THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
It's a pity they removed scenes giving characterization to the memebrs of the Mugai-Ryuu, since that way, Shinrinji's death would had felt as sad as it was in the source. At least Giichi looked quite badass.
Poor Hyakurin too, with that sad past, then beaten, tortured and raped by those Itto-Ryuu members just after seeing Shinrinji die.

I had a good laugh with this beginning.
How can we cut this many chapters and still makes sense for these characters to band together? Just make then meet randomly at the streets! It's a big little city after all.

This episode was not bad but also not "good". It was just something that they couldn't skip. They left out as much as they could, left in as little as they could. And because all had to be rushed, even if the events played clearly there was little tension and flair. Yes, "little tension" in this episode (compared with the previous one) where the main event was a long torture. We see what happened, but we didn't felt what happened. Because the anime didn't showed the worst of it and because we had seen little of Hyakurin talking and interacting with Shinjiri (and others).
Can't be help.

But some scenes could be a bit better, like when Hyakurin laughs when is asked about "Akagi", the transition for the flashbacks, and that idiotic and annoying "special defect" that they're using. Why the hell the blood need to blink?
And one detail that I had already noticed in earlier episodes and is inexcusable even with budget and man-work constraints is the super closed framing. There are times when you need to pan out a bit and show more of the bodies. For example, in this scene you can't see what Sorin is doing (getting something from inside Magatsu's clothes).

Anyway, I didn't expected to see some bits of Rin in this episode.
I was expecting for "something" in the end, didn't happened.

Did you miss what Hyakurin told Manji?
They never trusted Shinri, but they also never had a choice.

I thought that we'll continue with Part 2 of the Gathering arc, with Manji finding Rin, but instead were given the Beasts arc where we see Hyakurin, Shinriji and Giichi, their Mugai-Ryu group.

Iffy storytelling does not do this episode ANY good as content skipping is erratic as flocks. From Manji trying to find Rin, meeting up Taito in the streets within from some stopped brawl, then switching over to Hyakurin and Shinriji tackling the marriage proposal side of the samurai.

And finding someone related to Anotsu Kagehisa is like finding a needle in a haystack, at least for Manji. Even within the Itto-Ryu, extermination through torture is the only way they could get any information. About "Akagi", Hyakurin and Shinriji just can't elude this information out.

And it seems that this episode really ups the ante on the torture and shock factor, which has it going for it, alright, but with basically not as much effort as it is for sentimentalism.

Didn't think that this series would try to be linear, but as iffy as it is, at least it is structured somehow.

Episode 10 was a prime example of what should be the main challenge of this adaptation going forward: the main beats of the plot will probably all be there for the most part, but with so many lengthy dialogue scenes cut or condensed, our interest in and attachment to the characters may not be as deep as it ought to be for us to be truly moved by tragic events like these. Don’t get me wrong, I still felt it was a powerful episode, but in the manga, by this point in the story, Hyakurin and Shinriji had already had like ten times more screentime (trust me, that’s not a hyperbole), so obviously it was more hard-hitting there.

Some changes in this episode also reinforced that the M.O. of this adaptation seems to be to preserve as much of Rin’s story as possible by sacrificing as much of Manji’s as they can afford to. A decision and priority I suppose I can’t fault them for, since Rin’s journey is both more important and more interesting. But it was still a bit jarring to see how simplified Manji's encounter with Sori (that’s the painter from episode 2) and Magatsu was here, with them just randomly bumping into each other on the streets.

Also, there was one change there which didn't make much sense, namely having Sori go out of his way to show Manji the piece of paper with Shira’s kimono pattern. As Magatsu says later, he sensed Sori knew something but wouldn’t tell him, and that’s because Sori knows Shira is the one Magatsu is looking for and knows how dangerous Shira is, so he wants Magatsu to stay away from him. But obviously the chances of that happening are rather slim now that Manji's decided to help him in his quest for revenge (he's been doing that a lot lately).

Anyway, I was impressed with the quality of the art in this episode, especially during Shinriji's brief skirmish with the Itto-ryuu members. Given the show's sparse animation, I probably shouldn't expect too much, but it gives me a little hope for the action in the next episode, whose official preview has shown it will cover my favorite fight in the series.

It looks like Shirinji is having 2nd thought of being an avenger, man he should have just told the Hyaku that they just walk away and get merried. It looks like they're plan to get rid of those itto ryn is going nowhere.

I feel bad for Hyaku, after getting caught now she faces hell that a woman dreads.

Fortunately, she was saved by her last colleague, and now we see her back story, very pitiful, and mother whose son was maltreated by her own husband and then killed cu'z he can to 100 swing with a heavy boken.

He wasn't an "avenger", and they can't simply "walk away".

lmao the snowflakes at ANN are having a field day with this, bad episode because it has titillating R A P E. Can't even comment there, it gets deleted asap

Nevermind that the raping is implied not shown, tragic not erotic. I guess men being gruesomely killed is a-ok but women being victims is a big no-no, even though it's the logical thing in any semi-realistic adult historical setting.

This show has such good direction and story telling...my god
The art and scene direction is just so spot on.....if they didnt rush this so that the pacing wouldn't be too fucking fast to comprehend, this show would have been a masterpiece.....

Shinrinji did way better than I expected, he even left a sign after his death... certainly that is impressive. Tortures, rape, and murder once more, and certainly, it was a painful sight. But hey, the episode was great!

Quite the tragedy for the Mugai-Ryuu members Shinjiru fought to the bitter end even left a sign, good thing Giichi could take some revenge with his unique killing style

I wish they gave them a bit more screentime earlier on, in order for us as viewers to bond a bit with them,

I'm on my second watch so I might be confusing things, but didn't Makie have a similar scene to how Hyakurin killed the guy who was guarding her? That circular blood spray seems familiar.

I’m literally so sick of this right now. Every new episode, is a new rape, or gored prostitute. It’s not even offensive at this point, it’s just fucking repetitive and lazy.
- The blonde girl has a horrible past… geez
- Damn, the glasses guy seems like the only consistently good fighter in this show
