Since the other thread there is incomplete, I will post the relevant details using Japanese sources as much as possible (such as Oricon, Movie Walker Twitter, and the 2ch thread), as ANN has made various incorrect reports in their articles so I don't trust them to report correctly. See here, where I pointed the error out on ANN and on MAL more than a week ago: http://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=1425678#msg40362566.

After the 4th weekend (23 days), LL Movie has now grossed ¥1,484,857,000 from 1,026,068 attendees. This means it grossed ¥290,433,680 from 206,323 attendees over week 4 + 4th weekend (June 29~July 5):
https://twitter.com/moviewalker_bce/status/617906915780091904

Comparison between other late-night anime franchises...
LL: ¥1,484,857,000 from 1,026,068 attendees
Madoka 3: ¥1,499,260,100 from 1,079,924 attendees
K-ON!: ¥1,139,230,000

The gap is only 14.4M between LL and Madoka 3 after the 4th weekend, reduced from the 42.4M after the 3rd weekend. Since the 5th and 6th weekend visitor benefits have been announced (6th weekend is the sought out film strip), then I can foresee LL being ahead of Madoka 3 at the same point in time, by the 6th weekend.

The most important weekend is coming up for LL now, with film strips being given out as the visitor benefit. So we shall see if it surpasses Madoka 3 at the same point in time, because it is only 22.16M yen behind.

LL: ¥1,854,675,940

LL: ???
Madoka: 1,848,000,281
K-ON!: 1,512,000,000

It will probably hit 2 billion yen by the 7th weekend, as it did very strongly (around 55~60M yen based on a smaller dataset but has been extremely accurate over the 6 weekends) during the Umi no Hi Monday National Holiday, while Tuesday data is at ~25M yen. It should be very close to 1.95B yen by now… so it is very doable to make up that last 50M yen from Wednesday to the end of the 7th weekend. The question again is how much higher than 2 billion yen will the LL Movie end up?

LL Movie will definitely pass Madoka Movie 3 by this weekend. The question is where will it end up? I will be conservative and guess around 2.25~2.35 billion yen, but would not be surprised if it passed 2.5 billion.

K-ON!: ¥1,900,000,000

So the LL Movie passed Madoka Movie 3, and hit the expected 2.2 billion yen. It still has plenty of time to amass more gross, as the 2015 yearly box office gross list won't be out until January 2016.

While I'm happy for the LL franchise, it feels so wrong for this to surpass Madoka in terms of revenue.

For a franchise that is not as big as Naruto, One Piece, Dragon Ball, etc and not a Ghibli film. Earning 2 billion yen is a lot. It even surpassed the earnings of Madoka Magika 3 film.

Here is the Top 10 Highest Japanese Box Office Gross for late-night/midnight Anime Movies. Only 2 movies have ever hit 2 billion yen (K-ON! Movie almost did so as well), and only 4 movies above 1 billion yen.

Key: Rank / Cumulative gross / Initial number of screens (Final number of screens) / Movie Name

Highest Box Office Gross: Late-night/midnight Anime Movies Top 10 (Current as of Sep 8, 2015)
*1 ¥2,550,000,000 121(***) 『ラブライブ! The School Idol Movie』
*7 ¥*,772,973,700 *39(*85) THE IDOLM@STER MOVIE 輝きの向こう側へ
*8 ¥*,743,000,000 *94(***) 劇場版 TIGER&BUNNY -The Rising-
*9 ¥*,700,000,000 *38(*99) 劇場版 マクロスF 恋離飛翼
10 ¥*,650,000,000 *30(*31) 劇場版 マクロスF 虚空歌姫

So, what LL has grossed is incredible considering it is not a mainstream movie such as Youkai Watch, Naruto, Pokemon, Dragon Ball, Ghibli, etc, or a mainstream live action movie such as Shingeki no Kyojin, Kiseijuu, Ansatsu Kyoushitsu, etc.

However, LL is a lot closer to mainstream status when comparing to many other late-night/midnight anime, since it was aired on the Disney Channel, the mobile game male to female player ratio is roughly 51:49, CD sales are very very high compared to other series. It just wouldn't be this popular without the casual fanbase in the mix.

For the limited screening it got, it seems that it did pretty good in Australia. That's good to hear, but expected given how absolutely packed it was when I first saw the movie. It was a lot quieter at the encore session I went to and only two cinemas in the entire country even did encore screenings so I'm not the least bit surprised about the 2nd weekend numbers.

Honestly, what surprises me the most looking at that site was the fact that DBZ Resurrection F was such a success. The session I went to was dead and if you ask me the movie was pretty god damn disappointing. And while I paid $18 to get into both of the screenings of Love Live I went to, I saw Resurrection F for free because I got a free ticket at SMASH earlier that month.

Well it helps when Dragonball is a mainstream series... so it has a much easier time bringing in prospective watchers. It also got a much wider release, with 61 screens in its opening weekend in Australia, with a max of 87 screens.

Your observations is correct though, as the encore week for LL, DBZ did slightly less than LL did at A$1,898 vs A$2,080. For the opening weekend for LL, DBZ did not even gross >A$103, which means it may have not been showing in that particular week, or it just did very badly?

Of course I understand that DBZ is super popular and all. And unlike Love Live Madman were able to get Resurrection F playing at a cinema within walking distance of my house. But in terms of scale it's basically just 'another DBZ movie'. Battle of Gods had the distinction of being this big nostalgia fueled comeback for DBZ but Resurrection F was just more of the same. Which is why I'm very glad I didn't have to go on a big trip to Sydney just to see it.

Personally I think the Love Live Movie is all around a much, much better made movie that left a much bigger impact on me. It doesn't surprise me that DBZ did much better, I'm just surprised that DBZ's ticket sales weren't let down by the film's actual quality. But as you pointed out this school holiday encore thing actually isn't selling many tickets. So maybe everyone's realised by now that the movie isn't really worth going Great Ape over.
