THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE. ---------------------------------------- I gotta admit, Marie is a brave girl. Despite her personality, she's not afraid to put herself at risk to protect Rin. Got mixed thoughts about Eleonore from this episode. I don't find the character appealing so far even with the storytelling. Got really mixed thoughts on the action. They tried to make it dark and grimmy but I wasn't sold on it. One more episode left for the TV series and I'm not keeping my hopes up. |

Got to see some of Kei's backstory. Marie is quite brave to protect Ren. She got beat up bad. Eleonore is just too strong. The action in this episode was decent. One more episode left. I'm curious how it's going to end. |

Quite a decent episode for DI´s standards. They managed to make their much needed point with the early backstory of Kei and the following developments were also entertaining and coherent. Props for Marie´s bravery and Lisa´s sacrifice. I am looking forward to Ren´s apparent partnership with Kotomine Trifa. Also lol at this part, we finally have our mecha party. |

No lol it's just you and a couple other shonentards being too dumb to understand without half an hour of exposition for everything. I'd put a bit of blame on Crunchyroll since their subs are shit and confusing but everything so far has been completely explained and anyone paying attention should be able to tell what's going on unless they have sub 70 IQs. For example: In episode 0 we see Valeria Trifa's real body and we see how it changes to this one, LAST EPISODE he has a 5 minute conversation with Lisa where she outright says that he has Reinhard's body now but then there's retards in this same thread thinking that he IS reinhard despite the fact that we've seen the two of them at the same time doing different things. Why do you think he is called Priest of the Grail or Divine vessel? what do you think this "grail" or "divine vessel" he has is? Just one example of how dumb people here are, I'm sorry but being glad that there are other retards around is not a good really a good thing |

Very happy to see Best Girl Beatrice, even if it was a non-speaking role in a short flashback. ZionPulse said: Of course, he can now use ZA WARUDO!, yes, that makes perfect, logical sense. Indeed, it actually does make sense. The problem is the anime only lightly covered what a Beri'ah is, even though we've seen a few of them now. So I guess I may as well talk about Ewigkeit, since it's becoming relevant and the anime probably won't explain it any further than what Kei's lecture touched upon a few weeks ago. This will be a bit lengthy. Regarding Ewigkeit So, this was mentioned briefly in an earlier episode, but I want to go into a little more detail than what Kei did. As you (hopefully) are aware by now, everybody involved in these shenanigans has a weapon called a "holy relic", or an "Ahnenerbe". An Ahnenerbe is a bit more than just a weaponized item, though. I'm just going to quote Kei here since her lecture in the visual novel describes it pretty well: "Achievers who accomplish great feats that can't be considered normal or accomplished with a proper mindset. If those are holy men, then you can perhaps call murderers of great scores of people 'holy men' as well. Kill one man, and you are a murderer. Kill a thousand men, and you are a hero. Kill millions of men, and you are a conqueror. Kill them all, and you are a god. [...] That is the gist of what we call an Ahnenerbe. An instrument of violence that has devoured an excess amount of blood - or something that serves as a catalyst to a disaster of that caliber. As such, they're laced with unbelievably high-level grudges and curses. To the point where a mere vessel can possess a certain will of its own." It's been mentioned before by several people that power in this story runs on souls. It's the Ahnenerbe that devour these souls and grow in strength, which ties back to why Kasumi was involuntarily killing people way back when - to "feed" Ren's guillotine. There was a really awesome sequence where Wilhelm and Rusalka were trying to chase her down on the bridge where Reinhard later appears, but sadly it was cut from the anime (although we did get a very short, easily forgettable shot of an explosion on the bridge, shortly before Ren gets the guillotine. Likely the aftermath of the chase sequence; maybe an extra scene for the blu-ray release?). So if these things are bloodthirsty soul-eaters, how does one control them? Well, that would be were Ewigkeit comes in, the power granted to everyone by Mercurius. Ewigkeit, or "Eternity" in German, is somewhat like a pact. It's a spell that binds an Ahnenerbe to the user's soul, granting enhanced physical traits as well as regenerative properties (Speed, strength, durability, etc. Typical superhuman stuff you see in anime all the time). Ewigkeit has 4 levels to it, though only the first 3 are relevant at the moment so I'll be skipping the last one. Each level, on top of granting new abilities, also comes with enhanced physical abilities. So, someone at level 2 will be an order of magnitude stronger than someone at level 1, and so forth. Hence why Ren was basically manhandled by Wilhelm at the start of the series (who you may recall was fighting one-handed, and wasn't using his Ahnenerbe. Willingly handicapped himself so he wouldn't instantly kill Ren), and later able to hold his own against Kei without breaking an arm again. Almost like in a role-playing game. Level 1: Assiah/Activation At this stage, the Ahnenerbe has officially bonded with a wielder, who is able to utilize the "concept" of its power. For example, Ren's guillotine cuts things, so that's all he can do at this stage. You might recall him "telekinetically" cutting a soda can in half a while back in a short scene. In the VN he actually misses and cuts the fence instead because he can't control his powers, but eh. Minor details. Level 2: Yetzirah/Formation At this point, the user is able to manifest the Ahnenerbe in a physical form and wield it as a weapon. Ren's guillotine, Kei's sword, Spinne's web, Wilhelm's projectile spikes (actually crystallized blood) etc. are all Yetzirah-level Ahnenerbe. Level 3: Beri'ah/Creation This is where things get interesting. Beri'ah is the ability to manifest and weaponize one's innermost desires. If you're familiar with Fate/Stay Night, this is basically a Reality Marble. We get a glimpse of Ren's in this episode with his time stop ability; his actual desire is something along the lines of "I want my peaceful days to last forever." Beri'ah is almost always triggered through an incantation, a metaphorical/allegorical bit of characterization describing said desire, while also touching upon the character's background a bit. We heard Rusalka's back at the club massacre sequence, and Kei's in the previous episode. "But how was Shirou able to fight against a Yetzirah-level Wilhelm and not die?" you may be wondering. Or you may not, that's cool. But now you are. The non-spoiler answer is that Shirou's basically a daredevil thrill-seeker who gets off on stuff like this. Zelev said: It's all poorly executed and unoriginal, quite frankly. And you are absolutely correct! Dies Irae is unoriginal, the core story is about as generic as it gets, and believe it or not, this is actually a plot point. An important one, too! Where Dies Irae shines though is in the characters, and it's unfortunate that the anime, abridged as it is, is undermining the excellent cast. tambi33 said: I fell asleep watching this episode π those susanoo-like things look amazing; unlike the initial gold one that appeared This story confuses me. The Knights of the black table are there now for that purpose, but why is there two factions? Karl Krafft, Hermes Trismegistus, Alesandro di Cagliostro, Mercurius, and likely countless other names, so take your pick. The story is laid out as an opera, with each character having a different name depending on the "role" they're currently playing (Ren/Zarathustra, Rusalka/Malleus, Rea/Theresia/Sonnenkind, Reinhard/Mephistopheles, etc.). Also there have been two factions since like episode 3, although Valeria's role should be (hopefully) clarified soon. I hope this was all helpful :) |

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Dies Irae. The humour is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of philosophy and metaphysics most of the monologues will go over a typical viewer’s head. There’s also Mercurius’ nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Friedrich Nietzsche’s literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these monologues, to realise that they’re not just chunni as fuck- they say something deep about FOREKNOWLEDGE. As a consequence people who dislike Dies Irae truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn’t appreciate, for instance, the humour in Mercurius’ existential catchphrase “Acta est Fabula” which itself is a cryptic reference to Nietzsche's "Also Sprach Zarathustra". I’m smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Masada’s genius wit unfolds itself on their computer screens. What fools.. how I pity them. π And yes by the way, I DO have an LDO tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the ladies' eyes only- And even they have to demonstrate that they're within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand. Nothin personnel kid π |

Hmm, the running away sequence was just weird to me. But at least we had Riza acknowledge that she wants to save Rea too. I may have missed something before, but I didn't realize that the Priest guy and Reinhart are on opposing sides? I thought the Priest was part of the round table, so I thought he wanted all of the gates to be opened. @DoctorFatBird thank you, once again, for taking the time to explain things. The writing, the lack of character development, and the fact that the plot is simplistic but convoluted to the point of confusion is a big problem here. It has nothing to do with IQ points, but lack of story planning to convey the VN to anime only viewers. I'm sure Dies Irae is a great series, if you've played the VN, but the anime isn't doing any justice to it. Instead of insulting those who are confused and using words like 'retard' to put them down, why not just explain things or talk about how much you like the show. There's no need to be condescending to those who don't like what you like. |

Masada tweeted about it, saying it is something of an inbetween of activation and formation, akin to how Ren materializes Marie. Basically they manifest the souls they have gathered, but can't be arsed to actually form them into their relic. https://twitter.com/masada_takashi/status/940880698008915968 They do look kinda silly sometimes though. :P |

Nothin personnel kid π Thank you for this post lmao. |

[2] Dies Iraefags are the new Fatefags. And this coming from a Nasu fan (the classic stuff only, like the KNK movies, the 3 routes of 1rst Fate, Tsukihime VN and manga, and Mahoyo), before he sold off to fate/milking saberfaces. |

Haha, I thought about similar thing. xD Also, I laughed after reading several posts from above claiming that the anime is alright, just us (some viewers) don't want to understand it or are too stupid for this show. Well, I'm not sure whether it was serious or just trolling around, but definitely funny to read. One sad thing is that I like F. Nietzsche's philosophy and if people say that this anime shows beauty of his philosophy "understood only by burr supreme intellectuals durr" then I prefer to remain somebody called by Dies Irae's fans as stupid and stick to researching certain philosophical thoughts by science, not by searching them in crappy shows like "Dies Irae" is. ;p |
