THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
Haha, Nikaidou can be so loud. Funny guy. I'm glad this episode captured the comedic moments from the manga.

As expected, the psychology of this series still remains intact even for this episode. It balances out the humor and more serious moments. The narratives between the characters and shogi game was also a nice added touch to this epsiode. Felt like a buildup and not to mention, Souya is someone to watch out for this season.

Not a fan of Kyoko but it's refreshing to see her back.

Never thought I would say it before today but..well said Gotou!
Boy that was an heavy start; last episode's focus on Rei's new happy life kind of swept away last season's defeat for Shimada. The aftermath is far from over, actually who knows when/if he might recover; though I do think he will recover, probably thanks to Rei this time. Rei's flashback with Gotou immidiately made me lose that little hope I had for him to not be a total jerk. You won't fool me again! Or maybe not..that scene at the hospital.. ç_ç
Meanwhile Souya made another one bite the dust.

Great episode.

Glad to see Nikaidou again.

I really like how the episode explored Gotou's character more. I really liked it when he spoke up to defend Shimada and while Rei's flashback do paint him as a jerk, there's a definitely a more caring side to him. The hospital scene with him going to visit his wife was really sad.
It's kinda like Rei says, it's hard to figure out whether you should dislike Gotou or not. Humans are too chaotic and complex. xD

The moment the president said that Kumakura was checkmated at exactly the 17th move game me chills. Holy shit!

Kyouko's back again, kinda glad to see her as well, her interactions with Gotou were amusing.

Poor Kumakura, he made hole in the wall. Defeat is frustrating, especially when you give it your all. :(

Nikaidou getting mad because he's not having a match against Kiriyama was amusing. Gotou spoke the cold, hard truth. It was nice of him to defend Shimada. There is a good side to him. Him visiting his wife at the hospital was sad. Rei can't figure out if he should hate him or not. Kyouko is back again. Souya beating Kumakura at the 17th move was surprising. Kumakura appeared calm at first, but he made a hole in the wall. Defeat is not a good feeling.

I like how this episode showed a different perspective of Gotou's character. On the surface he seems like a stereotypical jerk that exists for the sole purpose of attracting the audience's hatred, but he actually does have a bit of decency.

I felt bad for Kumakura after his loss, he seemed composed at first but defeat is always frustrating and that hole in the wall is proof of that.

I loved how Gotou, despite his cold exterior and the bad memories Rei had of him, is not a jerk all the time and not only shows respects for rivals like Shimada (the moment when he tells the true to those two bastards who were badmouthing Shimada was very awesome), but also deeply loves his wife (and the reason why he has Kyouko along with him is probably because he feels alone). That part really moved me. I like too his relationship with Kyouko is (hands tied aside) friendlier of what was implied at the beginning of the series.
Rei wondering if he should hate or love him was a nice detail. Like, if he is seeing life is not as black and white as one can think at first.

And Kyouko, holy shit, Kyouko, how can you be so fucking adorable? How?! Damn... That part nearly gave me diabetes. I need more of her now.

Between how he ate the cake the previous episode and how he elft the wall due his defeat against Souya, Kumakura seems like an amusing fellow. Kinda feel sorry for him for his lost after all that hard work, Souya is indeed a monster.
I hope we will manage to see more of him in the future.

This episode is a masterpiece in writing.

Here we have the bad guy stepping in to defend one of the nicest guy of the show.
Yes indeed, in real life it's not all white or black.
And then we see Kyouko helping buying stuff for Gouto's wife, Gotou's visiting his wife at the hospital, visibly emotionally involved, and a not so abusive relationship between Gotou and Kyouko as one might have thought it would be in the beginning (like Rei still thinks is).

A bit like in the first season when we first discovered a complete rotten Kyouko to then understand that she is rotten because she is broken.

And the music was sooooo on point about the heaviness of losing for these competitors and the heaviness of Gotou's presence and story.

I love that. I just love that.

While it wasn't something I expected to come up anytime soon, I absolutely love the fact that they took the time to explore Gotou's character a little, and show that ultimately he's not just the bad guy Rei thinks of him as. It was nice to see Gotou defend Shimada like that, even if his choice of words was rather blunt (but also absolutely correct, at least in my opinion). Also, it was insightful to see Gotou visit his wife at the hospital, as it was an excellent way of showing how much of an emotional investment he still has in her despite his relationship with Kyouko (does she know why Gotou asked her to buy all those things for him though? I feel kinda sorry for her if not). Also, it was nice to see that their relationship isn't really abusive like Rei has been led to believe it is.

Overall, an excellent episode focusing on a character who sorely needed some development, and that's not even mentioning the plethora of other things going on this episode.

Great episode again.

The scene where Gotou made his entrance was definitely powerful, good to see that he didn't loose any of his cold charm, yet we got also to another side of his during this episode, quite the contrast. I already liked him for what he was,but I definitely appreciate his character even more now.

Especially for his caring side regarding his woman, also loved the interaction between him and Kyouko, the latter one almost made me fall for her and her cuteness at times :3

And Souya defended his title after all, what a monster.

Hope this show keeps the quality, cause it's such a treat to watch.

Tbh, I don't get the shogi but I realized what Souya did with the last move that conclude the game. Him and Kumakura could have keep on playing after Souya did that move but he already had Kumakura in dead end with 17 moves played afterwards. So, Souya settled his victory several moves beforehand. Quite impressive. Just dare beat this intelligent monster.

Love the focus on Gotou, he has MANY facets to his character.

He defended Shimada from those jerks that badmouthed him, even going so far that he's getting thinner and laughing about it, i wanted Rei to put them in their place but surprisingly Gotou stepped in.

Is that the first time we see his wife? I think so, that was a touching moment and also the moment with Kyouko who still clings onto him.

Nice episode.
I am in love with the background art in this show, especially at night. The moon is gorgeous as well as the city.

Nice of Gotou to defend Shimada, but still not the biggest fan of his. Kyouko is so sly getting into his room.

Hopefully we see the Kawamoto Sisters soon.

Great END Card!

This episode has so many feels.

First of all, the storytelling was as always on point. Thou they really made me hate Gotou on the first season, this episode shows the complexity of his character and how people can't be intrinsically good nor bad. I bet he's suffering a great deal for his wife, who btw is so so beautiful, and at the same time feels alone. Also, they showed Kyouko's softer and playful side.

Another commendable thing is every time in this series that they show us Souya i feel butterflies in my stomach, such a beautiful character, his features, hair, aura and even his voice (by no other than my beloved Ishida Akira) i hope we get to know him better soon.

And of course, baby Nikaidou is back and he's as noisy as ever <3

As i already mentioned before, i'm loving how they are showing us Rei's changes...he's way more open and even cheerful now, a breath of fresh hair.

Gotou is still a scumbag. Standing up for Shimada against some randoms won't change that. I don't remember the details about his wife in season 1, but finding out that she's in a coma makes him worse. While Kiyouko is a broken girl with daddy issues, it's Gotou who's taking advantage of her in the "relationship".

I was kinda toying around with this idea too, but considering how long their relationship has been going on it's more than likely that they have done it. He might just not be so keen on it now because his wife's condition is worsening or something? Or maybe they have done it but only when he was drunk or something. Kyouko definitely seems like the type to take advantage of the situation when opportunities arise.

The best thing about this series is the relationships between the characters and the MC itself is really interesting. I hope we can get deep into each of them. I want to know what mess does Rei have with Kyouko (bet they were fcking and sh*t) and the MC himself. I kind of remember Rei said he didn't actually liked Shogi when he was adopted. I wonder if he has gotten to like it or is it just something he cannot stop doing.

I thought for sure that Gotou and Kyoko are having a physical relationship as this is what has been implied but maybe it was all a misunderstanding? Hmm... I can't say for sure but this episode made it kind of clear that they're not like that? It's obvious Gotou cares for his wife but would that stop him from seeking comfort from another woman? I guess Umino wants us to interpret things on our own without spelling them for us. The same for Rei and Kyoko. We still don't know what happened back then. Did she violate him? Maybe or maybe not but I guess it was left to the reader/viewer's imagination. I really hope Umino sheds light on this eventually.

Now with 2 episodes I'm sure that the second season is significantly different from the first one despite adapting from the same manga. The first season is more descriptive, slower, run deeper. The second season is more energetic, more action, faster, more comedy. They're both good but it'll take some times for me to adapting to second season's faster pace.

While I love this series focus on other competitors and how it's able to flesh them out with unique personalities and give them backstories I really hope we get some episodes focused on Rei and the three sisters soon.
It's been a long time in terms of episodes since we saw that.
I still don't like Gotou but I do understand him and his motivations a bit better now and Kyouko continues being a wonderfully awful human being, I actually think they deserve each other.

Uhhh guys. Gotou has physically abused both Rei and Kyoko, who are both less than half his age (and size). He's dismissive of them both. We just gunna fall for abuser logic and a comatose wife that easy? Smh. He tied Kyoko up because she was a nuisance and that was... funny? Guys. G U Y S

That was a good line back there, seriously.

The whole triangular relationship b/w Rei x Kyouko x Gotou is a jumbled mess. I can't figure out what's going on in their minds when they interact with each other dammit.

Why's Kyouko infatuated with Gotou?
What are Gotou's true intentions?
Why's Rei so helpless? What does he wants to do?

When I ponder over it, this just can't get any more infuriating when I see them taking that mysterious and complex stance.

Anyways, that was an excellent episode. We also see a new bold figure emerging in the world of shogi.

I think that's the point neither Gotou or kyouko are good people. This episode in my opinion was to illustrate that Gatou isn't just an asshole for asshole sake. He's dealing with his problems by lashing out at people it's not healthy nor should it be treated as such. Kyouko has daddy issues and has latched onto an older man who doesn't really care to have her in his life.
