Eh
I was excited to see another anime like Aoi Hana since Aoi Hana was extremely beautiful in my opinion
I watched the first episode and I was disappointed
The art was not very easy on the eyes :\
And the animation was veryy jerky and unsmooth
Also the only song I found appealing was the opening theme
The ending theme was ok
All of the background music seemed out of place and it all sounded the same
It didn't seem to mesh well with the scene
Also I don't like it when more of the episode is shown after the ending theme (but I'm not gonna hold that against me watching the anime since it's really not that big of a deal)
I do have to admit that the scene with Senpai and the lesbian girl (i don't remember her name yet) where in the library putting the books away i almost shed a tear :(
I'm hoping that this series really starts to get better in the next few episodes ^_^

just watched episode 1 and in my opinion i think this is one of the worst animes this season.
im not to much of a big Shoujo Ai fan but i seen a few Shoujo Ai animes but this one just sucked. maybe it was because it was only the first episode but i dont know, ill wait to see till episode 2 comes out.

hope it gets better because i only rate it a 2/5 so far and im afraid i might even drop it down to a 1 xD

Sasameki Koto is by no means as good.

Long an interesting text.

Well, you kind of misunderstood me. I wasn't really comparing those two based on any similarities. I was just comparing them solely based on my personal enjoyment of just having watched 2 different anime shows. Moreover that sentence had a background story in the previous sentences. I also stated that I really liked this first episode.

I know what you state and I am always watching (pseudo-)yuri or (pseudo-)shoujo-ai shows just because they are so rare. Also because most of them have a better plot than many hetero romance anime.
But then again I always enjoy your long and interesting posts and your reviews.

i've been waiting for this anime for quite a while, since i like the manga and, honestly, i'm disappointed.
i hate love stories, which is why i find aoi hana boring like hell. i've dropped both karekano and toradora when these series started to be more romantic than comic.
if the rest of sasameki koto is going to be like the first episode, i highly doubt i'll manage to watch it without falling asleep. :D

It was OK. Nothing that stood out that made it amazing, but at the same time it isn't dislikeable.

I like the OP, dislike the ED.

Sumi is too much like Fumi for my taste though, and Kazama is just like A-chan, so I feel like this show is such a big anime-like resemblance that I might not like it.

I'm hoping the next episode will be better however..

Pretty boring!!! I don't think I'll be watching this one. It wasn't bad, but with all the good shows this season, I can see myself putting this off, and then having the whole thing on my HD, and never getting around to watching it. And thus, it becomes just another show taking up space on my HD. So, I think this is Dropped!! Urahara Out!!

Not the best first episode of the season since I feel like it is kind of slow and too dark but I did really enjoy the second half. This could be easily one of my fav show of the season if what SunyiNyufi said was right.

Pretty much an okay episode but somehow i feel a little bit bored because the story somehow a bit too rushed. Also the seiyuu voices were frickin too small !

But i have expectation for this. I think this could surpass Aoi Hana, which is lack of one thing that Sasameki Koto has, a little bit humor.

Oh well, hope this is goin to be better

What a coincidence--that was EXACTLY whose voice I was using myself for the manga. She does have a mastery of deadpan snarking and exasperation, which was what I was expecting. Ah well. Let's see what this other seiyuu can do.

I'm hoping the tall chick, can't remember her name, the one with the midget girlfriend, would have a Saiga Mitsuki type voice. But I don't think she will, going by the list for the voice cast.

This looks more drama filled than Aoi Hana.

Ushio is...sort of annoying. With how easily she falls for people and only likes cute girls. Reminds me an AWFUL lot like a friend of mine =__= And it's frustrating..

I liked it, but then again, I absolutely love the manga. I actually do like the seemingly more serious tone the anime is taking, and hope the creators run with it.

i thought it was nice. i had no clue what this was about when i started watching it so when i realized it was a yuri show it really surprised me. it was pretty good though, the story doesn't seem to original but i've never really watched a yuri show before so we'll see what its like with them in it. seems to have plenty of emotion in it, which is always a plus.

Interesting concept, nice intro to the series in the first episode.
Going to put it on hold till I finish some others, but definitely interested in how this one is going to pan out.

I did love the part where the straight friend asked "How bout me" and was told "I only like cute girls"

... ... wtf? Where did all the drama come from? The manga had such funny moments as well as serious ones, but this one seems like all seriousness. The atmosphere will get too heavy in later episodes if things continue this way.

Slow-paced but it had enough vaguely realistic emotions and drama to make me interested, particularly since recently I've been watching too much anime lacking in emotion. I'm not that fond of school settings and the characters didn't feel that realistic, but it was only the first episode. Too soon to make comparisons to Aoi Hana, maybe I shouldn't do that at all.

Decent first episode, felt like a few of the comedic reliefs were a bit forced, though. Based on this episode alone, it seems like the manga will have been superior as far as getting emotional reactions, at least from me anyway.

I noticed a few people comment on how it was boring, but I look at it as a "relaxing" watch. It's nice and quiet, which makes me focus a lot more and catch the little things that mean so much.

Like toward the end of the episode where Ushio and Sumika hold hands. Every little motion meant the world. The way they went from just cupping hands, to lacing fingers... and Sumika's grip getting tighter after being asked if they were going to be friends forever?

I'm years behind in watching this series though, so maybe that's why I have a heightened appreciation for this kind of romantic yuri. I'll definitely keep watching!

I'm surprised by the amount of complaining in this thread. I completed this series about 5 months ago, and I just re-watched the first episode because I was in the mood to revisit it.

This episode is amazing! It manages to subtly introduce the characters, set the direction and tone of the story, and hit the feels—all within 22 minutes. The non-verbal communication between the characters was particularly impressive. This isn't something that you often see in an anime; A LOT was said without words. The quiet chemistry between the characters is one of the things that makes this story work so well. And I loved the OP and EP. Not every show needs to start and end with a jamming pop-rock soundtrack.

I'd have to admit, this anime really spoke to me to a personal leve. It might be because I'm gay myself, and I've been into a lot of situations similar to Kazama's, but I feel like me liking this anime has reasons behind that.

I've took a break from watching yaoi because I got mad at how men (and women) are portrayed in those shitty stories and I was a little skeptical about watchign something tagged shoujo-ai. I expected silly school stuff and fanservice, but man, was I wrong. It is far from perfect, I'll admit, but so far, this one is the best shoujo-ai I've ever seen, as the resemblance to reality is great.

I can see why some might find it boring but what I don't seem to understand about this are a couple of things:

1. Why would you compare anime? Unless one is a completely rip-off of another I don't see no point.

2. I feel like most of the people complaining this one is boring were expecting lots of fan service, but I think the lack of it makes it great. We don't have kisses all over the place, dirty talking/touching and inuendos, but instead, young pure love of a girl who likes girls and tries to cope with that. Yes, very diffrent from what yuri and yaoi viewers want from their show.

But I do really appreciate the break from oversexualize characters and their lack of personality and reason, the abuse and the overused plot points that became just cringeworthy. It's a breath of fresh air.

Of course, I can't judge the whole anime based on the first ep, but so far, I like what I'm seeing. I hope I'll see more anime like this in the future.

In the visual aspect, there's not much to talk about. One of the main strengths of the manga is the clever panel compositions, and that is obviously lost in the translation between mediums. The one moment that was an improvement over the manga is the part where Kazama cries in the library, before Sumika consoles her. Otherwise, this episode doesn't have the polish that made the Aoi Hana adaptation so beautiful to look at, for example, and it doesn't really have much else going for it in the visual department.

The background music is a bit too much at times, sort of smothering the scenes. I really like the OP song, though, a relaxed piano driven piece and not electro J-Pop, which is refreshing.

tehnominator said:
So comparing a yuri anime with a het romance anime is particularly inadvisable. Compare it with other yuri anime. I'd like to think that some day, yuri will grow as a genre so that yes, we would be able to compare it with het romance which has had infinitely more time to develop as a medium.

While I don't think yuri should be excused from criticism, I agree with your comment in sentiment. Sadly, eight years later, while yuri has become more popular with audiences, it's still mostly restricted to short manga. An anime adaptation for Citrus is in the works right now, but besides that, I don't think there have been any remotely successful yuri romance TV anime since SK and Aoi Hana (and I'm pretty sure even those two didn't sell too well, even with a loyal but small audience), besides Yuri Bear Storm, I guess. Sakura Trick and Netsuzou TRap are fetish vehicles (which is fine and all but it's not what we need), so I'm reluctant to count them. Bloom Into You is one horse I'm betting on right now; it might just become popular enough to receive an adaptation in the near future.
