Finally some explanation as to why Ishikura killed Sayuri.
However, it was not what I expected at all.

I want to hear Asai's side of the story if he has one.

Before this chapter, my friend made an excellent point and I would like to share it. I wasn't exactly thinking about the narrative broadly, but the direction this has gone is exciting. My friend has suggested that by limiting both of these men's capabilities it essentially created a shounen fight. Instead of having two fighters both with a different power, one that has advantages and disadvantages compared to the other, Fukumoto and Kawaguchi created a scenario where by limiting both of these men in dramatically different ways they have to fight in that way too. It’s a fight to the death between blindness and a crippled leg. Asai tried to hide his blindness and Ishikura tested it out and made it worsen, Asai determined his legs are still an advantage and ran from Ishikura using the lodge’s layout to get away. Last chapter I thought to myself that Ishikura may as well turn off his light and crawl to get rid of the noise when he walks but reasoned that it would leave him blind and slow so it wouldn’t work. Well here he proved me wrong, he set up a diversion with two lanterns and crawled behind Asai to attempt and take out his legs by silent surprise. Now since that did not work, Ishikura did the next best thing, since he lacks speed he has barricaded one of the paths off so that the leg advantage is no longer as strong. This forces Asai in a Strongest Man Kurosawa-like situation where he must fight back in the deprived state he’s in. The shift of a dialogue on paranoia and a look into the human mind to a gritty and realistic shounen battle and a character study of these two has been super cool to witness.

I love the moment when Ishikura was coming behind Asai. We got that beautiful broad shot of the entire floor with clarity that Asai could not hope to have. And somehow there was no noise. Those moments of trying to figure out what was going on were frightening, and especially after the barricade with set up and we heard the steps and the light emerging from the stairs, that was excellent too.

I think when Ishikura was crawling was the best time to fight back. I understand why Asai didn’t, he couldn’t see, he couldn’t be precise at all, he could try and kick and get his legs cut and he could get his hand cut open if he even attempted to go for the knife. But having that mobility and height difference against Ishikura could have made all the difference. Now that he is cornered with what looks like a log to fight back with, things don’t look great.
