Yikes, a lot of drama and feelings outside of the battlefield this episode. I am kinda impressed at how they manage to capture the emotional drama from Shin's perspective after his latest missions.

I do like the scene at the sunset with the beach though. Seems to show a somewhat contrast compared to the despair this anime had for awhile now. Pretty much a buildup episode.

After 2 episodes focused on the setup for the morpho’s reveal and the initial fight against it, we get a more character focused episode as they continue to chase the morpho while taking breaks intermittently for repairs and shaking off the fatigue. It seems we’re also back into republic of san magnolia territories because we see a statue of the Saint Magnolia and the return of republic architecture.
This is the kind of episode where 86 shines a lot.
The visual symbolism was back in its full glory. It uses the environment to its full extent to convey the visual symbolism. This ranges from the distant shots of characters standing in different places to emphasize how distant shin is from the others, shots of the shadows, shots at anju’s back that impeccably place only a portion of theo’s face in the shot to make it look like Daiya’s face, the butterfly being ravaged by the ants, the 4 rocks, shots from certain angles emphasizing shin’s neck, and finally kiri’s bloodthirsty smile which is eerily reminiscent of a certain Nouzen cousin called Shinei. Man, I really missed 86 symbolism. The setup is great, and I’m hyped for next episode.

Once again, a lot of feelings were poured out in this episode as well. Especially Raiden, he really spoke up on how he feels about the situation at hand. It was quite an emotional episode IMO. But, once again I'm glad that everyone understands Shin well.

Like always, the conversation between Shin and Frederica was again touching and emotional. I feel bad for Shin in this show so many times. Quite a dramatic episode.

A calm before the storm episode, with plenty of emotional buildup and character introspection in preparation for the upcoming battle.
Man the symbolism throughout the episode was particularly amazing in this one... this was the type of episode that I actually appreciate them taking it slow in order to embrace all the amazing visual storytelling.

In spite of the slow pace there were plenty of interesting moments, but the last one between Shin and Frederica and the one at the beginning with Shin and Raiden were probably my faves. Shin really has it tough and it shows in all these "peaceful" moments out of battle, since he is always an outlier no matter with whoever or wherever he is. It is still far way for him to grasp that “something” that gives him purpose, but at least baby steps were taken in this episode, since he is self-aware to how damaged he is.

Can't wait for the upcoming episode, since it looks like we are up for a treat on xmas.

Things got heated between Raiden and Shin, but that was him saying that all as someone who knows him better than anyone, moreover always glad to see the understanding all of them have between each other.

Now things are neatly set up for an action heavy episode next time, though that creepy grin at the end.... too scary.

We're finally back with the weekly schedule of 86, and hopefully there's no more delays ever.

Frederica being on the battlefield is not a feasible solution, and so is Raiden and Shin's conversation that has gotten worse because the latter is starting to repeat his older brother Kiriya's actions to the dismay and chagrin of the former. Shin made it sound like an individual effort in this life and death situation, but Raiden once again reinforces on Ernst's promise that everyone comes back alive.

Out of the team that understood Shin's intentions, I'd say that other than the obvious Frederica, Anju pretty much hit on the spot, and others like Kurena and Theo only caught on at the pivotal moment. I love it when Frederica literally roasted Kurena into chiding her to take advantage of Shin's low moments as the "little sister" affection, and that Anju and Theo both took it in their own interpretation.

The more the battle wages against the Legion, the more the 86-ers and the Federation lose more resources and manpower at the frontlines. The symbolism of the dead butterfly being consumed by ants, that's a sign of a death flag there. As the 86-ers and Frederica spend their last relieve moments, such as the one along the beach side during sunset, every passing night becomes a night to remember, such as when Shin finally opens his heart to Frederica and conversed with her like a proper human being.

Frederica's pointers with Shin looking at the mirror references the 1st Cour with Shin seeing Kiriya's visions in the broken mirror, foreshadowing and retelling of the story that Frederica has long lived and survived to tell the younger brother about it, and shape the future his own way, together with Raiden and the others. The duality of Shin already foreshadowing of the others' deaths before his own as the Legion restarts with the Morpho, it's just really telling.

Kiriya's smile is just so scary and eerie to see, now as the Legion's Pale Rider.

Good news, there is an episode next week.

Bad news, apparently the last two episodes would be rescheduled. From what I've read, its because of scheduling conflicts, not production issues (they lost the time slot for the episodes due to the delays)

No news yet on when the last two episodes would air from what I've read.

My Dress-Up Darling has the same timeslot on Jan 9th in Japan as 86 did with Tokyo MX, and the finale episode would have overlapped with My Dress-Up Darling because of the 3 delays. And New Year's stuff was the previous week too. It was doomed to end up like this after that many delays, not a surprise whatsoever.

Yes, I also like this ep. It has tons of emotion and delicate details. Hope it won't be delayed again but for ep22-23 just never mind. I love to watch them anyway.

When the first production-related delay with Cour 2 happened, I pretty much knew that it would be hard to finish on time. And it's not like they can just change up channel timeslots now for the upcoming Winter 2022 season.
It doesn't help that New Year's Day is essentially a day off for EVERY anime, and even then they'd need a 1 hour special which is kinda hard to set up even without an official timeslot.
Yea we're still getting next week's episode, but gonna have to wait and hear for more news on when and how the final two will come out.

Worst case scenario is after My Dress-Up Darling is done during the transitional period between the end of Winter 2022 and before beginning of Spring 2022. Or if they can find a 1 hour free time-slot and build up well enough to it for an earlier release but I don't know. I know it shouldn't affect the whole quality of the cour but man, it's hard to give an ounce of a shit for the next episode now knowing the fate of the delay after it.

For the seasonal up-to-date anime watchers, yea this hurts. A LOT. Binging it afterwards won't affect it as much, but otherwise, the delays really did ruin the momentum. If there's a silver lining to be had, I remember that SugoiLite tends to leak a lot of stuff in general, including misinformation, so we're gonna have to wait for more official news to see how they plan to address this. I 100% doubt it's gonna end up like the trainwreck with WEP, though, cause I'm sure they've already finished animating the episodes or are at least just about to. Again, though, the complicated situations with timeslots doesn't help, and it's even more disrespectful to me considering that I really don't like Sono Bisque, personally lol

As far as the actual episode itself, it was a slow-burner but a better slow episode than some of the recent ones I've seen from this cour. This one had more focus on Shin's characterization and direction in life in particular when confronting Raiden and Frederica at the end, and even having the other 86 members and Frederica discuss it on the side while noticing his actions for quite some time. It feels a little overdone and not that nuanced to me but it still works for what the story's direction is with his character before the upcoming final few episodes. Production was pretty lackluster, some good background shots were there and nice imagery too for certain scenes like the Raiden-Shin one but generally, not up to par with the standards of the series for understandable reasons given the chaos happening behind the scenes. Motion felt lacking and choppy too, but at the same time, this was not an action-heavy episode so its fine. The animation needs to be prioritized for the upcoming episodes more than this one.

So overall, it was fine. Not an episode that blew me away and had some boring little bits but there were more positive elements to the writing than frustrating ones. For a guy that hasn't enjoyed many of 86's slow burner episodes recently, this was above the average benchmark set this cour and it was nice seeing some time spent with the other 86 members too barring Shin, and their reflections on him - Anju in particular despite being a minor one.

It's nowhere going to end up like WEP of course quality wise (doesn't help that the series was an original one too with a messy plot before the special), but that momentum is pretty much gone for me, and as a seasonal viewer, it can't be helped. The delay makes more sense than it being fake, unless A-1 and the producers can find miraculously a convenient timeslot to make up for the schedule conflict at the 9th there but it's unlikely. I'll wait till the official news too to make sure but at the same time, I was expecting this anyway somewhat.

Really good episode again, nice use of imagery as always, the scenery was so beautiful.
This episode was more focused on the struggle of the characters, as Shin is not really there with them, he has no real motivation to anything, and it shows by just how disconnected he was from the others.

Unfortunately the last two episodes will have to be rescheduled.
By this point I have decided to read the LNs and I'm already ahead on them, it's better than waiting for god knows how long for the finale.

Shin finally opening up to someone. We've seen him be his usual closed off self for a long time now. Raiden confronting Shin early in the episode was a powerful scene. Raiden just wanting some answers as to why Shin would so causally talk about going on a suicide mission. Along with why Shin was acting the way he did in that battle against the Morpho. Every since the eighty six left the Republic there's been something different about Shin. Theoto brought that up in this episode, he never would've done something that would be a one way mission. Not for himself or anyone he cared about. But leaving must've are Shin realize that he's not had the same dreams and ideals as everyone else. They all have goals and aspirations while Shin doesn't, so its better to just die with a purpose on the battlefield than be left behind by the people he cares about. Which is so incredibly sad to hear Shin say. But there's little time for somber conversations now as the Morpho is gearing up to stop the eighty six pursuit.

Hmm so the advanced weapon that the alliance invented was chaff huh. Given what happened last battle its no surprise that Raiden will be worried about Shinn. Now that Shinn has no clear goal in mind seems he's getting a bit lost. Frederica's intellect and direct nature sure can be a double edged sword huh. Anju's reaction to that though was terrifying. On the Federacy side its nice to see Grethe work so hard to get help to Shinn and the others as soon as possible. Still the status of Shinn's unit shows the importance of regular maintenance and resupply. Reaching the sea sure provided the team with some brief time to relax. The heart to heart between Frederica and Shinn during the night was nice though and did well to showcase the hidden fears that both had within them. Looks like their quarry will be switching from retreat to attack next ep. At the same time looks like opinion's of the 86 within the military are starting to change slowly.

Pretty good episode focusing on characterization a lot.Lot of symbolism in this episode like the ants eating the Butterfly.

The emotional state of the characters are portrayed a lot in this episode.Shin still haven't found permanent purpose in life, which I hope they will find soon.Frederica's words are pretty good too along with Raiden's.

Also they have reached Republic territories judging by the statue of San Magnolia and the signboards of the Republic that we see where they are in this episode. Can't wait for the final confrontation between the Spearhead Squadron and the Morpho.

4:29 to 6:43 is so well executed; the piano BGM and the angles. Notice that Shin starts on the left of the screen and moves right, indicating progression towards his goal. Shin's view of Raiden is subtly put out of focus (and vice-versa) when Raiden tells him that not wanting to die is enough. His eyes are looking at the tracks behind Raiden when told it's his own path to walk.

9:02 The broken signage pointing to Wald and San Magnolia is crushing the Republic's namesake flower.

9:53 oh no Frederica completely murdered Kurena with those words...

13:18 Keep an eye on the butterfly. The ants are on the corpse, and there's a match cut to Theo's Reginleif putting a pile driver into a Löwe. Zooming out through all the Reginleif units. They continue to consume it. Remember what species has blue wings; Morpho. Risen from the ruins of San Magnolia are six flowers.

15:26 So many different oceans they could visit. Snow Witch lives up to her name 😄. Notice who's standing apart from the rest...

16:50 All gone but the most important part... the head...the brain...

17:22 With Shin's starlit conversation with Frederica, we learn a little about his motives, replacing the goal of slaying Rei with Kiri etc. He claims he is a ghost with no will or want like the legion but he is human after all. He only knows this certainty; that his comrades will leave him behind. Even the person who was supposed to remember him—Lena.

22:34 This Morpho's detached head rolls away. The other "Morpho" spreads his wings...Kiriya's smile perfectly contrasts with Shin's smile from the end of episode 18.

Dude not everyone can have the same sort of patience. I can surely wait cause it's not like the quality actually suffers like with WEP, but it does hurt the momentum in terms of anticipation and hype. In the entertainment industry, weekly episodes are a given and norm due to supply & demand, so delays can often be disruptive regardless of whatever circumstances cause them.

Those last lines by Shinei really hurt. My man really taking things hard mentally ever since he put down his brother and ever since he went wild in episode 16. He really needs help. A new goal in life. I'm pretty sure it'll be Lena, but for now, not confirmed if she's alive or not. For now, nothing but pain.

86 Saturday is back and today we got a character driven episode focusing on Shin and his struggles and the others trying to understand him. Best boy Raiden tried his best to get through to Shin. It takes a lot of guts to confront The Reaper like that, but he had to do whatever it took to send the right message to him, even knowing that Shin doesn’t quite get it yet.

Anju, Kurena, Theo, and Frederica eavesdropping on their argument was funny. Poor Kurena, she did NOT deserve to get destroyed like that!

Back at the Federacy’s temporary HQ spot, we see supplies being imported in, with everybody getting ready to continue their mission. While their morals may not be golden, they really do want the 86 to come back alive, no matter what.

These conversations between Shin and Frederica never get old. Today’s conversation really brought out the parallels of Shin and Frederica. Frederica is scared of losing Kiri, because she knows that Kiri is her main goal. She believes that she’d be better off dead knowing that her being alive could start a war. I think Shin recognizes their similarity, which is why he opened up to her. Shin feels lonely and empty, thinking that his comrades will abandon him in the end, just like how everybody that died in the 86th sector and the Federacy abandoned him. His thoughts are a tough pill to swallow as a viewer.

Overall, this character and dialogue driven episode was a great buildup to the last 3 episodes of the cour. The production was as usual top tier, another amazing episode indeed.

The pursuit of the Morpho continues.

The episode starts on their pursuit with the Morpho. Then stop to rest a night. Raiden notices how Shin been doing this past episodes by being reckless and whatnot. So they have a serious convo about that said problem. Which prompt Raiden to be angry at Shin which was understandble because, he turning back to his old self. The voice acting of Raiden this episode is good.

The next part is Frederica starts to convo with Shin about the next objective after the war is over. Which resonated with Shin. And earlier the gang wanted to went to ocean to seen it. Overall great episode that focuses on Shin and others before the storm. For a dialogue heavy episode it feels fast for me. And its an emotional one too

Another build up episode, focusing on Shin again.. While both Raiden and Frederica having talks with him, when the former didn't really stop with just talking. Raiden's emotions were understandable.

Poor Kurena, those words from Frederica were harsh, really harsh. I love how Anju had to confront her about it that she said stuff that shouldn't have been said.

Action continues next week, thank god! No longer wait this time around.

Again, Frederica being shoehorned into the forefront of the story is nothing more than a distraction for me. Instead of fleshing out other characters and give them more insight and agency, they have to leave the juicy dialogue to the token loli. Sigh.

I know there are delays but its the world we live in now. This episode was stonking with feels and character story. By the time the end credits kicked in I was feeling I need more. Me and crunchy had a falling out so I cancelled my sub, but damn, this is probably the best show running this season!

2/5. Considering lowering my score from 8 to 7. The 2nd half of this season is a lot weaker - while I still liked the first half.

Similar to the last 2 episodes of season 1 here we have boring stuff. The talking is just not good in this anime. And especially after those long delays in productoin I want some action and plot progress.

I guess I won't continue to watch this anime - should they make another season.

An amazing episode as usual. It was really emotional to see Shin and Frederica talking about their mental stress and their feeling regarding their own existence. It really moved the plot/character of Shin forward.

I understand that you don't like it but part 1 was also pretty lacking in action as well? Not every series has to have action to be good.
