I know people are going to accuse me of being a hater again, but wow that was just bland if not downright awful for what is supposed to be a resolution to a key point in Mirai's backstory as well as the real introduction of a new character into the show proper in Sakura. First of all her motivation doesn't seem to make any sense or have anything to do with Mirai or what happened in the past between them. You'd think she'd blame Sakura for the death of her sister or something, which while also unreasonable would at least make sense within the context of her backstory and be kind of dramatic, but no she apparently just wants to keep the weapon some dude gave her cause she's upset that she couldn't be a Spirit World Warrior and blames it on Mirai (???)

Also the fight choreography in this episode made no sense at a lot of points either. Aside from my usual complaint of everything just being kind of quick cut one and done admittedly nice Sakuga looking sequences (don't find these exciting or tense at all) you have things like Sakura firing her gun spear thing off, a bunch of lights flashing and a sudden cut to Akihito running up to find her passed out on the ground. What made her fall down afterward? Who knows. At least the last fight between Mirai and Sakura was somewhat passable but even then it's on the low end of fight scenes this season as far as I'm concerned. Meh....

The show desperately needs to either drop the attempted comedy bits entirely for other stuff or find new gags/jokes. I get it, Akihito likes glasses and thinks he's in a comedy duo with Hiroomi, I get that Mirai is clumsy and pathetically poor and destitute, I get that Mitsuki thinks the guys are perverts, I get that Hiroomi is a siscon and has homoerotic tendencies....BE FUNNY ALREADY! Even if you found these gag bits riveting somehow (I don't as they're a dime a dozen in your average series albeit used more sparingly on average) are they really funny the 2nd, 3rd times or however many more times the show feels intent on running through the same routine? At this point it's just a lazy writing effort.

And then we come down to what is supposed to be the emotional climax of the episode and potentially Mirai's entire character arc to date (which by the way has been wafer thin) that was resolved like it was no problem at all apparently. Mirai tells her to go back to the person she was, weapon turns around and attacks her (I thought it just siphoned energy from her) something about a bell, guy who gave her the weapon shows up, something about a calm and going beyond the boundary from Mitsuki's sister and everything is left up to a cliffhanger. Maybe that's not the end of things, but for now I'm just left scratching my head.

I have to question some of the dialogue in the backstory scene with Mirai, Yui and Sakura here too:

Mirai: "We're Heading On Out."
Sakura: "I'll be Waiting. I'll make dinner. That's All I can do."
Yui: "That's what makes you more special than all of us!"

What is that supposed to mean or imply? This is the cornerstone back story scene of these character relationships and I'm not even sure what I'm supposed to be feeling. Pity that she feels useless? Admiration that she's not a Spirit World Warrior and has leet cooking skills? Why does this lead her to attack Mirai who is supposed to be her friend?

And really it's just lazy lazy half-hearted awkward disjointed writing and directing all throughout this episode. This is just....eh...so utterly bland, indistinguishable and lifeless and if the art quality and fight seasons aren't even on a level I find exceptional pretty much all I have left is a commitment to adding a more critical tone to the threads.

The comedy in this show is still hit or miss. I don't know... I feel like they could just do away with this kind of humor entirely since, IMO, it ruins the mood of the show. Just focus on the plot, giving the characters more personality and getting the tone right.

I just feel like everything is half-assed right now. They try to bring in drama but it fell short. They try to add in comedy but it's not that funny. All it is right now is a nice looking anime with mediocre plot and cast of characters.

Unlike SAO though, I can't quite put my finger on the problem. Or rather I can put my finger on it but it is complicated to explain. The best I could say would be the entire scene in the club room, with the bonzai, glasses fetish, the AKB references, were all very funny, but it just didn't gell. The problem is with the adaptation. A good example would be how in this episode Mirai overcomes the Human Restraints easily, but a couple of episodes again she was weak against them, so why the difference? Granted I know Sakura isn't that strong, but the whole way they built this conflict seemed to contradict what they showed before. It's like the explanations are consistent, but the animation isn't. That is an adaptation issue.

The main problem is that KnK contains about 75% anime original material so far, and the director is too inexperienced to handle it. The ENTIRE Sakura sub plot is anime original. Mirai was never 'weak' in the LN's, so there wasn't that inconsistency of how she suddenly become better.

Most of the inconsistencies that have irked me in the past episodes are because they come from material that's not in the LNs.

Pretty good episode, the action scenes were amazing and solves Sakura's problems.

Though an issue is that it ended to quickly for Sakura to give up the fight, and honestly I wished that the fight should last a little longer and more about her past but it was an intense scene overall.

That ending though, the refrence to the title.

Solid episode.
The dramatic scenes don't have the best dialogue. Just not enough development to make the changes believable.

KyotoAni is pretty good with everything else except with characters... oh well at least they're not hateable.

The guy with the sunglasses was probably expecting all that.

Mirai
>says shoes of a younger girl
>guesses Hiroomi
lol more fujoshi? I think it's getting a bit old now since a lot of anime are doing it (NouKome, Kuroko's Basketball, Outbreak Company etc.) but eh at least it makes a bigger sail to ship.

Gimme dat BL CD.

Agree
talking about the director (forgot the name), he's not that inexperienced though, but it's his debut as a director
hope the episode 8 will be more solid than ever, with that kyoukai no kanata title dropped

I think she meant that Sakura was more special than them because she is a normal girl who can do normal things ( making dinner).

That naked men thing was really funny, and judging by what Hiroomi did he deserved it, doing something like to your sister is really low.
In any case the episode itself was better as last week especially after the bad ending from last week and a little bit more from the past was shown.
Seems Sakura set aside her revenge but there are still people out there who want to harm Mirai for some reason, not to mention that the Hollow was mentioned again.

Ha ha ha. They said something perverted. Then got called perverts.

The dialogue that's not directly relating to the plot in this show is just God awful. And way too cut-and-paste. They've had the same exact conversation every episode now. And it wasn't even funny the first time. No, not even yaoi can save the comedy for me.

The "drama" this episode was a miss for me. And I feel the same way as this:
Paul said:
The fight scene felt kinda... anti climatic. Sakura must have not been chasing after Mirai for very long to give up that easily.

This episode was an improvement from last week, that's for sure, but I just can't get myself to care any more.

I really can't see this anime getting anything above a 6 from me. And it really sucks because I had such high hopes.

This episode seemed kind of rushed tbh, the reconciliation between Mirai and Sakura lacked in impact. Don't even understand what Sakura was really mad about (obviously something to do with her sister's death, but never explained if she thought Mirai did it on purpose, if she's just mad it was an accident, if she's jealous of Mirai's powers, etc.) so no idea why she suddenly had a change of heart. This show does certain things well, the funny scene with Akihito and Hiroomi and their delusions was good as always as was the scene where Mirai catches Akihito with Sakura in his room. As a whole though, it seems like they are trying to cram too much into too little time and not giving enough development to the situations and characters. It's episode 7 but it feels like so little of substance has been revealed.

Blog post here.

Its amazing how this anime evokes no emotion at all in me. Its not even like some anime that make me hate it not even that. I just dont feel anything watching this anime except for a few chuckles here and there in the comedy scenes. This anime is kind of the definition of soulles for me. Especially this episode.

But yet again pretty visuals and while somewhat really dry the story shows a small bit of promise.

Still in terms of characters so far this show is a 2/10.

Well that was anticlimactic. Sakura abandoning her revenge like that all of a sudden was pretty weak tbh, her resolve seemed far stronger than that in previous episodes. The whole thing just felt so random. Extremely disappointing.

Highlight of this episode to me would be Mitsuki mic stand. Totally screenshotted that.

I personally think the whole conflict between Sakura and Mirai was a bit underdeveloped. Sakura said she realized who was important to her/what mattered, but we didn't really see that develop, which was kind of disappointing for me. :\
On the other hand, I'm excited that we're starting to get deeper into the plot!

Ofc Sakura has to be in Mirai's class.Only a matter of time till she joins the club too.

Goggles and glasses not the same.

Magic Minister Guy gave Sakura her weapon.

Mirai saves Sakura's life and tells her some words Yui said to make her feel better.

Lull?"A period of stagnation where everything comes to a halt."

"It's also...what lies beyond the horizon." Title drop.

But man, that was disappointing. The episode was rushed as fuck. The issue with Sakura was just suddenly resolved. Why do they need to do that filler-like last episode if they are gonna rush the important part... It felt like they are not sure what they wanna do. Come on Director, you can do better than that...

I dunno why the story is all over the place but I hope the remaining episodes wont be disappointing.

This episode actually makes me think... why do they even have to make 6th episode? I would say Girls und Panzer recap filler is 100 times more beneficial than that, since disconnection I felt from 5th episode to 7th episode almost makes it even worse than average filler which at least try to keep up with moods.

It's actually very easy to explain, which is amateurish script and horrendous direction. Inconsistencies with character dialogues are actually at level of interfering its story and plot development, even characters themselves as a whole. Also, I've kept looking at camera works in this series - which feels out of place a lot of time and somehow miraculously make high quality animation plain and awkward.

In terms of visuals/aesthetics I'm totally, 100% in love with this show. Hell, I really like the entire concept of the show and the characters we have been presented with as well. Unfortunately. I feel like in terms of the other story elements that are vital to the success of this anime like character development, plot, and dialogue... it fails on many levels. This lukewarm episode just solidified that as well.

I want to love this show so badly because it has phenomenal potential to be a fantastic slice-of-life/action anime (and because I love everything I've seen from KyoAni), but I just cannot get on board with how disjointed everything feels. :( Now with the title drop I hope KnK kicks it in to gear with these last few episodes.
