A lot of pressure on Mao...

It's a reunion after 10 years and she's got important choices. Still, I think she should be honest about herself and do what she thinks is best.

So they spend time together, but the mother doesn't feel the need to apologize for leaving and not contacting her in 10 years nor does she explain why she suddenly comes back now. Just because she is alone is no reason because she was "alone" for the last 10 years then. I bet it's something like what happens in Toradora with Taiga's father.. she was probably dumped by her boyfriend or something like that. And if Mao really decides to go back to her real mother, I could imagine her getting a new (or the old one) boyfriend just after Mao moves in, making Mao feel out of place again, so that she has to leave.

I really hope she decides to stay with her new family now after all the trouble she's gone through to get there. Her stepmom is much nicer than her real mom anyway and how heartbroken would her new sister be? :/

Yeah, and I think she should communicate with Hiro about what's happening and her thoughts on the whole situation. It might take a lot of the weight off of her shoulders if she confided in someone.

I agree, I hope she stays with her father, stepmother, and her stepsister. If she went to live with her mother so she wouldn't be alone then she would probably lose all of that trust she's worked so hard to earn from her father. In his eyes she would just be leaving him for another person and "betraying" him again, maybe. I also think what her mother is asking of is kind of unreasonable since she left them and after 10 years she decides to come back and expects Mao to trust her enough to maybe want to move in with her and start a whole new life with a new school, leaving her friends she's made.

If she could live with her father while still having a relationship with her mother and visit her occasionally so she wouldn't be alone (if the mother is telling the truth), I'd want that for Mao. It's ultimately Mao's own decision to make in the end, so I really just want Mao to be happy of course.

Mao's mother returns after 10 years and she suddenly asks her to stay with her. It is sad to see that Mao's mother is lonely by herself but Mao is satisfied with the way things are right now, having made up with her father and being really close with Hiro and Daiki. It must be very confusing for Mao. Mao should tell Hiro about what she's going through though. Hiro's just worried sick. These things happen in relationships. I just hope Hiro does end up helping Mao. I don't want to see Mao this confused and bottling up all her emotions to herself again. D:

I won't outright condemn Mao's mom for leaving her family, but I do think that before talks of living together, changing schools, etc, she needs to properly reconcile with her family. If what she says is true about living alone for those 10 years, then she could have been in the same position as Mao's dad and wasn't really sure how to reconcile with her family, and instead of giving Mao the cold shoulder like her dad, she's instead overcompensating.
Matsuoka Yoshitsugu has hardly any range as a voice actor, and is grossly over-cast.

Yeah. I said it.

Mao's inability to think things clearly is really dragging things out, but the story has been left in an interesting place.

The mother seems surprised Mao's dad got remarried... is she serious? It's been 10 years, how conceited is her character that she believes Mao's father will remain single for her after all this time when she cheated on him.

Oh, and I'll giver her some credit for at least coming back after all this time and at least attempting to reconnect, but in my eyes, she's just trash.

She's a good example of people not realizing what they had until it's gone. Remember those flashbacks of Mao's childhood? Not once did we ever see her being a mother, instead she would leave Mao at home by herself not even bothering to feed her and bring other men home. Also after leaving, she didn't even bother contacting her daughter once for 10 years, especially when Mao was at the age when a mother was important to have around.

So I don't care how much Mao's mother has think she has changed or how much more mature she has gotten, she still has ways to go. Since she hasn't even bother apologizing yet...

Come on, even her mother felt lonely, as she had the courage to come back and ask for such a thing to the daughter she abandoned it. To me, it sounded more like blackmail to convince Mao. And still was surprised when she discovered that the ex-husband had married again! She expected what? Everyone was stagnant their lives and wait for her? Crap, I hate this woman.

Mao's mother is hard to like, and hard to believe. I do believe her "relationship" with the ass she left her husband for ended almost immediately, but that doesn't explain why she never tried to contact her daughter over the past 10 years, unless she was forbidden to do so by the terms of the divorce, in which case, she is probably still in violation, as Mao is still underage.

I really want Mao to get her head screwed on straight and talk to Hiro about this. It burns so bad that she put off his "real" confession for that woman and is now avoiding him. Why on earth should her mother coming back change anything about their love for each other or make her not want to hear Hiro's confession? She is an idiot for reacting this way, in regards to Hiro... I don't blame her for being confused by the situation, but that is no reason to avoid the man she loves and who loves her.

This ^ Also, if she is alone now, its because off her choices, reflect about all the suffering you caused.

Okay, so my ideal situation is that Sugimoto reads the latest chapter, gets what's going on, calls Hiro and tells him that Mao is Kuukai and that he needs to read her latest chapter. That would be ideal, but it probably isn't going to play out that way.

Nice interpretation, i guess that too :D.

Well, when everything tend to be alright again with her dad. Somehow her mom came into her life again, with "lonely" things at hand that absolutely stir Mao's feeling so much since she also going throught it at the past.

"Actually, your father had doubts as to whether or not you were truly his child. I've been worried about that all this time." - don't poison the well, snake. Traitor.

"I'm sorry, Mao!" - no, you're not. That was calculated.

"I actually came here to see you, Mao. I even brought you a present" - GTFO woman. You don't get to come waltzing back like you did nothing wrong. Don't try to bait Mao away.

"I split up with him right after I left you, and I've been alone ever since" - don't play the victim card woman. You betrayed your husband and abandoned your daughter for cheap thrills rather than talking to your husband about your issue with him, proving yourself a traitor. It's only natural your new boyfriend wouldn't trust you to remain loyal to him.

"Will you come and live with me?" - fuck off woman

"I can't tell Hiro." - ofcourse you should tell him. If you're going to marry him, you can trust him with anything. He'd tell you to kick that lady away.

I actually like Japanese media's tendency to promote forgiveness, but in this case I am going to be very upset if they just forgive her and allow her to waltz back like nothing ever happened. No lady, it's over. You've lost your right as a wife and a mother. Bugger off.

"I truly believe that she's a selfish person, but that person is my mother. And she's all alone. And I know exactly what that feels like" - NO, NO, NO, NO

Mao, cut off this woman. Stop meeting her. You do realize what's going to happen when she bumps into the rest of your family, right? Acrimony. It ain't going to be pretty. Shut this down Mao.

"I could afford to send you to a way nicer high school. And college!" - there she goes again, trying to bait Mao away. How can you not see this for what it is, Mao?

"Yes. To my lonely house." - stop playing victim card lady.

"Give me a little bit of time to think about living with you Mom." - WTF why are you even considering this Mao? You've spent the entire manga wanting to go back to a restored home. Now you have that! Urrrgh, this is really feeling like an artificially contrived conflict for last minute drama. The Mao we know would've never entertained this idea, not for a second.

"I can't just leave her behind" - yes, you can. You hold absolutely no obligation towards her. She dug this pit herself. Helping her will only make you worse off. She had TEN YEARS to find a new family for herself, and yet actively choose to stew in her own misery. She choose this.

"I know better than anyone just how much a helping hand can save you." - oh goodness gracious, are we seriously doing this? Dude, we were so close to a good ending here! It was such as good manga up until this point. Endings are important because fInal impressions stick with you, and THIS is what we're going to end with!?!?

This really feels tacked on. The drama only works because Mao is acting uncharacteristically OOC. If she was acting IC, she would've gone straight home.

Mao should definitely stay with her father, her stepmother, and her stepsister. Whatever the facts of the boyfriend and the living alone, the undoubted fact is that after ten years of abandoning Mao, her attitude is quite carefree. She doesn't know what sort of pain and loneliness Mao went through, and only cares about herself. Even in this situation. Her dad might've been pretty mean to her because of his own issues, but in his own way he was STILL taking care of Mao. He knew that Hiro would take care of Mao well, and he kept paying.

I hope Mao speaks with Hiro soon. Mao has no obligation to abandon everything she's worked so hard for the sake of a mother who abandoned her and doesn't even have the attitude to properly apologise and regret what she's done.

Damn it... this chapter is leaving me teary-eyed. I understand Mao's feelings all too well, or at least I think so. It's not guilt, not obligation, and not a lack of clear thinking that's leaving Mao so broken. It's sympathy and love. She understands her mom's loneliness, and despite all that's happened in the last 10 years, despite being abandoned, she still nurtures intense love for her mom. And yes, you can point to all sorts of reasons why Mao might feel this way - that she's been desperately lonely, that her yearning for her parents is far stronger than any capacity she has for condemnation, or that her trauma induced unreasonable hopes about their family being whole again. And while all of these might be factors to why Mao reacted the way she did, they're not the heart of the matter, and they're definitely not the points that should be dwelled on.

To start, I don't think it's wrong for Mao to feel the way she does. She simply loves her parents and harbors a deep understanding and sympathy of them, which if anything makes me admire her all the more. She's a genuinely loving and loyal person, and so as she grew up, her longing for her mom never left. And so when, for the first time in 10 years, Mao's mom returns out of a desire to be with her, of course Mao is confused and heartbroken. She truly appreciates her mom coming back, but she feels so sad that she's forced to choose between her two parents all over again. It looks like one of the two will get hurt no matter what she chooses.

Also, be careful not to mistake Mao's love toward her mother for obligation; her feelings runs much deeper and farther than that. Mao truly loves her mom. Keep in mind that Mao's dad made the same mistake of misjudging his daughter's feelings - he thought Mao hated him and was only returning to the household out of a sense of duty, but he couldn't be more ignorant. The truth of the matter is that Mao loved and continues to love both her parents, despite having been torn from them at a young age.

And now Mao faces a dilemma. In her head she knows she can't ruin the progress she's made with her dad's family, but considering that means sentencing her mom to a life of desolation and heartache - whose only chance at rescue is during her small window of staying in Mao's city - I cannot blame Mao at all for prolonging her decision. Also, she wants to spend time with the mom she's missed all these years.

You know, I don't believe that Mao's mother is irredeemable. In fact I think it's wrong to believe that anyone is irredeemable, and to get rid of your attachment to a loved one just because they hurt you long ago. Any relationship can be healed. I feel this is a major theme of the manga. Why? Because if it weren't for Mao's continuous efforts toward restoring relations with her dad - fueled by her steadfast love - she never would have healed the gaping hole in her heart. And naturally, this means we have to forgive her dad and mom. But forgiveness doesn't mean that the past has been erased. No, it's still there, and it always will be. Rather, it means that the best way of living is to move forward and release the shackles of the past, in order to experience true, unrestrained love in the present. Mao lives by this philosophy, and so does her dad, at least after he'd realized how much he needed to change. And now, at long last, Mao's mom too has decided to strive for reconciliation. It doesn't matter that this is merely one last try before she gives up on Mao. What matters is that she visited out of love. Even her giving up on Mao had she refused is a form of love; it's out of consideration for how Mao would have clearly moved on from her. And really, no matter the mom's motivation, it's clear to me that reaching out to her daughter and being honest with her feelings is the right thing to do. Although this is partly because I wholeheartedly trust Mao's ability to remain loyal to everything she's worked for. Knowing Mao, she will make the best decision for herself. She has one of the purest sensibilities I've read in a shoujo manga, and on top of that she's such a strong person; she never stops working toward what she feels is right, even if she has to do it alone.

Honestly... this feels like the final hurdle Mao's journey. She has confronted her past little by little, and this seems to be the last step. I sincerely hope Mao and her mother will learn to feel like family again. Yet at the same time, I hope no one else gets hurt in the process. And while it is sometimes inevitable that someone wounds up hurt, I can at least find solace in the fact that Mao surely won't give up fighting for those she loves - not until the very end.

dont usually harp on flags But every line of hers was red flag galore laced with motives hidden .Only way author could have succeeded in dampening the sacrilege she committed was showing the blonde dude having some chips over her shoulder .Instead girl was annoyed over why she placed last at the end than have any shred of remorse after what ,10 long years enough time to introspect !!.She didnt want reconcilation ,she wanted her void filled up ,taking in or in correct term wiping the happiness of the people who once was close to her ,AGAIN.I highely doubt she has any shred of motherly affection for Mao .She has shown none here rather the reverse is true.
Divorce ? Her marriage should have been annulled. She faked it from day 1.There's no surety whether Mao is actually theirs.Hurts to say considering Mao turning out to be a fine young lady.
Don't blame Mao though for being vulnerable .No stepmom can fill the void a mom has left behind. It is special .It is for hers to decide her course of action though she would risk breaking the bond with her father permanently.
