THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
Pretty good episode, animation style, and action were on par with the way it's done.

Plus we got the main characters introduced including Shimazu. In the meantime, I really like the fantasy setting and the violence reflected in the story. Yoichi (the trap archer) also has a cool feel to his personality. Might have to get used to the comedy at some timings but I think it works so far for the show.

Catchy ED theme song.

While I really like the concept and the art style I couldn't help but get the feeling that something was "off" the whole time. It's not necessarily the animation but more so the composition I'd say.

That may be just me but I also couldn't quite get used to the extreme mood swings from comedy and serious time. Takes probably time to get used to it but for the moment it feels very jarring.

I love the visuals of the ED tho!

The comedy itself didn't bother me, it's just that you have to know a thing or two about Japanese history in order to get what they're saying. Which I don't. Awks.

Other than that, it was okay.

One of the best ED's this year though.

The action is really well done and the animation style is awesome

This first episode is basically the first half of the special edition

First half was very bloody and brutal, as expected. Then the actual plot kicked in and we mostly got talking and setup I assume will go into next week. So I'm wondering if those who appear in front of desk guy really have died and he picks a new universe for them from all the doors, but it's gotta have more to it than that. Regardless, definitely interested so far.

That was a great start.

The opening battle segment was just magnificent. Violent, bloody and just straight out brutal. At the same time it was really cool to watch, Toyohisa cutting through the enemy was just way too cool.
The art and animation are excellent, I love it.

Definitely interested in what's happening, I'm liking the overall premise and the man with the glasses sending people to different universe's definitely poses some intrigue. Why are people being chosen and why are they being sent?

As for the comedy/satire, I get a sense of how it's a play/rant by the historical characters learning of what happened post their demise, If only I knew more about Japanese history, I would have probably understood it much better.

Looking forward to the next episode.

It is basically the first half of the special edition, but the beginning part was added in compared to the SE.

I am really looking forward to this, b/c I like the concept, the art style, and I personally think the random comedy bits are fine. Helps that I understand basic Japanese history, too. :D

I really love its action choreography, and art style/animations. And the music is good too. The comedic moments feel out of place though, but really interesting premise and I liked the addition of the first scene that wasn't in the SE. And that ED is awesome :D

Didn't enjoy this episode at all, basically just a waste of time with empty action and dialogue. However, I did find the concept very interesting so it remains to be seen how well the anime can expand on it.

I didnt liked the scene that they put jokes about history between nobunaga and the mc and a second later it ends up melodramatic with oda talking about his son's death.Comedy doesnt fit in this kind of anime it ruins it,like 1/3 of the episode was like a comedy i mean....I was expecting something "darker".

Very interesting so far, but as someone who has no knowledge of Japanese history, I have no idea what they're talking about half the time. Also, the comedy is terrible and tonally jarring to boot, so hopefully there's less of that and more action going forward.

Think 3rd or 4th episode may cover up to where I read. I never even continued it lol I'd even forgotten the MC's name.

Well it started off with some nicely animated badass samurai action, added some intrigue with the whole "white hallway full of doors" and I'm really enjoying it. And then they go and spoil the serious mood with a bunch of comedy nonsense. What the fuck, pick a tone and stick with it.

Pretty meh IMO, though it does a good job at showcasing its basic premise. Also nice art style.

The comedy was definitely the weakest part. It just feels very out of place. I just hope it doesn't end up like Kabaneri. (God that show was a mess)

The direction's really kinetic and energetic, which is cool and different from lot of anime coming out as of late. Looking like a "rule of cool" show thus far.

That being said, the humour was poorly implemented and unfunny and I really didn't like the CG.

Overall, it's looking solid but I sincerely doubt it'll hold a candle to Hellsing Ultimate.
Take care of yourself

This was probably my most anticipated watch for the season. It sure has that Kouta Hirano style. But I really didn't think this would have comedy bits. And I'm... a bit put off by them. I enjoyed it quite a bit, yet I really don't feel like the comedy belongs in a show like this at all. Still quite interested in it, and will 100% continue watching it. Just... not a fan of the comedy. And also my complete non-understanding/knowing of Japanese history. Really catchy ED though.

I loved the first part of the episode. Awesome art and a high energy style that I really dig. You really felt the force and energy in the blows of the people fighting.

The second half was hit and miss. I liked the premise, but the execution was a bit off. The chibi comedy was pretty hit and miss. Overall it really feels like a Hellsing clone.

Reading some of peoples reactions, it always surprises me how far removed anime viewers have come from the action/sci-fi crowd of some 20 years ago. Nowadays young viewers want tons and tons and tons of dialogue and exposition whereas back in those days it was a lot more "show don't tell" I'm not saying one is better than the other, it has just changed a lot.

Personally I liked it overall. Got some very similar vibes from Hellsing Ultimate both in terms of style and comedy. I probably shouldn't expect a deep plot so I am hoping for tons of good action and characters. Though I will admit I got a bit lost when they were mentioning other characters from the past and the clans/war and stuff because they didn't feel that important to know. Felt like unnecessary info dumping. I am very excited to see how the dub turns out from FUNIMATION if done right.

This episode was pretty much just the first half of the OVA. Now I'm starting to wonder what was even the point of the OVA........

Like just about everyone here, my biggest problem with this show is the comedy. I really like just about everything else about this show, but the random jumps from serious and dark to comedic and lighthearted just doesn't fit for a series like this. Just like when I watched the OVA, the first thing I thought of when seeing the comedy scenes was Hellsing Ultimate, which suffered from the same problem. If Kouta Hirano is going to make stuff like this and Hellsing, he should definitely leave the comedy out.

Otherwise, a pretty solid start and I'm really glad this is uncensored.

Hellsing was enjoyable for the western audience because its events are relatable by us. This episode threw a lot of references to major historical japanese figures and events that western audience won't relate to.

That said, both are awful. Hellsing wasn't better. Both have some interesting things that got shat on by shitty comedy.

I like how it spent little to no time on the exposition and jumped straight into the action. Too many shows these days rely on infodumps rather than following 'show don't tell' rule.

In other news, it's obviously dumb and violent, just as it should be.

Okay, so I finished the episode and I have mixed feelings around it. For one thing and one hand, I liked it, it was enjoyable and at the very least entertaining, but then the other half tells me that this was not that good, mostly while the comedy was fine... the placement where it was done was pretty out of place. And I literally had to process my words for this since I didn't liked how it was done for the comedy aspect. But overall I guess my mix feelings are there.

Not to mention that is it just me or when I saw the blood in the first half, I thought of ketchup? I seriously thought of ketchup with the entire blood going around... Literally.
