Not going to lie, I almost immediately regretted my spur of the moment choice to watch this movie when the Halloween Party song started up. To be honest, a lot of the early movie was kind of hard to sit through. The opening sequence before Halloween is good, but the following stuff after that which plays out like an endless sequence of unfunny shenanigan's is pretty mind-numbing. After the escape thanks to Scoop the movie got a lot more enjoyable. Albeit, Scoop's introduction scene was perhaps the most painful of the film, I really did not like his character. He got one chuckle out of me when Lubicchi was like "that's not an exit that's a wall" and he was just like "just blow it up", but otherwise I found his gag of excessively talking to be rather annoying.
The movie has it's other problems following the getting good bit. I'm not entirely sure how I feel about all the musical montages inserted throughout, the other songs were usually good, but I don't feel most have were necessary. I think the movie, especially towards the end, had a tendency to harp on the same points too much to the detriment of their effectiveness. I guess that's to be expected from a Children's movie, but it did hurt the climax of the movie which I otherwise would've felt pretty strongly about. And there are some things that never get proper resolution that sort of bother me. I would've liked seeing Mr. Dan after his near death experience, and I especially would've liked to see some proper conclusion to Suu's betrayal. We see briefly that he was defeated by those bats/flying-squirrel things but it's pretty underwhelming that his betrayal is never discovered by anyone he betrayed, and that his resolution is just a brief gag.
The movie occasionally looks pretty ugly too but to be fair they definitely delivered where it counts. The reveal of the stars looked absolutely gorgeous, they knew what the money shot was and delivered on that. And I love the character design of Poupelle, the movie for the most part does look pretty good. Antonio's role was also cliché in the worst ways, albeit a lot of this movie is pretty cliché but I don't heralded it as big mistake. Lubicchi & Poupelle/Bruno's relationship isn't exactly unique in any way, but most of it is well-executed and effective, especially when Poupelle does remember and catches Lubicchi at the end. I found myself really liking there relationship.
Chimney Town as a setting was pretty good too, and I found the origins surprisingly interesting. Don't think they needed to repeat that opening monologue describing Chimney Town as much as they did though, one of the things they harped on too much near the end. I'll also say, I'm surprised they didn't harp on the negative effects of the pollution too much, health-wise anyway. There's only one brief scene where Lubicchi claims his mother's illness is due to all the Chimney smoke. Just weird that it wasn't presented as another driving motivator compared to just seeing the stars.
A bit mixed on what score to give it. For a good chunk I enjoyed this movie a 7, it's a fun story that hits most of the beats properly, but the beginning of the movie is pretty rough, and the end bumbles it a bit by repeating itself too much, so I think I'll give it a 6/10. |
