Eeeeee!! I honestly had no idea this even existed, especially since I've read the book this is based on! Then again, Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm has never gotten a decent adaptation that really did it justice. I can't believe I'm only learning of this short's existence today! I downloaded it and watched it, and...I love it!! Not only is it true to the spirit of the book, I like that instead of trying to adapt the entire book, the staff behind the short decided to just adapt two chapters of it. Even though it's been a number of years since I've read the book, I was easily able to recognize which parts of it the short film adapted, and I think it did really well in not only keeping true to the spirit of the book (and the chapters in question), but making sure not to bite off more than it can chew, allowing the characterization and animation to really shine through. I could watch a whole series based on this if I could, considering how much I love the World Masterpiece Theater, and this was just oozing with WMT charm! It helped that the storytelling made sense, making the overall moral not come across as condescending or patronizing. It's such a shame the WMT shut down in 2009 because of the changing anime landscape (with the industry preferring ecchi, isekai, or mobage adaptations), but shorts like this prove that there's still hope for it yet!
More than that, it's so great that Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm actually received a faithful adaptation for once. |
