It's just me or those episodes (all of them until now) are a bit (or more than just a bit) rushed?? They just don't catch the feeling well... The ep 1 was +/- good, the ep 2 rushed as hell, the 3rd one was rushed to the point of "confusion" (1 min a guy wanted to kill the girl, 5 mins later: let's be together forever because of things that will be poorly explained), and this one, 4th, rushed as well!!

Don't they understand when an ep has poor storytelling?

They are trying to adapt a 300 chapter story within 52 episodes, that's an average of about 6 chapters per episode when a good average is 2.5-3 chapters for a Shonen. Also the story was made over 20 years ago when the story telling conventions were fresher and more common.

That, young Sir, is a very poor excuse! If they need more eps to make it right just divide the show or add more eps.
What they are doing to the show is "ruining" it!

I really want to like this show, but it's really not good
Episodes 1 and 2 were rushed, but passable. Episode 3 had bad characterization, directing and editing.. And here once again we have a newly introduced character with a 600 year old grudge, having a change of heart in a matter of seconds thanks to some platitudes from Yoh. In retrospect all 4 episodes so far feel very formulaic as well.

I haven't read the manga, but this show really makes you appreciate the liberties the older version took with adapting the story and the vastly superior directing it had. Watching the first episodes of both back to back, is like night and day.
This version seems to be enslaved to the manga but isn't clever enough to make sensible changes to adapt to the new medium and its episode count.

OH! And That!

For the ones that like to bother others (like me) with "you should read the manga/LN", please stop. I don't read mangas, I will NOT read mangas, I will not listen to what manga readers complain in adaptation to the anime counterpart, I only watch anime except in very few and specific situations.

That's what I was saying. They needed at least twice the episodes. This would do a lot to fix both the pacing and characterization issues.

Seeing Anna cry makes me sad, she cares for Yoh a lot.

Somehow I did not expect Ryu to get infatuated with Anna, is that going to be a running joke or something?

Really liked how Yoh turned the tables on Tokagerou by letting the latter posses him.

Well it has been a long while since last time I read the manga so I can't remember every details from the manga, but even then I could tell this and the previous episodes was quite rushed compared to the manga.

I'm still not exactly sure if 52 episodes is really enough to adapt whole 300 chapters into the anime.

I'm only curious what will the anime-only feel at the end of the anime when

There is nothing to be "not sure about" when the answer is obvious; it's not enough.

Ryu's interest in underage girls is, yeah. At least in the manga, it was a running background joke, but it also makes him obsessed with Lyserg later on, because he mistook him for a loli at first meeting. Yet the feeling doesn't go away when he finds out he was a dude, so.... yeah, Ryu is weird, and that side of him definitely plays a character role in a lot of areas.

We should be grateful they will try to adapt the whole manga not do a 25 ep that will do 100 chapters and then wait 5 years or never if the anime doesn't make money. A lot of mangas don't even have adaptations so don't be very critical

Anna's insults have no bounds. Poor Ryu. He got rejected by just two words. Out of all the cast now, I find her the most entertaining to watch, at least from this episode.

Yoh had to deal with another freak again. Heh, he just can't catch a break.

To be fair to the anime's pacing, the manga often found itself getting way too slow a lot of the time. Especially early on where most of it was bogged down by a lot of extra fluff. While I do feel this anime is going a little faster than necessary, this episode had no business being seven chapters long in the manga.

Right? What anime have they been watching to think "nothing has happened" thus far?

It's clearly setting up characters one by one and more is brewing. I don't understand how someone can think this.

Idk man, i look it up that guy have watched more anime than me. I'm surprised.

My guess is he didn't really like the concept but forcing himself to watched it, so probably not really focus because the interest isn't really there.

Remember back when people could distinguish fiction from reality and it was just funny? Yeah, I miss that time.

I mean, if you find pedo comedy funny, that's on you. I'm not one to judge. It's a matter of tastes regarding media in the end.

It might sound unbelievable, but Anna is 13 and Ryu is 17, they are both minors. Is it still creepy? Yes, but that's part of the joke. You're watching a Japanese cartoon with Japanese cultural influences. Creepy perverts are common in Japanese comedy in general. It might not be your thing, but you can't expect Japan to have the same views on comedy as the west. Just gotta deal with it.

Mate, it was just a comment referring to a less-than-a-minute long scene I found curious. I'm honestly more concerned about this show's handle of pacing rather than Ryu's interest in banging 13 yo girls.

Ryu got "murdered" by a little girl. :D

I think this episode was the best paced one so far. It did not feel like they crammed a bunch of chapters into one episode this time.

I also laughed a lot during this one; very funny moments. Ryu's so dumb but he is growing on me :D "YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT BESTO PUREESU!" lmao And Anna crying over Yoh was adorable; she really DOES love him. yaaaaay xD

Manta: WOW! Yoh-kun predicted Toge's reaction!

Anna (about to end the world) NO. HE. DID. NOT.

@katie_potaty

I recommend the older version if you want to know more about the characters. I am watching both versions and it works well.

For those that dislike the Talk no Jutsu

The reason why Yoh trusted his body to Tokagero:

-He was the result of the harsh times, thats why he was a bandit
-He has a strong will to survive, thats why he ate the body of his dead mother(he was starving at the time), the anime didnt show this important info
-He loved his mother(as the episode showed)

Knowing all this, Yoh was confident that Tokagero was a good person that was forced to do bad things

Unfortunately the pace of the anime is creating a bad reputation of Shaman King, when it really shouldn't.

I hope this helped.

It conveyed it all that just fine to me; I think these people just aren't paying attention, to be honest. It has nothing to do with the pacing.

I love the manga, but after this episode It's safe to say that this adaptation is really rushed to the point I feel like all the scenes are lacking emotion. Shows like these are the reason I am staying away from anime more and more as time goes by.

I HATE the super fast pacing and the low episode counts in anime nowadays...

Scenes are lacking emotion and things are not getting explained very well.

I still watch the good (and long) ones with slow to normal pacing. But fast paced is not for me.

I prefer live action TV shows in the west a lot more recently. A lot of long and complete shows with good pacing.

If you have read the manga, you know the pace is actually very good!! They only omitted a few details that aren't really important to understand what is happening.
I hope they're doing this because the fans already saw these scenes in the OG anime, which has A LOT OF FILLERS, so you can't compare the OG with the 2021 version 🤷🏻‍♀️

Just give it an opportunity!! The story is excellent, with great characters' development and one of the best antagonists 🔥

Fitting most of the content into an episode is NOT the same as having good pace.

Now I would personally argue that if you have to cut ANYTHING out of the scene, the scene is already rushed

But what makes GOOD pace is when the events take enough time for the watcher to really take it in. If something is supposed to go by really quickly, the pace must be fast, if a scene needs to have tension or be emotional you need to slow the scene down, let the thought linger and music to build the atmosphere.

At the current pace the anime conveys large part of the information to the viewer, but it does give him the time to feel what he is told the characters are feeling.

It's not a terrible adaptation, and the source material is still really good, but it could have been better. Still at least we DO get Shaman King anime at all, so I do not want to complain more than it is necessary and focus on the fact that despite issues it's still more faithful to the source than most animes

I'm surprised at the people commenting that this "isn't a battle shounen", because this adaptation of SK is exactly like a battle shounen: tournament-style battles between various teams/people who take down opponents, take their armor/spirits/weapons, and move forward. So far the tournament part hasn't been that emphasized, but there have been confrontations with the purpose of taking down opponents.

Can't say this episode managed to keep my interest, and it was weird to see Anna break down so easily when her character's all about maintaining a strong front even when she feels weak. Not to mention how in the previous episode she was all about trusting Yoh even when he put himself in danger.

So far, this show doesn't really have a "heart".

Anna feels many things I'm sure, but I'd say weak is never one of them ^^'.

The reason why Anna broke down is a bit more complex. As long as she is by his side, he is in no real threat, no matter the enemy she can save him before he is killed. Of course she does not want to do so, because well, she isn't always going to be there to baby sit him. He can't be getting used to Anna bailing him out of every threat, but if she ever believed he is about to die - she would step in.

The thing is, Yoh was strong enough to overpower Tokagero, not give him control of his body and try to have an endurance match over who can resit the other for longer period of time. But Yoh, being himself did not want to go over all of that trouble and instead put his trust in that "it'll work out in the end" - which in this case it did.

But IF he guessed wrong, Tokagero could have killed Yoh on the spot. He put himself in a situation where nobody could have saved him. And sending the bandit to hell nor summoning Yoh's ghost wouldn't really make the situation any better for Anna. There aren't many people Anna cares about, so losing one of them is even more devastating.

Thank you for taking the time to explain. I guess "weak" wasn't a good word, more like "helpless", like she can't be as strong as she thinks she should, or do as much as she thinks she should.

I think the direction in that scene was the bad part, because we didn't get a focus on Anna. When she broke down, both her and Manta were in the shot and the shot itself was pretty uninteresting, compared to what it could have been if we got a lingering closeup of her with voiceover saying how worried she was — especially since she had a deeper understanding of things than Manta.

Yes the story is one big tournament battle but it doesn't mean it focuses on physical combat. Shaman King is about battling with wits
, like Death Note was but flashier. It's not a Talk no Jutsu like some would believe just because Yoh can talk people into having a change of heart; it doesn't even go as nearly as long as a standard Talk no Jutsu.

Shaman King is a series that focuses on human characteristics while cleverly disguising it as a standard shounen of its time. It's more about character dynamics than it is about combat despite the well flushed out system. That's why this episode is so good because yeah it's a fight but it also delves into so much deeper concepts. It's like if Rurouni Kenshin had fights with impact like Soujirou's but almost every fight is like that. I agree that Anna breaking down should've been longer, but I'm just glad they didn't omit the scene entirely. Tokagerou was well fleshed out however which is really impressive for just one episode.

I'm so hyped to see episode 5, this is where things get turned up to an 11.

They are trying to adapt a 300 chapter story within 52 episodes, that's an average of about 6 chapters per episode when a good average is 2.5-3 chapters for a Shonen. Also the story was made over 20 years ago when the story telling conventions were fresher and more common.

this lol how do you expect something that came out more than 20 years ago to not be generic, when another 5 thousand anime were created in between :D

Well, Dragon Quest was able to capture that nostalgia feel without being dragged by now generic cliches and tropes.
