This is being overhated, and seems more like a setup for a followup

I just finished watching this special, and I really need to get some thoughts off of my chest. When I heard that the first half of this episode was a recap, I knew then that the abysmal score was most likely a result of overhating. The recap is something I had no problem with; it's been 3 months since the series ended, so most people will have forgotten some bits. For me, it was either a recap or a re-watch of the entire series. With that being said... yeah, this ending can still be viewed as disappointing - mostly because of the abrupt ending of Ai moving and drifting apart from her friends.

The rest of the criticisms I've seen - centering around the questions left unanswered - could all be very easily fixed. As a setup for a 2nd season or a sequel, this ending seemed fine aside from that abrupt shift. My problem moreso lies on IF there will be a 2nd season, or, more specifically, if one was at least PLANNED. Not being awarded a 2nd season and never even planning on one are entirely different things. If they won't get one because of the production issues, then I won't hold the anime accountable too much. That's just an unfortunate thing that happens sometimes. But if there aren't even plans for one... then yeah, that's a huge problem.

After my viewing finished, my guess was that there are plans because of: 1. Ai saying she's back 2. even the worst storytellers know not to leave this many things unanswered. But MAL and Aniilist both say this is the conclusion, so I don't really know what to believe... Here's hoping we get a resolution to this story; whether it's a 2nd season, a sequel movie, or a manga adaption. Unless/until there is confirmation in the future that no such followup is planned, this special is getting way too much hate.

Yes. I agree with you. I did think the recap was necessary. I think one of the other reasons it also got hated on a lot is due to when it was released with only the recap part out at first and people were mad about that and started rating it badly.
Also I really hope it gets a season two because the special did feel like it was setting it up for another season and left a lot unanswered

in terms of quality the special is at the level of the rest of the show, but this is the end of the anime, and is a horrible ending, so this is appropriately hated imo

Unless there is no season 2, this special episode is meaningless. Tbh I didn't enjoy it, but if there is another season, I will be looking forward to it. I'm just hoping for season 2 without any problem.

Also curious to know how they will deal with the cliffhangers

I think that's a big part of why people hated it, especially for me. I expected it to rap up the story but all it did was set up a sequel that may or may not happen. I think most people wanted answers and a conclusion and this provided none of that

I think that the ending dont deserve all this hate, the spécial épisode wasnt the best, but its acceptable, why people are complaining saying "the questions left unanswered"? Its true but its the point, its an open end, you Can Imagine whats gonna happend ur self, thats why i liké it, a Season 2 will be so pointless. (This IS only my openion, and sorry for my Bad english)

Well the dismal BD sales don't inspire hope for a follow up. Unless you know of another source that supports WEP being commercially successful on any level I doubt there will be a continuation.
