had it? Why was Inu-Oh turnin into a normal human after getting restless souls into heaven? Why were the ghost of his ancestors following the protagonist, and why did they suddently disappeared?
Many of those have an historical/legendary answer, but it did not help that this film didn't make anything clear at all, since it was a fantasy tale and so the story could have been different- the film was also presented at the Venice Film Festival in 2021, so it was intended for a global public, so don't even think about saying stuff like "But it was for japanese people who knew Japan's history!!!1111!!".
It's like making a film about a 1900 A.D. explorer finding some roman ruins and not givin any hint about what is going on, just saying "Oh, but if you were from Europe, you would know!"

Also, I didn't find Inu-Oh actions meaningfull at all. The only person who accepted him for who he truly was was killed, and he didn't give a damn and continued to be the shogunate's dog. I don't really find films without a morale worth my time.

The opening act is unbelievable. The imagery, shading of colors and the rapid fast editing in that part is prime Yuasa, straight out of Tatami. Inu-ou's 1st and 2nd musical segments did drag which reminds me of Night is Short, Walk on Girl, where I remember it to have a musical performance in it's 3rd act, and I was bored there too. An exceptional movie otherwise and a great send off to Yuasa's Saru years.

Honestly, it was the first time I watched an anime movie that I knew nothing about it and I didn't feel bored for a single moment.

The moment the songs start to play is a big trip, and the songs are great.
Imagine how boring this world would be without Japan - a comment at youtube

Really feels like a stage play performance that can only be told through animation. Really enjoyed it. The ending is super depressing though, feels like we hit the highest of highs with that final performance and then the movie was like “but here’s a reality check before you go” . Really felt like an animated fictional biopic, like the queen movie. Good watch

The gritty, expressive animation, great music (the singers & musicians are crazy talented!), compelling storytelling, drama, humor & whimsy, the world building & character development... Every aspect of this anime checks an entire line of boxes for me.

I have sincerely enjoyed all kinds of anime for decades, but every now & then, one comes along that forces me to adjust my personal rating scale for damn near 98% of them. This anime is one of those. A Masterpiece.

really beautiful, very queer, i love how u can feel the energy and desire of the music even though you're watching a movie. i think they're in love but i'm also happy it was never portrayed as explicitly romantic or sexual bc that's the fun of it all

I could agree with the comments about some musical numbers being too long and the story being barebones, but... it almost feels petty when faced with the audacity and artistry of this movie. What an amazing performance.

So creative, strange, energetic, absorbing, uniquely beautiful, fun, disturbing and surprisingly sad. We need more unapologetic movies like this.

FYI: I think this goes well together with Heike Monogatari, also by Science SARU and released around the same time. Highly recommend the show if you liked this movie, even though that show is a lot quieter and plot/lore-heavy.
