I don't really know what to think about this manga. Like someone said in a review "this isn't really a manga you enjoy but rather one that makes you think". And tough I find some parts really interesting, I find others far too disgusting to make me say this is an awesome masterpiece (or something like that). So I can't really rate this one but I can ask you people: What are your interpretation? I'm not sure if there is a right answer out there actually so don't be afraid if you have an unusual perspective. I myself just finished it and I haven't figured out anything about the end yet... What was up with those butterflies? O.o

well after one read I was petty clueless about anything thats happened there, After that I read it 2 more time and I kind of figure it all out. at first I though it was one of those seinen\ philosophy mangas that are just trying to much to be mysteries, but after I read it again I was amazed. this manga have so much more then ppl usually think its truly a masterpiece which I can assure you that no human on earth can understand without reading it 2 or 3 times(or even a 100). everything connect perfectly everything that happened had a meaning EVERYTHING. I'm amazed that a human being could come up with such a story.

It's been a while since I read it and I got most of it, but the parts I didnt I just attributed to a subpar scanalation. Translation is serious business.

thanks for your replies. I recently reread it two times me too and that was why I remembered to check this thread. Now I get it better than before. It's still very far out and philosophical but I've realized that I could NEVER have expected to understand this manga in my first read. I'm not that observant. The trick to reading this is never underestimate anything that happens, everything is connected. And that's the beauty of it! It's not just about how the story progress, it's about understanding how everything is connected. And No Scene is irrelevant. Everything has to do with something else and slowly you see the big picture. It's beautiful. This manga is a true masterpiece.

For the most time I did't get this manga...or it's more like I didn't even understand what I was supposed to understand from it. I would have normally dropped it, but because of this topic and the positive reviews I kept reading it.

Well, in the end it did make sense. I guess I should re-read it in order to fully understand it, because, even though I can see the big picture, there are some details that I missed.

Because of their metamorphose they are believed to be messengers of the death in many cultures. Butterflies are either symbols for ghosts/dead people themselves (not only in japan but even in greek antiquity they were seen as the souls that god freed from death, the chrysalis "νεκύδαλλο" can be translated by "shell of the soul") or carrier, that come to pick up the souls, when someone died.

They actually appear in quite every japanese story that deals with death.

Anyhow, it was a good story, but I somehow didn't liked the art very much.

It's weird...even though I was a bit confused with what was going on, but as I soon as I reached the end of the manga I was left somewhat numb.

I just finished it for the first time.. did not understand half of it. I had a very hard time telling what was the past and what was the present, and which characters were which and how they connected with the others.

Exactly how I feel right now - the only exception is that I'm not done with it yet but I'm having a headache because I'm that kind of person that wants to figure out everything (by the first reading) @_@

Im glad i understood most of it in the first read, the only thing i didn't understand was the thing with susuki and the old man at the end/start.

did they even say that suzuki name was amahiko? would've been easier to understand that part if they did.

You are wrong here, sorry. Real masterpieces, very valuable artistic works can be very disturbing.

I've sort of changed my perspective on this manga since I first started this thread. Now I have no problem with the disturbing parts (guess these few years have desensitized me). The more I think about this manga, the more I like it. Maybe I'm just a pretentious asshole but I keep coming back to nijigahara holograph. I think it's about how everything is connected in ways that are beyond our ability to see. The manga delivers that point in the way it's structured. (It has very little story progression but a lot of "connections" everywhere, both causally and thematically). I also think it's about how humans (or perhaps "humanity") are bound to repeat the same mistakes and sins over and over again. The manga shows that through it's paradoxical chronology. (It doesn't end, it's eternal) And I think it's about how somehow we are our own worst enemy. I think the manga delivers that point through many/most of the characters.

Still: It's not my favorite Asano Inio manga. I think Solanin and What a Wonderful World, though less complex, are more profound.

This manga was 2deep4me. I still enjoyed it for its complex storytelling, but sadly, I don't think I fully understood it. Would have to re-read it at some point to get the full picture.

So the ending can be seen as the author offering a small glimpse of hope, that though man may be somewhat doomed to repeat the same mistakes, you alone may chose your own destiny.

Doesn't seem like there's a full explanation here, unfortunately to breakdown every character and plot or what all of the secrets are.
Although, learning from post #4 that that was his mother and that the boy was his future self father, while the girl was his mom and sister or whatever... damn, wtf.
