The 24th and final episode of Dr. Stone ended with an announcement on Friday that a second season for the anime series is in production. The new season will continue the story of the Stone Wars saga.

Synopsis
After five years of harboring unspoken feelings, high-schooler Taiju Ooki is finally ready to confess his love to Yuzuriha Ogawa. Just when Taiju begins his confession however, a blinding green light strikes the Earth and petrifies mankind around the world—turning every single human into stone.

Several millennia later, Taiju awakens to find the modern world completely nonexistent, as nature has flourished in the years humanity stood still. Among a stone world of statues, Taiju encounters one other living human: his science-loving friend Senkuu, who has been active for a few months. Taiju learns that Senkuu has developed a grand scheme—to launch the complete revival of civilization with science. Taiju's brawn and Senkuu's brains combine to forge a formidable partnership, and they soon uncover a method to revive those petrified.

However, Senkuu's master plan is threatened when his ideologies are challenged by those who awaken. All the while, the reason for mankind's petrification remains unknown. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

Dr. Stone adapts Riichiro Inagaki and Boichi's post-apocalyptic adventure sci-fi manga, which has been serialized in Weekly Shounen Jump since March 2017. Shueisha published the 13th volume on November 1.

The 24-episode television anime produced by TMS Entertainment premiered on July 5. Crunchyroll simulcast the series with subtitles, while Funimation streamed an English dub. Adult Swim's Toonami programming block began airing the show on August 24.

VIZ Media published the first three chapters of the manga in English simultaneously with the Japanese release as a part of its Jump Start initiative and subsequently began serializing it in their now-discontinued digital Weekly Shonen Jump magazine. The company currently simulpubs the manga digitally with the Japanese release through its new Shounen Jump platform. The eighth volume was released on November 5, with the ninth volume scheduled for a January 7, 2020 release.

Dr. Stone ranked among the top 20 manga in the male readers' category in the 2018 and 2020 editions of Kono Manga ga Sugoi! rankings.

nice news, this is another proof that disc sales and source material like manga sales boost are no longer relevant but legal streaming profit is the new big factor for an anime sequel lol i heard this is big anime in China the alleged largest anime market now a days

Dr Stone got bad disc and manga sales or did not have sales boost

No surprise here. TMS is recently a powerhouse. They produce a lot of quality content.
This sequel was expectable.

Perfect, as again I love all these studios/directions which announce a sequel for a show that just ends or before it does !

Very well-deserved! I was worried for a while that Season 2 wouldn't be coming due to the astonishingly low BD/DVD Sales but I'm really glad the streaming revenues have green-lit a continuation, or at least that's what I reckon.

As a big fan of tech (robotic mainly, albeit), it was a blast to watch some of the basic creations that led up to this current civilized and highly tech world with Senku-sensei's guidance. I'd been taken all this tech for granted all my life such as light bulbs and more, this is one of the prime lessons that this show taught me. And y'know how they say, you need to cover the basics first, I feel like a grand part of that has been accomplished thanks to this show lol.

Definitely one of my favourite shows of the year! Hataraku Saibou from last year and Dr. Stone from this year, hopefully we'll get such an intriguing kind of scientific show for next year and beyond too. I've come to the realisation that anime teaches me far more than high school xD.

Awesome little teaser/announcement video too! I'm looking forward to what's in store for us next.

A question for manga readers: How many episode will the Stone Wars arc alone need? I have a feeling one cour is adequate, with no bases to support that whatsoever however, and hence Season 2 one cour as well. What do y'all think?

Stone Wars arc might last like less than 8 episodes only lol and there is enough manga chapters to animate another 24 episodes anime anyway so i bet they will do that

Right, that's interesting.

Something tells me they'll be making a short one cour, say ≤ 10 episodes, then since "Stone Wars" is part of the title.

Well, I hope they'll ultimately take that 24-episode route nonetheless. Is there a good stopping point for a full-fledged cour (11-13 episodes) after the Stone War arc though?

yep the end of the Stone Wars arc is a good stopping point welp ye they can stretch it out to 12 episodes if they want but that will be so boring though since the pacing will be too slow like your typical long running anime like One Piece episodes

Geh, I'd hate that too. Hopefully, they'll reveal some more info in the Jump Festa 2020 event so that we can narrow down with the speculations.

That's awesome! :D

By the way, a question for manga readers: how many episodes will this Season have, in your opinion?

I think it might have 12-13 eps. They should be enough to wrap everything and end this arc without any cliffhangers or finishing the whole season in the middle of another arc.

This isn't surprising, this seems to be the norm now for WSJ adaptations.
People on MAL refuse to actually enjoy watching anime.

Your taste in anime isn't a personality trait.

MAL is literally just anime Twitter as its own website lol.

Not really surprising, considering there's another 70+ chapters they can adapt. (first season adapted the first 60 chapters.)
