Cyberpunk 2077, various new adaptations of cyberpunk works, this anime by Watanabe, Aramaki and Kamiyama...

I'm very very pleased. A Blade Runner anime is something I wanted for a long time (despite being unfamiliar with the Blade Runner movies and the book.. yet).

What do you think about this?

It's something I never knew I wanted, but I need it badly.

Just looking at the two directors previous work, I don't feel encouraged that this will be a good adaptation.

This is big.

As a blade runner fan it's like a dream come true, cyberpunk and animation is a great combination, especially with Watanabe as a director i expect a lot, but seem he wouldn't direct the show so...anyway, still the staff look good enough to be excited. Hope it will live to the hype.

Ewww. I looked at the trailers for their previous work. It's like video game graphics. Like fallout 4 characters. What is adult swim thinking.

The Blade Runner 2022 short was extremely well done. Remembering that from last year, I can't wait. This is going to be amazing.

Fuck yes. Huge cyberpunk fan. I really enjoyed the blackout 2022 short anime. Excited for this as Watanabe(most famous for Bebop) continues to direct this along with Kenji Kamiyama (Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex). I'm really excited about this and have high hopes

As a Bade runner fan I am hyped for this but I am worried about the studio which is doing this project. I hope it won't be full CGI anime.

It's gonna be great, i trust Watanabe. Also it would be cool to hire Yoko Kanno for composer, but don't think it's going to happen.

People on here saying it won't be good judging by previous work. What? You mean Bebop, Champloo, Space Dandy. Yeah those all sucked lol. Right.

Just to clarify, Watanabe is the producer, not the director. When they said previous work they meant of the studio behind it who does 3D CGI anime. Kamiyama of GiTS SAC and Aramaki are directing this.

These two directors have directed stuff like Stand Alone Complex, Metal Skin Panic: MADOX-01, Megazone 23, and Appleseed...
They've also contributed to series like Bubblegum Crisis, Akira, Memories, Roujin Z, Genocyber, Jin-Roh, and Blood: The Last Vampire.

To be fair, their more recent work has been CGI work for this studio, but aside from Netflix's Ultraman, it's not even necessarily terrible looking CGI (Just look at Appleseed Alpha).
I definitely would prefer hand-drawn animation as well, but as long as there's a budget, even a CGI series should turn out good with these guys at the helm.

Basically, what I'm trying to say is... the directors aren't the problem. The medium of CGI is the problem, but these guys are so good that they can overcome it.

There has been quite a decline in the cyberpunk, neo-noir, post-apocalyptic genres these days. That's one of the reasons I admire the golden 90's anime for not holding back with ideas.
They showed us the action-packed, well-written, philosophically sophisticated R+ anime we can look into even after decades. That's why I'm hoping for a new wave in the anime industry regarding these genres, especially from platforms like 'Netflix'.

I just wish to watch anime like Ergo Proxy, Evangelion, Bebop, Akira and GITS again.
But painfully correcting myself about the possibility of their conceptions.

Cyberpunk never left anime in my opinion, at least not in the way that left Hollywood... but see a Blade Runner anime is a dream come true, I hope this gonna be a masterpiece.

I hope so. Last great cyberpunk anime we got was Psycho-Pass in 2012 tho we have gotten several decent ones lately e.g. No Guns Life, Akudama Drive, and Vivy with upcoming ones like Pluto, Akira remake and Blade Runner, i wouldn't anticipate it highly but there IS hope for cyberpunk's return to anime. We'll see.

If you want some good cyberpunk and possibly the beginning of the genre, you should read William Gibson’s Neuromancer. It’s a classic and for a reason. Actually I love the entire Sprawl trilogy, even though many don’t like the two sequels much.
