That ending is absolutely memorable. A world of possibilities opens up for everyone. I can really recommend the sequel by the way. It's very, very different (it was made 10 years later!) and the first 2 episodes one feels that it has nothing to do with this one, but trust me it does. Check it out.

This anime is a pretty good representation on why mecha anime is usually a snooze-fest to me.

Overall:
A rather cheerful escape/chase, in an exotic world at war.
Good SF concept, appealing variety in cultures/countries/designs, more faithful to Mikimoto's art than MacrossTV.
But there are too many scenes recycling and it's a bit too long for what it does and tell.
Most characters are simple, some are cool.

Score: 6/10

Was a pretty solid sci-fi adventure story, but somehow as it got towards the end (like around when they start negotiating with Chiram) the episodes started feeling more loosely connected and it was getting a little boring. Kei and Mimsy could be pretty insufferable too.

It had a lot of personality though, a very unique feeling.

Despite some "flaws"(which added some charm in a way), I actually ended up liking the series as a whole. The last couple of episodes kinda salvaged this bumpy adventure, even tho everything was wrapped up a bit too fast imo.

So sad for Mome. She is the best character.

Wow I'm very, very surprised at how good this ended up being. I feel like not being part of the Robotech group and never having took off like Macross in Japan cursed this series to an obscurity that I truly feel it doesn't deserve. History hasn't been fair to Orguss.

The characters were great to me, the mix of so many different cultures and different ways of thinking and understanding was the gem of the series and I really loved the machine designs. It truly is a shame that so many action scenes reuse frames and movements so much throughout the entire series.

I felt genuinely bad for Mome and the Lieutenant. They all served their friends to the very end. It's a shame the Chiram scheme doesn't go anywhere. They were really planning on betraying the Emarn and that sadly doesn't go anywhere.

From the ending I understand that somehow they end up fixing the world and the surviving characters end up living happy lives... except Manisha whose husband apparently dumps her for Shaia. It was cute seeing Kei and Mimsy with their baby.

It's an 8/10 for me despite the flaws.

I found the ending lackluster. Too open ended for me. Was gonna rate it 9/10, but decided on 8/10. Very frustrated at the somewhat unsatisfying ending

so what the hell ended up happening, they gave us a random montage of the characters living happily but is that it? how did they fix the world if they could only chose between emarn and chiram.
decent anime but not the best from its era

I can't believe that's how it ended?! I liked it and I mostly understood what happened but damn it was over so quickly.

Overall I quite enjoyed this show, it had a strong cast and a very interesting plot. It does have a lull in the middle but then nearly all 80s mecha shows do.

Still far superior to Tomino's output from the time so 8/10 from me.

Not a bad show at all. Fun characters, great visuals. Didn't have the lightning in a bottle brilliance of Macross, but it was a good b-side to that estimable show. Not top-shelf but I enjoyed my time with it.

Damn. That is a legendary "burial" for Moom. I think the most impactful and useful of the side characters. o7

My initial reaction to that ending is that the future Kei and Olson were successful in their showdown against their past selves but it seems that everyone got to live out their lives (even reuniting with Moom? It'll be difficult since her battery isn't replaceable and it will run out again), so it doesn't quite make sense when Kei is shown with Tina if that past Kei lost that duel.

If we look at all of the future sequences:

  1. Kei and Mimsy (she doesn't have her antennae though?)
  2. Mimsy, Jayviet, and the newborn
  3. Athena and Olson
  4. Kei and Tina
  5. Kei and Moom
  6. Shaia and Manisha's husband whose name I can't remember because they mentioned like once
  7. Kei, Mimsy, and their newborn (Kei has (one) antenna! Male Emarns all have one, right?)

My thoughts are that each scenario is some parallel universe that all exist at the same "time" as others since they did mention the existence of all those other timelines when the Emarns(?) were briefing Kei and others:

  1. I think the Mimsy's lack of antennae is intentional despite a lot of recycled scenes and animation errors piling up as the series got closer to the finale. A universe where Emarns don't exist and Kei and Mimsy still met naturally (The opposite of #7)
  2. This could be a timeline where Kei doesn't come back (or he's simply omitted), if he's omitted, we'll call this the "main timeline" that we've been watching the entire series
  3. The same "main timeline" where Kei and Olson come back
  4. Original timeline Kei gets to live out his life with Tina after the dimensional-time bomb goes off but does not transport Kei and Olson to a different time
  5. Possibly a reflection of the past of the main timeline where Kei and Moom exist at the same time
  6. Alternate timeline where Shaia is with that dude (but does that mean she took on responsibilities back in Emarn instead of commanding the Groma?)
  7. Another timeline where Chirams became Emarns and they met naturally. (The opposite of #1)

If that was a sequence of happy endings of the characters in alternate universes, they sure did Jayviet, Sley, Papty's husband (maybe even Robert and Henry) dirty.

The foiled Chiram plot was thrown away like papers in the wind. Built very little tension in my opinion.

It's also a bonus when the opening and ending themes are direct tie-ins to the plot of the show and not just "some songs". The opening, well, I hope that's clear enough. The ending, a band of nomadic people (living beings, I guess? Not sure how you classify Moom and Lieutenant - operating beings?) from all walks of life uniting for an endless journey.

Overall, I'm very pleased with this show. It exceeded my expectations, especially when I first started it; I thought it was just going to be some hot-headed womanizer that conquers the strange world he's transported to.

...he still is a hot-headed womanizer, but the weight of the world causes him to reflect on that and become a family man.
