Well that was an interesting short.

For some reason, I liked the song that they were singing.

Yeah I love this short. It's soooo cute and all the motion is incredibly well-animated. Watch that spider go!

What propaganda are you talking about ?
It's one of the few pieces of animation from the war that didn't seem to have any propaganda message at all.

People say it alludes to WW2 since it was made during that time.
It also displays the Japanese views of Westerners (black (african american) spiders with minstrel hats and use of the lasso, etc).

This film was considered a true masterpiece and was a major inspiration for so many creators such as the god father of Japanese manga and anime Osama tezuka and Legends, Ishinamori and Leiji Matsumuto. The two boys that sat in a theater watching this would go on to become seminal figures in the postwar revivial of Japanese comics and anime. They carried with them seeds of the craft and artistry that proceeded the war, transmitted through this film as well as Mamatato Sacred Sailors.

Kenzo Masaoka and Mitsuyo SEO took on students who became the founding leaders of Nihon Doga, the starting point of post war animation that was later known as TOIE animation and Studio Ghibli.

This special short created by such legends that spear headed the evolution of anime can not be understated just how influential these pieces of historical media are in the industry.

Wonder if the spider is dead or not?

Overall that was enjoyable a lot, and I loved the lady bug's singing. 7/10.

The songs sung by both the spider and the ladybug were nice and enjoyable, it made me really interested in the story of this animation.

While it was a pretty cute short and it really made for children to understand not to go and hang around weird men at night and come home on time. I stil think the kinda anti black people propaganda going on at the time is stil pretty despicable. for the rest really fun to check out a very old animation work though

There really is no proof of it being a propaganda. Yes, we can speculate but we shouldn't take it as face value.

I'm surprised the Japanese were even making animation in 1943. But, the idea that its racial propaganda is a bit of a stretch, to me. I'm pretty sure that the average Japanese person in 1943 had other things to worry about, than black Americans, and even today, Japanese understanding of Western racial stereotypes is pretty limited.

I think this just like the Mr Popo drama from DBZ, or re-colouring Jynx in Pokemon, where Westerners are imposing their own perspective on characters that came from a completely different context.

The song at the beginning is cancer. The stereotypes are also very problematic. Nice animation during the rain sequence though.
