I feel like a solid two minutes could've been cut from this um piece of "art". As with most of Mr.Tanaami's body of work I only understood a small part of what he was trying to convey, if there was anything to convey at all. |

Well, I typed "Gundam" into the search bar and found a 1970s arthouse project haha. As for the short film itself, it critiques the pop culture of the United States of America of that era. The superheroes, the pop music, and the pornography, which was legalized around that time, I believe. The heavy focus on pornographic imagery was honestly strange and not knowing the author's political leanings, I can't comment more, as abstract art was made by people from across the spectrum, like the fascist Salvador Dali, the communist Picasso or the many artists adhering to the political orthodoxy of the western world (a.k.a. liberalism). |

Umm. Lovely. I swear watching these kind of shorts is ruining my taste in anime. Everything seems so average if it doesn't have flying phallic mushrooms. I think this was a commentary (and a rejection) of some things Tanaami considered American. There were some clever juxtapositions, like the torch of the Statue of Liberty replaced with bananas, mushrooms and some other phallic object. The bunny represented comic book heroes, and the Elvis cult was seen as a part of the same phenomenon. There was also "Mask Man" as a cartoon hero similarly leaping toward the viewer in an intrusive manner, wearing a gas mask as if he was actually just a soldier. So militarism was rejected as well. I think there was also a point about pop culture being unsubtle and intrusive since all these characters were leaping, driving or rushing toward the viewer repeatedly, in your face. The images of the masturbating woman with Elvis, Marlon Brando and other characters flashing in the background was probably about the sexual undertone of hero worship. Even when we often pretend otherwise, these celebrities are also treated as sex objects. With UFOs, Elvises and penises flying around the Empire State Building Tanaami was further elaborating on the obsession with sex which he probably sees to permeate the American culture. I don't really want to comment on whether it would be so, but I can imagine that from the viewpoint of a Japanese artist of his generation it's something to reject. It's quite a thought-provoking piece, and while the artist's method of criticism was as in your face as the things he criticized, or even more so, it was still interesting. |

I think I got something from this, it is a criticism of American culture as a whole, the superheroes, the music, the sexualization. Possibly the director was trying to tell that american women were all consumerist sluts and that men are faggots. That said, this was clearly made in the 70s, amid the Vietnam war, the image of US in general was not pretty much the best. Now subjectively. As a piece for enjoyment, it's about as enjoyable as Aki no Puzzle or drinking a glass of orange juice mixed with toothpaste. EDIT: Ah, the same director as Aki no Puzzle, I got it now. |

Out of all nationalistic forms of art, this one is definitely one of the weirdest I have ever seen. At least I interpret it as being radically anti-USA, because of USA's culture being different to the author's culture. The way it was presented, though, reminded me more of an angry brat's notebook notes done during a boring lesson in their middle school. Poor Elvis. He didn't deserve to be treated like this. |
