Lol Kyo and those cats. Funny.

Kyo's personality really showed a lot again this episode especially when he's with Yuki. I find their character dialogue bickering to be quite amusing. Seeing Yuki talk to Tohri in his rat form shows more of his character vulnerability. It seems show connects these characters together through trying to understand each other.

They continue to show brief flashbacks of Torhu's mother, which is a fairly important part of the story.

So ... with this math, does the dragon dude attract dragons ? xD. Anyway, that was the first time i saw a rat to be depressed like that lmao.

Also about Tohru's mother, is there some mini arc in the manga just about her ? I would really like to see that, she seems like a great woman.

Interesting... I wonder how the episodes are ordered compared to the original manga and the old anime.

Anything about the school festival and Momiji in the manga happens way after when Kagura shows up. Its supposed to happen after Tohru's friends sleep over the Sohma house. I still have 100% of faith in this reboot but I am just curious on how much it will change things up, even if its minor.

I just hope they dont skip any of my favorite chapters haha!

"It's dangerous to think while you walk"

~Tohru

Such a wholesome episode again. It was nice to see that Tohru put the conveyed thoughts of her mother into practive. Particularly, the part where she encouraged Souma was really heartwarming. His smile, tho :3

And I loved the deutsch xD

It's fun and wholesome as always~
Two important charas appeared!

The order of the events is a bit different, huh
Just hope they don't skip anything or make the story flow weird
Next episode is gonna be so fun
Kagura looks so cute and shy xD

I think they do a mini arc explaining her mom's love life/ how her life used to be
Well, I'm not really sure, but don't worry they mention her a lot

I really like that "plum at your back" analogy by Tohru... we can indeed only see the back of others and not our own's that's why we do not realize our own "plums"...

Once again, the 2001 adaptation comes ahead of the remake.

The umeboshi scene resonates way stronger in the old Fruits Basket, because even though the people Tohru is talking about are still represented by onigiri, each one has a face with different expressions, something the remake show with a shot of different people looked at them from the back.

The old one also talked about cultural differences by showing different shapes and colors of the umeboshi. The sad Onigiri thinking "I'm only white rice" depicts people with low self steem who can't see their value because their umeboshi it's in their backs, something that doesn't get across with such a vibrant neon colored Onigiri in the remake, that it's too distracting and misses to express the message to value yourself. Also the music in the old adaptation it's quite poignant when it comes to express the human flaws that need mending.

I don't think, there's enough credit given to this episode than it deserves.

Both of the guys are jealous of each other and don't realize the amazing qualities that they both possess.

Seeing them both beat themselves up over it is just really sad to me but now there's Tohru in their life.

Her enthusiastic nature, how optimistic she is about everything, her character just shines so brilliantly, it's a great sight. She helps both of them <3

It's probably the first time i've actually shed tears because of someone's overly positive nature and how one presents an opinion. That pickled plum picture she painted for herself is just amazing. Loved the visual presentation of it as well.

That's a 10/10 episode in my eyes.

So we have the classic wanting what the other has thing going on. Last ep we got to know a bit more about Kyou and this time we've dived into Yuki. No real idea how this story is gonna go but for sure their relationship will improve.

The foreigner was a pretty good meme so I'm looking forward to her showing up at the festival.

The plum analogy started off pretty weird but it actually game around very nicely in the end. I liked that a lot.

Her analogy between a person and rice ball makes sense. We see other people's good points easily that we get jealous. But it also works the other way around. It's easier to point out other people's flaws coz we can't see ours. One thing is for sure, no one is a plain rice ball.

Tohru is such a baka. She's kind and all, but her naivety is a bit too much. I hope she'll get some growth as a character but seems unlikely as it's probably her cuteness that will change everyone around her while she stays the same.

Momiji and Kagura only make a brief appearance in this episode, but it's still nice to see them anyways. Momiji's German could use a bit of work, though...

Tohru's plum analogy sounds a bit weird at first, but it does make a lot of sense. It's too easy to see one person's good points and get jealous of them for it, but they don't realise that the other person would be jealous of the other person's good points as well, so a rift between the two would be inevitable.

Also, it's too easy to criticise one person's weaknesses without realising our own. A simple analogy can be pretty deep when you really think about it hard enough. =)

This episode was still great overall. The production team did a nice job with how they adapted the scenes, even with the odd change here and there, but the flow of it still worked nicely. =3

A bit dialogue heavy to be honest. I'd like it more if they showed more and talked less about how they felt. Let the viewer find things out by themselves so to speak.

LOL, the"Dragon" in Japanese Mythology can be represented by another animal, so you'll laugh when you see it^.^

Yes, there's a mini arc in the manga about Tohru's mother and their past. AND ofc, Tohru's dad:D She was an amazing character:D

There are rats around Yuki, but since rats are animals who like to hide in holes in the dark, they don't go out much. But remember episode one when Yuki's eyes glowed in the dark and there were rats on the background? Yuki basically called them so they could help him to retrieve Tohru's personal items (and her mom's photo):D

Another great episode! 'Kyon-Kyon' is one cute nickname, but somehow Tooru's simple 'Kyou-kun' feels even more endearing. So, Kyou is jealous of Yuki because he is good at everything he does, and is liked and acknowledged by the people around him. While Yuki is jealous of Kyou because, despite his initial reservations, he is an outgoing, kind guy who draws others to him.

And of course there's the whole thing with being part of the Souma, which just complicate things further between them. But both Kyou and Yuki are already opening themselves up to Tooru, and she was able to touch them with her kindness. Guided by her mother's words, she is really becoming a kind person who believes in others. And this, in turn, is helping these boys with their issues. There was also the onigiri analogy too, I remember the first time I heard it in the first adaptation. It really touched me, and it moved me again. It's a really great way of looking at self-doubt, and it kindly embraces it by showing that we all have something even if we can't see it. and I loved the way Kyou said to Tooru that she also has a plum on her back. These two are so precious that I can't even.

And I know Yuki was trying to prevent Tooru's onigiri from being wasted, but forcing someone to eat something they don't like like that was really mean. I'm sure he wouldn't like to have something shoved down his throat like that. And I dislike the way he took his frustration out on Kyou by kicking him with everything he had back at school, even though Kyou was the one who started it. Well, time to get to know a new face!

For starters Kyo is an uninvited guest at the Sohma's house, he has no right to complain about the food or be rude towards Tohru, specially since Tohru worked so hard to prepare all that food. Add that Kyo & Yuki don't like to be around each other, they just notice the good points of each other, but they play the rival card too well, so there's no need for etiquette from Yuki to pamper his rival who happens to be just a smooch at his own house more frequently.

Kyo’s not really an uninvited guest. Sure at first when he crashed through the ceiling, but now he’s been told to live there. And if you call that a mooch, then technically they’re all mooching off Shigure, since it was his house first.

WHAT IS THIS. First 2 episodes adapt chapters 1-3 and then the 3rd episode starts with chapter 8?! And then after opening they start with chapter 4. And then they keep mixing chapters 8 and 4 together. @_@ Didn't think they would introduce Momiji before Kagura (his German sounds funny, lol). But since she appears at the end of the episode, that means next episode will adapt chapter 5 and probably 9 (continuation of the school festival). But what about chapters 6 and 7?! Those are important!

I was hoping they would not skip anything (or at least some very minor things), but that would mean 3 seasons of 25-26 episodes and I know that would be very rare for a shoujo anime nowadays. But Fruits Basket is such a great manga, if they said they will adapt the whole story they shouldn't skip important stuff. T__T I'm extremely scared about future episodes. T__T

Just because he's been told to live there, it doesn't make him a resident, he's still in the definition of a guest (and still he's an outsider of the Sohma and the junishi circle), guests have no right to bitch and moan at food being served on the table. From what I remember it's all Akito's propierty, Shigure it's just the landlord, not the real owner of the land or house.

Beautiful episode, quite possibly the best one yet.

Loving how they're contrasting Ryo and Souma, they're both jealous of each other but they can't recognize their own good traits. However, Tohru's helping they realize that they're more than they give themselves credit for. :)

Really loved the pickled plum analogy Tohru gave, it's strange isn't it? As human we gets jealous of other people so easily that it somehow clouds our ability to see our own strengths.

Tohru's Mother seems like a wonderful person, I really hope we get to see more of her.

"It's easy to understand desire because, everyone has it from birth.
But each person's kindness is pretty much handmade by them,
so it's easy for others to misunderstand it, or assume it's phony.
But Tohru... I want you to believe in people.
Doubting is easy, anybody can do it.
You be the kind of girl who can believe in people.
I just know... that will help someone"

I try my very best to believe in people too.

Looks like we mixed around events from chapters 4 and 8 from the manga for this episode. This results in the school culture festival prep and Momiji's first appearance coming along earlier than when the manga depicted it, as well as leads to some unique changes with events from chapter 4 due to chapter 8's events being mixed in. From what I found for changes...

-A small change from the manga is Hanajima no longer braiding Tohru's hair and Uotani not patting Tohru on the head while Tohru's trying to get her classmates to play Rich Man, Poor Man.
-Tohru's reflection of Yuki and Kyo's good traits and their rivalry also included a brief scene of her changing into her school uniform before leaving work cut from the anime.
-Some changes for when Tohru first encounters Momiji in the anime include her not walking down a flight of stairs before slipping and Tohru being in closer proximity to Momiji, with the boy not having to get up and walk as far toward her.
-Because of Momiji's debut being added earlier than in the manga, this results in the circumstances leading to Tohru meeting with Yuki outside her workplace being changed. There is a removed scene from chapter 4 that shows one of Tohru's co-workers talking about a "pretty kid" waiting outside for someone, before Tohru realizes it is Yuki. Tohru expresses her surprised reaction to seeing Yuki, as depicted from chapter 4, after recovering from the shock of her encounter with Momiji.
-Following the drunken man leading Yuki to transform after Tohru is pushed into him, Yuki's comment remarking that it's his fault for his current situation is not in the anime.
-Following Yuki and Tohru's arrival back to Shigure's house, there is a cut manga scene featuring Shigure and Tohru commenting on the unusual weather before an annoyed Yuki shoves Shigure as he rushes outside.
-Tohru's prep of riceballs for the culture festival being depicted earlier in the anime leads to some changes from the original events depicted in chapter 4. The prep work replaces a cut scene from the manga showing Kyo fuming over Tohru making a leek meal due to his hatred of the food. Also, the amusing scene where Yuki force-feeds Kyo leek gets replaced with Yuki force-feeding Kyo a leek-flavored riceball.

Very great episode, loved it so far ! A nice reveal on Soma & Ryo's situations, it was nice to discover than their rivalry is actually based on a reciprocal jealousy. Though as usual, it comes from a misunderstanding or a lack of communication, that leads to a fissure becoming bigger & bigger : hoping those two will manage to realize they are closer than they think.

Also I'm really curious to discover who are the other members of the clan & their respective transformations.

I don’t think they’re skipping those chapters, it seems like they’re just moving up chapter 8, which worked because it’s theme worked well with the theme of chapter 4. We’ve seen the scene of the sleepover in the last promo that was released, and the hat has very much been emphasized, so I’m assuming they won’t skip it. As for the grandfather chapter, I don’t think they’ll leave that out. I’m actually kinda expecting those two chapters to be an episode together.

We got to learn a little more about kyo and Yuki. It seems they’re pretty jealous of each other and would rather be in each other’s shoes.

I really liked Tohru’s analogy about the rice balls and plums. It was a really cute way to convey something so important.

Also, the German kid was interesting. Even though his German didn’t sound that German lol.

3 episodes into Feelruba and I’m already starting to cry. Did I even cry this early back in the original anime/manga? I don’t think so.

I love the part where the cats cling to Kyou. What a dream... and then you think about how creepy it would be for Yuki and rats. And what about the dragon zodiac? Kyou really lucked out in this aspect.

I especially love the scene where Yuki goes back to the classroom but sees everyone playing cards and decides not to enter. The physical separation by the door also symbolises the emotional separation that Yuki has towards others. It’s as Yuki said; Kyou isn’t guarded towards others, and people naturally gravitate towards him. But Yuki puts up barriers, even if subconsciously, and I do think that others are able to sense it. Wonder if this stemmed from his childhood experience mentioned in episode 2?

Aha, foreigner introduction! I forgot he’s introduced this early. He’s my favourite character in the entire series, and I’m his fanclub president. (And no, I do not take contestation to my position.)

I love, love the umeboshi analogy. It’s really true that we tend to see others’ good points easily, but not so for ourselves. I can’t wait for Tohru to continue pointing out Kyou and Yuki’s good points to themselves. Also, our first onigiri reference! Can’t wait for more.

HAHAHAH the ‘making up’ scene. Maybe it’s because I’m older now, but that scene looks so hilariously gay to me. And yeah, that’s extremely unlikely to happen (especially not like that).

The ending! Next episode will be fun, I can’t wait.

Tohru is such a baka. She's kind and all, but her naivety is a bit too much. I hope she'll get some growth as a character but seems unlikely as it's probably her cuteness that will change everyone around her while she stays the same.

I was waiting for someone to say this because I know this is a common criticism for Tohru. Perhaps it’s an unpopular opinion, but for me, that’s exactly why Fruits Basket works. I don’t want to go into too much details for now because it will be spoiler, but I really don’t think the story can turn out the way it did if Tohru isn’t a naive character. It’s her naivety and kindness that make others warm up to her; without those qualities, they wouldn’t be drawn to her, and we won’t have a story.

Besides, in this episode itself we already see glimpses of why she is the way she is. Her mother told her to be a person who believes in others, because it’s easy to doubt. That in itself necessitates some degree of blind trust, because you don’t know if the stranger you meet will hurt you. But you choose to trust them, to believe in them, even if you get hurt. Some would consider this to be naivety, to be gullible. But it’s also this kind of people that make the world better, and they are the ones who remind us that there is still simple kindness in the world.

Also, have a little faith, would ya? The original manga has 23 volumes, there should be some degree of growth for the protagonist as well.

What a wonderful episode, my hearts really feel warm watching this show although I've already reading the manga before. Tooru is one of the best waifu ever.
I really love her words about everyone have their owns umeboshi in his/her back. But because it's in the back, it was hard to see it for ourselves. Her words and action already saving both yuki and kyou, what an angel <3
Yuki and kyou characters are also developing little by little in the progress, makes me loving them even more.
Can't wait to see the next episode <3

DAMN the plum analogy is so good! It actually makes a lot of sense. The new girl at the end is adorable. Seems like both our MCs are falling for her. Really cute and good episode.

dialouge heavy, but the writing is pretty good so far so im fine with this.

also so many life lessons are being taught in this anime and I love it, because its like not right in your face/cringy. the analogy with plums on peoples backs for example, I thought that was amazing.
