Cestvs and Ruska are standing toe-to-toe together, not just as Roman gladiators, but new-found friends. But to face a Sudden Death style of duel in the face of especially the Empress Dowager, none can defy her words, not even Cestvs's master Zafar. The outburst from Lucius "Puppet Emperor Nero" Domitius is truly worrisome though.

-------BIG TIMESKIP--------

The training of the slaves from Master Zafar in Pompeii will prove vital to their fighting style (whuch coincidentally means their survival), and he got lucky to see Sabina, she's a real beauty. The treasure trove of a lady who hates violence, and using fighting slaves to solve her problem, even if it's mere thugs.

I still feel that the CG's fine, though they could've handed the CG to Polygon Pictures or Larx Entertainment for Levius and Kengan Ashura respectively, who did the CG job better.

The pacing...YIKES, skipping from the beginning all the way to the "prologue", I'm speechless. For anyone asking, this is continuing to Chapter 8, then skipping to Chapter 90 for about 10 volumes worth of content.

The anime practically skipped almost 4 volumes worth of content which included characterization for Ruska.

I'm willing to forgive all those bad production, but cutting naked auction scene into just two picture is unforgivable. Naked auction scene is what define Cestvs.

They cut a whole section of the beginning, they accelerated a lot, they could do one or two more episodes, instead they just gave a rough summary.

The saddest part is that I was looking forward to the plot between Cestvs, Ruska and the daughter of Julianus Valens especially since it would shape the behavior of the Golden Lion son forevermore with the Germanic Guard.

They skipped the best arc
I don't know why they want action without building for characters

Nah this ain’t it man.

Random time skip, disgraceful cgi and terrible pacing.

I never expected this to be a good or even average anime but episode 1 led me to believe that this could be at least above average. Completely disappointing episode.

The anime literally jump from episode 1 being the chapter1 to chapter 90 of the manga like holy shit

go read the manga it's so worth it to binge and the art is amazing you can binge the whole series from part 1 to part 2.

To all the anime only watchers go read the manga it's so good and they literally skipped every good arcs and jump from chp.1 to chp.90. The art of the manga is so good it is a must read.

the production actually used 3D in several fights in the episode, which I kind of think is boring, but it was a good episode with a lot of interesting dialogue.

I hope that Cestvs Get stronger throughout the Fights.

Couldn't find the reddit post for this episode so I thought I'd post my thoughts here. I thought this weeks episode wasn’t too bad. Nero feels a little too nice and innocent for my liking. I Liked Poppaea though- she should be interesting. However there a few odd things
• The Praetorian Guards uniforms were white historically, not red.
• Ruska in the English sub calls his father a “dictator”- today that would be negative but in ancient Rome it would not. For the Romans, the greatest political taboo would be to call someone a King. A Dictator was instead (at least originally) an official who would have complete control over the Roman Republic for a period of 6 months during a crisis. I did not have any negative connotation- that’s a modern thing. Ruska would not have said Dictator with such a negative connotation.
• “Lord Fabrice” sounds like total nonsense. Firstly I’m fabrice is not a Roman name, it should be fabricus and I’m not sure about Roman “Lords” yet. It may be that Lord is used in place of the Roman term “Dominus” but it still feels a bit odd to hear a Roman called Lord. I feel that the term Lord has too many feudal connotations to be used in a Roman context. Use the latin term instead.
• Yet more innacurate names- Ruddock and Emden seriously??? Isn’t Emden a city in modern day Germany. Roxanne (the music lady) is okay- Alexander the Great had a wife from the East called Roxanne so that’s plausible.
• That scene with Emden is odd. While it does establish him as a bit of an Arse, I feel that there would have been some come back from Emden nearly kicking a child out the way. Especially if the child was free or a Roman Citizen.
• Poppaea Sabbina is a real person in history however since it seems she’ll play an important role in the series I won’t say too much about what will happen in the future. I will however say she should already be married by this point (at least twice I think- the Romans were not too fussy about divorce).
• Also worth noting that Gladiators were ancient Rome’s equivalent of celebrities. There are even stories about wealthy Roman women being able to pay to have sex with gladiators (although admitedly, I don’t know if its entirely true) so Emden is not entirely out of a chance with Poppaea.
• Nero is way too nice. To be honest his “My mother is pushing me to be Emperor” thing seems more appropriate for Tiberius than Nero. Nero never struck me as the “No to Arena fights” type of person. Ditto for Poppaea. That feels a bit forced to me- more the product of a modern rather than Roman morality. That being said, the Romans would eventually ban Gladiator combat- but during the reign of the Emperor Honorius in the 5th Century AD. Nero lived in the mid 1st.

Well damn they really just threw a sudden timeskip in there, it's a shame to hear that the pacing is bad. Also can they decide if they want this to be a 2D or 3D anime lol.

People on MAL refuse to actually enjoy watching anime.

Your taste in anime isn't a personality trait.

MAL is literally just anime Twitter as its own website lol.

I don't have that much problem about the animation, it's okay. My problems are just a lot of inaccuracies, cliches, lame plot devices and it's damn rushed. They should just use one kind of animation weather it is 2d or 3d, it's weird that the animation keeps on switching

wow, this anime went from "decent" to "trash" really fast. This episode was a mess, the CGI looks terrible, and they cut a lot of story from the original source

Horrible pacing. I liked the first episode - though it felt like they already skipped stuff there. (How Cestvs got enslaved and other background info. I thought we'd get this later as a flashback but now I do not think they will show anything about that.)

Here they just said the first guy (owner of Cestvs) with hit school happened to have problems and then Cestvs suddenly was with another guy. Felt rushed. I didn't think it would be like this in the manga - and above posts confirm this: Someone said they skipped about 4 volumes.

Maybe they want to fully adapt this in 1-cour lol? :D Giving this 1 more episode. Though I actually should drop it already now. There probably will be more skips later.

Mixing 3D with 2D looks weird and the 3D is fucking ugly

I do like how they portray Agrippina. If I remember right. Agrippina was a psychopath known for her violent outbursts and cruelty

Haven't read the manga, so the pacing didn't bother me at all. I don't mind the 3d scenes either. It's an odd choice to jump back and forth between them but the 3d parts let the characters' bodies move around in a livelier manner than 2d can. You kind of get a good feel of the character's personalities with how they move around.

I'm really liking this show so far.

The animation, the static scenes, the pacing, everything is pretty terrible. Lots of historical inaccuracies.

But it's still an enjoyable anime, mostly because I find the subject matter interesting (also because it's weirdly fun watching Roman-era slaves acting like Japanese people.)

...but then again, I unironically like Warau Salesman.

Everything just feels so "off." It's hard to describe specifically but to put it shortly, I don't like it. Due to animation + pacing and all that in the two episodes thus far, it doesn't seem like there will be major improvement either.

The cg is ridiculous for sure, but the story is pretty good so far. I've read only 3 chapters and never touched again. Maybe I'll switch to the manga if this thing is only 12 eps or so

Unexpected timeskip there after Cestvs fight with Ruska, seems like they sadly skipped some volumes from the manga there. Knowing a little bit about Roman history and seeing how somewhat kindhearted Poppaea is here makes me already sad for her future.
