| I consider Higurashi a masterpiece but i absolutely hated shiki, especially the ending. Which of the two is it more similar too? is the ending tragic and unsatisfying? Thank you. |
| I found this rather unsatysfying as a whole. It started off well for me, but midway-towards the end of I was losing intrest. Hell Girl is much much better than this. That said, I enjoyed Shiki and Higurashi. |
| I liked Higurashi for the dementia part, and shiki for the story part. For GH I find it rather interesting, for another reason. At some point everything become fucked up but is somehow related to the main plot. There are a lot of things happening and a lot of actions, that's what's interesting. I would say the background is the one of Higurashi (there's some events revolving around a dam) but it has more of shiki's vibe. |

| I would say it's more Mystery and Psychological versus Shiki which is more Horror and Thriller. To the extent it's like either Higurashi and Shiki though and is usually recommended alongside them it's probably not so much because of the story or execution, but more the general feel and atmosphere of a small rural village experiencing mysterious phenomena, even though they go in completely different directions and tell wholly different stories. This is much less horror than either Shiki or season one of Higurashi, in my view. It has a creepy and "confronting the unknown" type vibe but isn't aiming for outright horror; maybe a bit of suspense. It's more slow-paced than either of them though and I would say feels more like a cross between the setting of both (Hinamizawa or Sotoba; rural Japanese villages cut off from the outside world to an extent) and the pacing and storytelling style more akin to Serial Experiments Lain or Haibane Renmei; in that it's a little more abstract, indirect, and dreamlike (though definitely not to the extent of SEL especially, but you get the gist). |
