Reminisence episode with school drama...

Kinda sad that teenagers are this age often faces social problems in their lives. As expected, things took a worse and Ai got called upon to inflict punishment. I wanted to see the usual punishment thing though..oh well. Sensei still got what was coming to him.

That season 1 ending changing into the season 4 ending cracks me up every time. They couldn't even bother to put in the minimum amount of effort required to fix that. Laughable...

Don't do this to me. I already miss classic JS and the disappointment with 4th season just gets deeper with every of these reruns. Wasn't this one of the first episodes of JS, where it wasn't all about getting revenge? I love it. Maybe not the best writing (there are some illogical and over exaggerated bits in the story), but such a calm, yet impactful episode. Ant it still looks so beautiful with a fantastic soundtrack. Though i hope not all remaining reruns will be from the first season, otherwise i can't understand why even do this if you are not picking cream of the crop.

Haven't watch the episode yet but is this another rerun of old episodes?
But it's important to remember that a movie review is subjective;it only gives you one person's opinion.

It doesn't matter if you like LoGH,Monster etc.If you are a jobless or college/school dropout living in your mom basement, you are still an unintelligent loser. Taste in anime does not make you a better person. If elitist don't exist, casual pleb and shit taste also don't exist.

Yes, and that is going to be the case for the remaining episodes as well.

But that was her decision. She could've done something different, like maybe trying to show the teacher that not all is bad. He helped her in a way to break out of this depression, she could've tried to to the same. Yet she chose the easiest way to solve his problems - send him to hell. I suppose she will regret her decision later.

Only one episode from season 2? That would be a shame. That season probably is the beast of all three. I would prefer seeing three episodes from season 2 and none of season 3.

So I haven't posted anything on these discussion boards yet, but since we're more then halfway through, I thought now would be a good time to talk about my thoughts and feelings on this new season.

As an avid lover and viewer of this show for many years now, I can say that I was beyond overjoyed when they announced this new season.

However, when it was announced that it would only be six new episodes, I imminently got a bad taste in my mouth, because if this show does one thing well, it's slow paced stories that equal in the long term, wonderful long term development and plot.

That is one of my biggest complaints with this season, the run time of each episode was cut down and the amount of episodes were cut down dramatically. That can't happen with this show. Those two things, along with atmosphere, music, characters, and development make this show worth my time and energy and money. (I own a lot of JS merch)

If the time and episodes hadn't been cut down, I'm sure due to the budget and fact that the series hasn't aired in almost a decade, then I'm positive it would have been much more well received. I mean, the original director is back and I feel that in the way the six new eps were done, but it's just not enough time to develop anything.

With that said, I'm very sad and disappointed. I have wanted a new season for years now, but I don't want one if it's just going to ruin it's standing in the anime community, I do not want mediocrity in something that is so much more then average anime trash.

And on that note, what makes me more angry and sad, is that now with this new Hell Girl and that, let's face it, interesting ending, what will they do next? Cause I've heard this is supposed to be the "climax" of the series. That isn't a fair ending for this show, it deserves so much more. Also so many UNANSWERED questions. Even more then Mitsuganae's ending.

I think I'll be even more mad if they don't do another season, to make up for this okay, somewhat bad one.

I don't mean to complain, because I'm happy to get any content, but I can't deal with undeveloped and lazy content, don't give me anything, if you're just gonna screw me and many other people over.

Not to say that all of it was awful, because truly it wasn't. Episode 4 was fantastic and one of the best client stories I've ever seen come out of the series. I was angry and hocked 2 seconds in, and the sadness and hatred I felt was very real. Also the romance between Sakura and Wanyuudou was heartbreaking and extremely interesting, because it's a situation we've never seen played out before in the sow, unless you count FanFiction.

And again the ending, after I watched it a few times and talked it over with my best friend, who is also a huge fan, I decided I really liked it and wanted to see more. What an interesting and show altering twist! So now we have two Hell Girls? Or don't we? What will happen? Also Yamawaro is now Michiru's companion/boyfriend thing XD! What's up with that? See what I mean, a lot of unanswered questions and not enough budget to do it.

I could go on for another 2,000 words or so, but my main take away's from this are; we need a 5ht season to make up for this 4th season, which who really knows at this point.

Each "Remembrance" episode just makes me feel sick and makes me want to go back and watch season 2, the best in my opinion, which I have done to keep myself from crawling into a hole and dying from anime fan grief.

Do any of you agree with my points? Would love to talk about it.

I think that long term development and main plot were never that important in the show. Season 1 had the most clear recurring storyline and after that they kind of brushed that idea away for season 2, which had almost none of recurring story except for the final arc, which was definitely a good payoff. But the show's main strengths lied in well paced, well written episodic stories. And like you said season 4 had basically one good episode, others were over exaggerated, unrealistic, badly paced messes. For me season 4 is like a collection of rejected unused ideas from previous seasons.

And only 6 episodes might've not be the worst thing if done right. How many episodes the final arc of season 2 had? Only 5. And it needed only one episode prior to that for buildup. So 6 strong episodes to tell a very impactful and strong story.
When i heard that there are going to be only 6 episodes for season 4, i hoped for exactly that - no episodic stories, but one strong arc, maybe really some kind of definitive ending to Ai's story. But yeah, as we can see, they failed us.

And i agree with you wholeheartedly, this just can't be the true ending to Jigoku Shoujo. But then again, if Studio Dean did such a half-assed job with this season, i don't think any of the original team cares anymore about JS. They could've done something amazing with these sixth episodes even with limited budget like they did in season 2, unless there will be season 5 and they are just warming up and learning how to stand on their feet again :).

Well, that really is a shame for season 2 with only one episode showcase. At least not the worst episodes from season 3, at least in my opinion.

Sucks that all they're gonna do is recaps from previous episodes honestly

To be COMPLETELY honest, people should have known about this from the get-go the moment when that was announced to have recap episodes. Though yeah, it is disappointing the fact that its only 6 episodes of actual content, the rest being recaps. Honestly... yeah they could have done like only 6 episodes if they aren't going to do anything else with it. But at the same time... I don't really mind this at all.

Not trying to argue but this is just me giving my two cents here.

These episodes are enjoyable but it reminds me that this season could have been so much more. This is suppose to be "the climax" of the series? ... What? It's so frustrating, they should have stop at season 3 or 2.

The saddest thing is not the reruns itself but that they didn't even bother to pick the BEST episodes from the first 3 seasons..and it's not even balanced. 3 eps from s1, 1 from s2 and 2 from s3...

The remaining episodes of this season are all recap. We're not getting anything new here. Does it suck, yep. It was horrible planning to have the recap episodes after the fourth season instead of just having them first and then using the remaining six episodes for the newer stuff. But what can you do? This was their plan from the start.

I'm just hoping that all of this ties into some big story for the next season.

--

As for the episode:

It was nice seeing Hajime and kid Tsugumi again.

It's also nice seeing just how much better the first season was compared to season three and four. This episode was good, because there's no real vengeance here. Just two people who connected and were depressed. I do think it was cruel of the teacher to ask this of his student, but depression does that so it made sense.

Maybe this ties into how Ai is feeling about Michiru becoming Hell Girl. Ai was tired of her life and wanted an end, which is why she's been looking for someone new. Now that Michiru is the new Hell Girl, Ai has to live knowing that she's condemning someone into the same hardships she went through.

Maybe this is how we're meant to look at these episodes? As some sort of philosophical look at Ai and her time as Hell Girl?

Tbh, i was actually happy when i heard it was 6 episodes, because most episodes in the previous 26 episode seasons (especially season 2) were mostly of episodic nature and didn't really feel fundamental to the main storyline. At the very least, not to such an extent that it would make me think they can't deliver a good story in 6 episodes.

I have to agree with you that episode 4 is one of the best, if not the best, in the entire franchise. And the ending indeed does pose some interesting questions. But, the story as a whole was downright awful, i've talked about this in previous episode discussions. The story is exactly the same as Yuzuki's in season 3 every step of the way apart from the ending. But Michiru had even less character than Yuzuki. And season 3 was admittedly the worst season of Jigoku Shoujo before this season came out. As for the ending being interesting, that only becomes relevant if we get another season. Considering the fact that they themselves said that this is the climax of the series and the fact that this season is a low quality cash grab with some of the worse art i have ever seen which took advantage of the nostalgia factor of the viewers who have been waiting 10 years for a new season, we probably won't get a new season. Or we will get a new season many years from now that will be given even less love and care than this one. And just like that, an interesting ending becomes a dull point and completely irrelevant.

What I can't understand is why make a new season with old episodes in them. Why not just make this season like a special or ova? Don't have to make as many episodes and it still feels new

If people are complaining simply about the fact we are getting recap episodes, they are in the wrong because it was something that we knew for a long time. My problem is, these are reruns, not recaps. Ok, they are doing some new intros at the beginning of every reminiscence episode, but it's just some mindless fun. How cool would it be if they replaced those intros (and added small outros as well) with some short monologues from Ai that actually give us some context and insight into her mindset and psychological state, something akin to what @MonoJuMal suggests in his post.

If it was because of that, then it would pretty much work in the show's favor. I have to pretty much agree on that at least... adding monologues in order to give some enhance on the perspective. Which could have worked a lot better and could make the experience different and a bit of a spark here.

I just think when people complain about that aspect, some people even knew about this from the get-go. For those that didn't... well, I can't really blame them for not knowing this detail, so I digress on that end.

All of this negativity from fans could have been avoided if Deen simply showed the recaps in the first half of this season. That way, we would slowly get hyped to see the new story. We would have something to look forward to. Instead, we are now at a point where i'm seriously contemplating watching the episodes (since we know which episodes are getting recaps) right now, just because i don't want to bother waiting for them on a weekly basis.
