This show just seems so confused with its setting. I get it’s not going for realism but to this extent it just becomes baffling.

It must be set in the modern world because modern technology exists like that wireless hoover and a computer.
However it can’t be set in the modern world because an orphan has just inherited a family estate and there is no social systems. Also the clothes worn are very old fashioned as well as furniture and the like being antiquated.
It must be set in the west, presumably England, by the design of the Manor House and other things.
They use cooking chopsticks and discuss Japanese food so it must be set in Asia.
However a full English breakfast with tea is shown later on again making you think of the west but specially England.
However even in that scene they use American bacon which you rarely find in England. Those small sausages you only ever see in bento’s and then Japanese soup but also white bread.
Also that brief scene with the tram at the end looked liked it was post WW2 Western Europe to me.

Obviously I know it’s just a jokey anime and not meant to be serious but with so many blatant contradictions it’s just kind of jarring and I can’t get a feel for the world they live in, let alone immerse myself in it. There’s enough for us to suspend our disbelief like the fact his situation could even exist, without the setting being so confused. I feel like a strong and established world is essential even in a relaxed and comedic show.

An example of what I mean is that Spy X Family is set in a fictional place but it seems to be fairly consistent with a post WW2 Europe vibe. So because you have some bearing on the world you don’t need an explanation, you can move on from it and focus on the characters and story.

Anyway I feel like any show with Rie Takahashi as a maid is more than worth watching.

TL;DR : Show isn't set in a perfect way/timeline and suddenly changing its atmosphere (England to Japan and vice-versa). Still he's going to watch cause of VA Rie Takahashi.

Bro just woke up and chose violence, although yeah, no need to take seriously, regarding the show or its setting, specially after 1 episode only. Just watch it for fun or drop it.

Arhitecture and tram style and color were very Austrian, so there's that.

My guess is it's just... somewhat romanticised perception of Europe in the first half of 20th century and computer was just in for the gag.
We know it's nonsense because we live here, but I guess that is what someone in Japan thinks of when "europe before ww2" comes to mind.

It is for Madoka alone." - Homura
