“It’s his fault… for listening...!” was the first line in the manga. Does it indicate Ishikura’s rationale for killing Asai? His fault for listening to the confession? I think it’s worthwhile to bring up again.

I want to mention yet again how much I like the art in this. To see the darkened face of Ishikura through Asai’s eyes is a great way to get us into his head space and show us how frightening it really is. Little choices like having darkness surround the room on page 166 are great too. I particularly loved the page of Asai realizing his vision had nearly completely gone out as Ishikura tested him. Being unable to tell what is happening with the distortion around his face set the tone well, and I love the use of what I think is the first double page spread. It made that confrontation feel important, it placed both in the same room in the same panel, it made them feel close. It was dynamic.

As for the actual chapter, it started with me laughing at how Asai was squinting out of the window but turned to Ishikura to give him a smile. A charming way of saying nothing wrong is occurring right now. But it led to something incredibly scary, despite Ishikura struggling to walk, with Asai going blind it even puts him at a disadvantage, it evens the playing field. Paranoia, mountain sickness, and sleep deprivation, not a good combo. Speaking of the mountain sickness explanation, it was so Kaiji. “But it can’t be..”, the omniscient narrator comes in to clarify, “but it can”! Good stuff.

But yeah this got serious, it outlines the relationship between both of these men and how they are much more than friendly college acquaintances. Instead the relationship is like the one from the film Akira. We saw in chapter 1 that Ishikura felt had nothing whereas Asai had things waiting for him at home. I would say Ishikura is not the conventionally attractive one here, he also talked about not having any woman. He feels as though he's been in Asai’s shadow as Asai helped him for his own selfish ego. But I don't think that's exactly accurate, if we go back to my confusion over Asai’s simple acceptance of the murder confession and his personal thoughts about never telling anyone about this I think we can see them in another light. I especially felt in chapter 1 that Asai was caring for Ishikura, genuinely. This also conflicts with his thought to be dying words about Asai being his only friend and being glad that he was the one to hear the truth. He was smiling like a baby when Asai forgave him…

I do think Ishikura’s tears signify that he wishes Asai did open up to him. And I think the fact that we didn’t even hear the justifications of their friendship may show that Asai can be vapid in his niceness. This feels complicated, lots of complicated feelings, from the seemingly contradictory moments, from Asai who appears to have shallow niceness to him and a lack of opening up, and due to a Ishikura who seems to want to kill Asai out of spite but also be better friends.

It's not looking good for Asai.
