I would actually be happy if Ushio came back. I don't see how this is going to have a happy ending otherwise and it would suck if a great show like this had a sad ending
Someone please tell me what is gained by Ushio dying? We did this already. Nagisa becomes Tomoya's everything, Nagisa dies, Tomoya questions whether they ever should have met, deep depression, reunited with Ushio, Tomoya has a reason to live again. See, we don't need to do this again with Ushio. Nothing's going to be gained from it.
Oh and the death scene, or "the poor man's "Goal!" What a travesty. I lost track of how much cliched death talk bubbled forth out of Ushio's mouth. "Are we on the train?" Good god, I never thought I'd see the day when Key got desperate to make its audience cry. That was just pathetic. Also, Tomoya's a fucking idiot for thinking it was okay to bring Ushio out there, regardless of it being "his only daughter's wish".
So with this, I can conclude Key hates girls. All of them. All girls must suffer crippling anguish at their hands, no matter how cute or endearing they may be, they're all destined to an unspeakable tragedy. Thank you, Clannad After. I'm completely disillusioned now to your idea of moe. Thank you for smashing everything the last 10 episodes worked to build with little regard to the message of the story so far.
This is the perfect example of a shit end. There's no way 22 can make up for all of this.

Honestly, to each and every person who says something like this, quit being so pessimistic. You haven't even seen the damned episode yet, don't just assume they can't make a good ending. There's a whole 25 minutes of time they could do any number of wondrous things with, wait until Saturday to be so judgmental.
Or you can let them be pessimistic and let them view it in their own way. That episode did set things up for a not so great ending. Maybe it'll be good maybe it won't but to each their own when they critique something like that.
what is the meaning of everything! It's 21 - second to last ending!! and they still hadn't explained the vast plane, the doll, the mysterious illness, the light orbs...
Cmon, season 3! haha
I would like to see Ushio survive, but then again it could turn out like Nagisa ;_;
and yea, the double/triple/___ posting is a glitch
my previous post i hit "post message" once but it came out twice

i dont know if i've ever wanted to cry so much from 1 single anime.. sunflower scene got me and nagisa's death now ushio................ but mostly the sunflower scene. i couldnt bear it. WTFFFFFFFFFFFF if tomoya did get that light of happiness that ushio saw doesnt that mean he can make a wish for ushio? if it comes from the deepest desires of his heart? cuz it did land in his chest and there was also the snowflake that melted in his heart. foreshadow? also if "deep connections" thing about the alternate worlds theory is true, doesnt it have to do with the wishes that tomoya and akki made?

you should play the game
That's the only problem I have if they try a supernatural type ending. For those that haven't played the game have no clue as to what orbs, doll, and girl vice versa. They only briefly mentioned it once I believe about an alternate world. To throw all that in one episode is a shame, if they go that way....
It is mentioned briefly about 4 or 5 times through season 1 into 2, explained a little more in depth in season 2 (by Misae and Yukine), and then the illusionary world is explained a bit (theory wise) by Kotomi in the first half of ep 16.
Everything about the Illusionary World will be explained in chapter 22.
This is what happens in the game (spoilers obviously):
A world, surface of white.
........
Snow...
Yes, snow.
Continuing to fall down even now, it covers my body in white.
Ahhh... What am i doing in such a world...?
Since when have i been alone in this place...?
........
Buried in snow... was my hand.
That hand, it was holding something.
I pull it up.
A hand of pure white.
It was a girl's hand.
Ahhh... thats's right... I was not alone.
I brushed off the snow covering her face. Her figure which slept quietly, surfaced.
We were always together... In this world. In this sad, lonely world.
And together... we had walked thus far.
To get out of this world.
Ever since that day.
Always walking... With her always pushing her weakended body onward... Walking and walking... By now, we've gotten to where we can no longer return... Even though the snow is piling around her legs... Even though the snow is burying my body... We encourage each other on... Eyes fixed straight ahead... we continue walking... And then we both... Lost our strength.
She could no longer move another step.
The girl holds on even tighter to my worn out body.
The snow is beginning to cover half of her body. Even with my small body, she could no longer carry me.
I touch her cheek with my hand.
I thought it would be warm, or was it just my memory... Same as my hand... it should be really cold right now.
If only i knew this would happen, I wouldn't have taken her here... I'm only hurting her more by doing this... Isn't there any place we can go to anymore...? Are we going to sleep here forever...? In this ending world.
Girl: "...hey..."
A voice in the snow storm.
It was her voice.
But her eyes remained closed.
Girl: "...are you...there...?
Doll: (Certainly, I will always be by your side.)
Girl: "... Thank you...
Doll: (Eh...?)
Girl: "...I can finally hear your voice."
Doll: (How come?)
Girl: "... I won't be a person for much longer... that's why i can hear your mind."
Doll: (What do you mean?)
Girl: "... there were a lot of things i came to understand... and a lot of things I didn't know."
Doll: (Is that so...)
Girl: "But, i can talk with you now because of this."
Doll: (We can talk a lot.)
Girl: "...yes... however, we're running out of time... I want you to hear me out... will you listen?"
Doll: (Of course...)
Girl: "...I, too... used to be from a far away world... in the same world you were once in."
Doll: (Really?)
Girl: "...yes..."
Doll: (Then, you shouldn't be in this world... Let's go back.)
Girl: "...I'm sorry, I... I can't leave this place..."
Doll: (How come?)
Girl: " ...because I'm... I'm this world...
Doll: (........)
Girl: "...I won't be able to move anymore if it stays like this... I'll lose my human form... and then, I'll become this world's consciousness...
Doll: (........)
Girl: "...that's why, I can't leave this place..."
Doll: (Who decided... something like that...)
Girl: "...I did... this is, my decision... from the very beginning, since I was the first to be born here... that's why, I chose to become this world's consciousness rather than die..."
Doll: (I don't get it... what are you talking about? But we promised... that we'd leave this world together)
Girl: "...yes... but at that time, I didn't know anything... I'm sorry... I came to understand a lot of things now... since I'm already connected to this world... that's why I can talk with you even though my body can't move..."
Doll: (Isn't it painful?)
Girl: "...yes, but it's okay now... so please, listen to me..."
Doll: (Okay... I'm listening...)
Girl: "...If i disappear from here, this world will cease to exist... if that happens, many of light will be unhappy..."
Doll: (Light?)
Girl: "...you know, you were also one of those lights...
Doll: (I was?)
Girl: "...yes. They are the feelings of the people from the other world..."
Doll: (The other world?)
Girl: "... the farthest away, yet the closest... we've always been together, and we've always been there... in the same place... it's just that, only we look different... since this place isn't the human world..."
Doll: (But you're human...)
Girl: "...no... I began to change into something that's not human... ever since i came here. This is what... this world is."
Doll: (This world? Then, what is this world really?)
Girl: "...even I don't know that myself... but you might have an idea... since you exist in two worlds... but both the lights and i live in different worlds, so we never knew about each other's existence... but, you're the only one who noticed me... you never went anywhere and you were always watching me... that's why, i created a body for you... to reside in... crossing the rift between worlds, making our encounters possible... as the last person witha a mind... I managed to spend my time without getting lonely."
Doll: (........)
Girl: "...it's all thanks to you... that alone for me is enough... enough to be happy..."
Doll: (........)
Girl: "...that's why this time, I want you to save someone else..."
Doll: (........)
Girl: "...okay?... now, you must close your consciousness away from this world... if you do that, you'll be able to leave this place... you'll wake up on that important day... in that world... where lots of things began... this place, existed that day... that world is a place which you would reach after a long and exhausting journey... but you won't be able to carry any single memories of you being here... that's why, everything may happen with the same result all over again... but, if there's a person that you want to save... search for the light of the other world..."
Doll: (Light...?)
Girl: "...yes, light... the emotions of people in the other world manifest themselves as light here... from the other world, you should see my feeling as a form of light there... my feelings are, the world's feelings... the happiness I wish for all these lights... my feelings... if a precious person is unhappy... I want you to save that person..."
Doll: (No... I only want to save you...)
Girl: "...it's okay. I'm..."
Doll: (I can't just leave you behind... because this world is... so lonely... this is such a cold... and freezing place... If i disappear, you'll be alone again... In this apocalyptic world... Always alone...)
Girl: "...since that is what i wished for... I will watch over you... from now, always... and for all eternity..."
Doll: (No....... I don't want that........ )
In the midst of the blowing wind, I heard a sound. It was something I remembered from the other world. A memory of a distant season of spring. It was a quiet, yet calm and pleasant song. In that short time... There was a song sang by a small family.
The girl's mouth opened a little bit. And then, she sung that song.
Girl: "...dango...dango..."
A song she always heard over and over again in her young life.
I sung it too.
We sang together.
We kept on singing.
She smiles.
I smile too.
It'd be nice... It'd be nice if we could stay like this forever.
The strong wind continues to blow us down.
My body was... in pieces. In all that, I searched for her hand.
after losing my comments about this episode due to the server crash, i will try to resurrect my old post:
i dont think ushio died in this episode, because all we saw is that she lost consciousness.
well, that "papa... daisuki" gave me the final blow, i was deeply depressed for the rest of the day. damn this show is like a roller coaster of emotions..........
this show is on the same level of making me suffer, like Air did.
no wonder both are made from the same coldhearted companies... >_>"

QFT. Oh man, I finished this ep last night and I'm still all depressed about it. Hurry up, SS Eclipse Subs for #22
Well this episode could very well be a sad ending for this Tomoya's long and painful journey. The episode was amazing, I kinda predicted what would happen when Tomoya took Ushio out... "Do you like snow, daddy?" *tears*
Nagisa's death didn't even make me tear up so you can imagine what Ushio's death did - nothing =/ That said, Clannad did a nice job trying to make me cry. Even Air made me tear up a bit.
It was sad...but not as sad as when Nagisa died. Me thinks it's because it was so sudden with some quick foreshadowing. Come to think of it...it kinda felt like the end of Air.
Wow, just when I thought it couldn't be any more sad after Nagisa died and then this happens. I dunno what Tomoya did to deserve all of this... just wow.
Jeez, how much abuse can one man take? He feels attached to a certain individual and they end up dying in front of his eyes.
I really did not expect her to die, I thought she'd be the one to bring happiness into his life, but God damn was I wrong. Why did she have to be so stubborn about that trip?
This episode made me cry......big time. When they steped out of the door, i was like "no.no.no.no!" and then i cried when she died and Tomoyas eyes went O.O
Oh the pain was greatest when we realized Ushio was also going to die. It's like Tomoya suffered so much, and made so much progress, only to have it all lost. Ouch.
Hm that scene when Ushio and Tomoya walked together in the snow kinda reminded me of the scene at the beginning, where the girl and her doll walk together in the snow ^^
That happens in 1 time, but in different world .
But,it was changed when the girl in illusionary world told to the garbage doll that she will not be in there again .
aero said: NOOOOO, freaking.....Nagisa, Ushio...
But more importantly, poor Tomoya.
I know, I was thinking that the man suffered so much, death might have been the ultimate gift to him. So tragic.
usasoldiern said: Ushio died.. I couldn't believe it. It's like fate is just taking a crap on Tomoya. Everytime he achieves happiness, that person dies. Man..
I kno rite. What ill fate.
brinan said: Wonder how many more people are going to die that mean something to Tomoya =/
A lot. Tomoya just has a rotten life.
Raven_Ichigami said: Poor Tomoya .
I never imagined if his life could be happened in true life .
I mean, someone in this world has the same life like Tomoya .

Greetings, Fair Gentles! This is my first post and I am honored to have found such a great group who care about the Important Things - like good anime.
And after seeing Air first, the Clannad (2006), and Kanon, I feel that Key is a very important studio that is doing amazing and original work. And to start off with erotic games with stories so strong they get made into great "mainstream" anime is an amazing thing.
Now, I did have a bit of dread about this After Story, I mean I cried like a baby so many time during Clannad and the movie and it was clear after the first few episodes that I would have to witness the death of sweet Nagisa again. And that brings us to this episode.
Tomoya kills Ushio with his neglect. That is what I go from this.
This was not sad....it-makes-me-MAD! I mean, I am about to explode Neo-Tokyo or turn into a thousand Hulks ANGER!
First, a doctor comes to your house and says your daughter is sick and gonna die, you do not accept and hang your head - nnnoooooooooooo.
Maybe it is just the deep cultural differences but Tomoya should shaking the pillars of Hell or storm the Gates of Heaven or at least go to that shiny new hospital and DEMAND that they do everything humanly possible to save Ushio.
Where is that Japanese fighting spirit? MAKENAI!
And finally, he takes her out in the cold and snow and she dies.
HE KILLED HER! YOU DO NOT TAKE A SICK CHILD OUT IN THE SNOW!
I so still soooo amazingly anger and it has been months since I have seen it but I just cannot get over this.
I want Tomoya punished. And how could everyone - especially Akio and Sanae, leave this stupid young father who just lost his wife alone with this dying child.
AAAGGGGGHHHH!!!!
I read that Japan just had it's first jury trial. Judge or Jury, I think either would find that Tomoya is responsible for the death of Ushio and deserves at least 10 years or so in prison to think about his child care skills. And maybe a vasectomy, too.
I wish I had never started this After Story. I hate it.
You're looking at it with the wrong angle. Ushio was going to die anyway, sooner or later, and Tomoya knew that deep in himself. After loosing Nagisa, he could not bear to loose someone else so dear for him, and so he decided to take the only last chance he could see to save Ushio (and him), that is going back the the sunflowers' field (he was in a very bad shape at that time too, there are some clues about it during the episode, and we see him dying just after Ushio). You can't blame him, everything else failed before, he just didn't know what to do.
