Great episode, it was far above every past episode before in terms of drawings and animation (almost the whole time!!). Clearly, this one wasn't produced mainly in Korea or some other sub-contract country.

To see Milia, who was acting all pride and superior before, tricked in challenging the Earthlings by a Zentradi they considered stupid and annoying was worth it. It even accidentally led to her first "dance" with Maximilian.

Of course, Focker's scene was quite well handled and seemed quite in-character

5/5

He didn't know that he was injured because it was in his back and couldn't see it.

When the three shots hit the plane, we get a clear inside-cockpit view of him reacting to the shock in his back immediately after.

Until now the Robotech series has been far superior to me. But the way the death of Fokker was handled was much much better.

@CodeBlazeFate How different are the scenes concerning Roy's death in Robotech? Different music, dialogue or cuts chain?

@FMmatron Despite being 100% comedic, "Warera Loli Conda" is often very well used. It helps that they fit the overall tones mix of the show too.

@St0rmblade I was baffled by the negative reception here too. But there is a certain thing you can see in common internet users (when reading opinions about films for example) and even more among internet anime consumers: a "lack" of interest in the way things are shown, direction, etc. While they often shout after simple oral "exposition" etc, they cried for matter of factly presented events and scene.
Sorry if it feels presumptuous (I'm not trying to weave everyone in the same pot of course).

I forgot to mention it back then, but watching (yet again) CCA a few days ago I couldn't help but think about the "pineapple salad" here when Astonaige cried for Kayla. I wonder if it was an intended nod.

" though Astonaige mentioned just some salad, not specifically a pineapple one "
Yes, but it still sounds very specific. Enough for a reference. Question: a reference to Macross (some people worked on CCA later I think), or a shared reference to some older work?

He did get shot in battle and he did die in Claudia's hose after one last discussion with her, so I'm assuming they're about the same.

Top 10 dumbest anime deaths. Why exactly didn't he just immediately go to the hospital after coming back? Was the pineapple salad really that important? If he had the time to go all the way to her house, sit around and play the guitar, then pretty sure they could have been able to save him.

Focker is the realest MVP and senpai. Sad to see him leave like that.

Misa facing up to the consequence of her actions.

Milia weeds out the true ace of the Macross. GO THE BLOODY HOSPITAL/INFIRMARY ROY!

Minmay shows signs of her overwork.

I didn't realise when I first watched this that the song Foker was playing was Runner.

I was surprised that Major Fu-- I mean Focker died instead of Max, Max just came out of nowhere playing with godmode on so I figured they must be setting him up to die.

Still baffles me that Hikaru is obsessing with Minmay the Thot when he got a shot with best girl Hayase.

It’s a shame we didn’t get to see the spies on a disco party.

A lot of instances of Itano Circus in this episode, it seems. But didn’t Milia fire missiles *inside* Macross? So there should be a lot of destruction in the civilian block?

When Minmay fell asleep on Hikaru’s bed, I teared up!

And I expected Focker to die, because he’s a father figure to Hikaru, and there were some worrying death flags in this episode… But I thought everything was okay after he returned! Not like this! ;_; I cried. Even the toy plane is broken now. The score was fitting too, they really ripped my soul with this screechy violin and used silence to convey shock properly. I really can't get why people in this thread dislike Focker's death so much. Who gives a damn about some hospital? Just enjoy how a cool guy went off in the sunset. See you, space cowboy!
By the way, what song was he playing on guitar? Was it "Cinderella"?

---------------------------

@Rei_III It seems that many people like the "tell don't show" over "show don't tell" paradigm, which is pretty strange, considering that anime and movies constitute a visual medium. I think both approaches are great in their own ways, and there're certainly instances of them being handled exceptionally (as well as poorly, of course), so there's no need to strictly prefer one to another. Your characterization might describe some of the more casual viewers, I think; from what I know, many dedicated fans take an interest in learning about various directors and their styles, as well as other staff (it usually starts with "more noticeable" people like directors and moves to less noticeable like seiyuu, charadesigners, animators, etc). I was like this myself, gradually taking an interest in specific personalities and their styles. It's likely that many otaku-oriented projects (expos, translation projects putting up interviews, etc) contribute to the rise of interest in visual presentation in anime and the whole "behind the scenes" stuff, so that people move on from being "casual crunchyroll watchers" to something more.

Now that you mention CCA, I can't stop thinking about that moment too :o It's nearly impossible to tell for sure whether such moments are references or just coincidences without a confirmation from the staff; though Astonaige mentioned just some salad, not specifically a pineapple one

By the way, it took me a while to realize that their names were probably a wordplay, at least it looks like that in romaji.

As for salads, can't remember them appearing anywhere else, be at anime, film or literature; though there's a chance.

So how exactly did Focker die? From the frame where he fell on to the floor makes it look like he was shot but if so how did Claudia not hear it? If they were in the same room she must have heard it. I think I am missing something.

They stepped it up - great! Such an unexpected and sad ending. Fun with the lolicon joke. Such a good mix of everyday drama/comedy and fighting.

Wow...I didn't except that conclusion. Rest in peace Major Focker, you were a true legend to the very end and poor Claudia - I'm feeling as devastated as she is at the moment. Really wish we got more time between my favorite ship in the series but even moreso I wanted to see Maj. Focker go out in greater blaze of glory than this rather humdrum episode.

Being Hikaru is suffering, Jesus Christ.

He doesn't go out taking down Darth Vader, he doesn't even have a big climactic death battle scene. It's a battle and sometimes people die in unexpected ways. A classic character death.

Yeah. Sometimes you're alive and then you're not. :(

lol He didn't even get to taste the pineapple salad. Finally someone important dies, in the last episodes we've seen a lot of mechas/jets exploding but none of the pilots have been missed.

I'm glad they're making the statement that you die if you're killed. From how many pilots died I thought they just had infinite pilots!

The nurse said it earlier in the episode to Hikaru. "It's not uncommon for people fine at first but suddenly keel over dead." He didn't know that he was injured because it was in his back and couldn't see it. Dumb, I know, but that's my best explanation.

That's a cool theory. I think he just thought he was going to die anyway so he used his last moments to be with the woman he loves.

I had a feeling he would die eventually but not in a random battle like this. :(

I hope Focker's death makes Hikaru wake up and let go of Minmay.

Totally unexpected. No foreshadowing, no cliché moments, no heroic deaths. This one was one of the most well-handled deaths I've seen in any anime. Yes, this is war, it's not a playground. Being a soldier means that you're on the brink of death, each and every fight. Macross continues to surprise me in the best possible way.

I expected Focker to die in episode 1 or 2 and was surprised he made it to the mid-point of the show. So that lessened the blow of him dying. However, I am a little confused how he managed to get out of his plane, find a guitar, get to his girlfriend's house, hang out for a bit, and then collapse without anyone seeing the bleeding bullet holes in his back before that moment. Seems like that could've been sequenced a little more logically.
