According to a post made on NHK's anime blog, a second season of supernatural anime Kyoukai no Rinne (RIN-NE) has been announced for Spring 2016. The series will be adapted into 25 episodes and include new characters. A key visual for the second season has also been revealed.

Kyoukai no Rinne is a manga written by Rumiko Takahashi which began publishing in April 2009. The series runs in Weekly Shounen Sunday magazine and currently has 26 volumes in print. The manga's 27th volume will be published on September 18, 2015. Kyoukai no Rinne had already received a 25-episode TV anime adaptation for Spring 2015, and the final episode of the first season will air on September 19, 2015.

Synopsis
As a child, Sakura Mamiya mysteriously disappeared in the woods behind her grandma's home. She returned safe and sound, but since then, she has had the power to see ghosts. Now a teenager, she just wishes the ghosts would leave her alone! At school, the desk next to Sakura's has been empty since the start of the school year. Then one day, her always-absent classmate shows up, and he's far more than what he seems! (Source: MU, edited)

Wow. Didn't realise this series was popular enough to get a season 2.

Great news.

This show is underrated and another season is most welcoming. There's plenty to adapt from the manga still for a 2 cour. Spring will be fun again.

It will probably be no different to the first season, which has started to get seriously boring now, so I really don't see the point.

Besides, is it even remotely popular to justify a sequel?

Brains Base is literally incapable of making second seasons. Every time it's happened, the show went to another studio. I'm sure the same will happen with this.

Certainly wasn't expecting a sequel from this. I suppose I'll watch it; the first season isn't anything spectacular but it wasn't exactly bad.

Thank you so much NHK! Seriously, I can't wait for this. Some of the best characters will appear in that season.
I wonder what else they will adapt in that season, there is more than enough material after all.

RINNE can be surprisingly funny and endearing when it wants to be. I'd say it's definitely deserving of a 2nd season. You could do a lot worse, honestly.

Supposedly, the disc sales are not that great, but since it's NHK, it doesn't really matter. Which also gives me hope for a 3rd season of Baby Steps!

Well they are a very small studio with only 1-2 production units active at any time. Which means they are usually only making one show at a time. Giving one thing a sequel means never having made another thing in the first place. Yes, they have many great shows that could have used sequels. But if each of those shows went for three seasons, 2/3rds of the shows we have now would never have been created.

If you look at the shows from them that get continued, they're almost all fantasy / slice of life shows. Those are the ones they've found to be most successful. (Natsume Yuuinjinchou, Spice and Wolf, and now Rinne).

They did have some other great shows, but they have an equally number of terrible ones, too (e.g. Akikan). Most of the good ones either can't have / don't need a sequel (e.g. Baccano), or have already got a sequel.

Yes, they have many great shows that could have used sequels. But if each of those shows went for three seasons, 2/3rds of the shows we have now would never have been created. This is the same deal with people who complain about Kyoto animation not picking up, e.g. Little Busters (since they did a lot of other Key adaptation) or carry on with Haruhi. If they have churned more Key adaptations and Haruhi seasons, well, half the Kyoto series we've had in the last 3-4 years wouldn't exist at all (since a lot of their stuff now is anime original, or only loosely adapted from short stories).

Also, only being able to make one show at a time means they have to go with whatever is guaranteed to keep the studio in business. It doesn't matter how good a show is, if people aren't buying the DVDs. If the studio goes all-out and spends 6 months working on a show that wasn't a good seller in the first place, they will go bankrupt and have to close down. They don't just flip a coin and decide what to make. This is a serious decision.

It would've been better if all they had were sequels tbh, the shows they've been making for the last 3 years kind of sucked. Durarara and natsume would've been their cash cows.

They already made 4 seasons of Natsume, i think they know their own business better than we do.

Sequels are not automatic cash cows. They lost money on Spice and Wolf II. DVDs of sequels only have a market of people who have complete collections of the series so far. So you're selling to a subset of a subset of a subset of the total anime viewers: you're selling to people who (a) like the show and (b) bought all of season 1 and (c) are still interested in collecting the next season and (d) also happen to like where you're going with the new season. Which is a small, small slice of people you could call "fans" or "anime viewers".

But with a new franchise, you have something where anyone can just purchase disk 1 if they like the show so far, without needing to be someone who has an up-to-date collection of the series.

What western otaku think is popular in Japan and what is actually popular in Japan are two different things. That's because anime in Japan is selling to the broad population whereas in The West/America it's selling to hardcore anime nerds. So what a hardcore anime nerd would think is a good series has nothing to do with how successful things actually are. e.g. Love Live School Idol Project sold more DVDs that just about everything else combined.

The best evidence for this is myanimelist news sales charts for manga, some weeks the American top 10 is 50% extreme ecchi harem manga like Highschool DxD and Monster Girls. But these never get near the top of the charts in Japan.

Everything in the American top 10 is about boobs and/or fighting. Whereas the Japanese manga market is more varied. The top 10 usually includes sports, romance, historical drama and other genres.

Omg, yes! I'm so happy, of course Rumiko's work always deserves more seasons. I'm so glad it'll be continuing.

Ranma 1/2 doesn't need a remake. People wishing for that should just stop hoping because it'll never happen. It would improve the animation if so, but still. It won't happen.

Well...what would a Takahashi show be without a runtime of at least 50 eoisodes. She sure likes to stretch things out.
In my opinion her worst work. Mashes her usual gimmicks and characters together to form a mass of uninteresting nothingness..

I was thinking the same thing. I haven't even been bothering to keep up to date with the latest episodes, so I've just got the series on hold for the time being. I'll finish it eventually, but it's seems to have gotten more and more boring as the series progressed. I doubt I'll ever watch the second season.

Well if this get's a season 2 then anything is possible right??

I mean,, everytime dvd/blu-ray sales are posted, I don't think the first season ever broke 1000 sold on any of the current releaseed, so how does that factor into this..

BECAUSE SALES ARENT THE SOLE REASON FOR A SEQUEL

idk where mal got that logic from but its really annoying seeing ppl think that sales are the only reason something needs a sequel....dont ppl understand the source material boost can help, or maybe even the production committee just wanting more sequels, or the author requesting for a sequel, or this or that or 100 other things.
