I couldn't fathom a worthy note on why I liked Goodnight Punpun, so I won't try and just let my indecipherable mush of thoughts race through my head and create something coherent enough for my own head to understand.

It tells a story from a outsider, which is Harumin, who seeminglesly had an easy life. Through his eyes we see how happy and peaceful his life is but as we know that cannot be further from the truth. We the readers know that chaotic life punpun experience and may experience in the near future but Harumin cannot see the hidden scars and the tradegy of Punpun. Moving on, Harumin who has now become a teacher, introduces a new classmate resembling the likes of Aiko and a boy gleefully gazing at her out of pure astonishment and curiosity leading us to the ending's possiblity might be a loop. The boy resembling, the girl resembling Aiko and even Harumin vaugely resembling the teacher. The similarites are seemingly endless. Making the reader question if the two students will live a similarly tragic life like Aiko and Punpun.

Damn, welp I thought we would get to see Onodera Punpun's face at the end of this series actually. I am disappointed. Also, we get to see Harumi, a decent person living amidst the masses of the people. He sees Onodera from an outsider's perspective and thinks "oh, Punpun looks fine in life" when it actually isn't. SHOW US HIS FACE ASANO!

First i want to say that this is just my own opinion and you can feel free to disagree, in fact id like to hear if you think that my take is just wrong and especially why.

The more i think about this ending the more i come to dislike it. It seems like both the main characters are involved in something much bigger than themself and just get destroyed/killed along the way and i felt like they deserved something more/better.
Punpun and Aiko are my favorite characters and Aiko is an amazingly well written one that stays consistent through the whole manga. Punpun feelt like a very relatable character to me, who suffers of depression and other kinds of anxieties, but is generally trying to do good (in his naive way). That said in the end Punpun drastically changes to a point where i simply could not feel any sympathy and understanding for him anymore and it felt like a betrayel and more importantly quite out of character for him aswell. I also just could not find any redeming qualities anymore that where there before and made him a way more complex character. In the End it seems like Punpun is quite drastically "regressing" in character development when i always held out hope for him to have some growth.

Punpun has had a very troubled childhood, so you can understand why he does the things he does and feel for him. But unlike Aikos situation, later in Punpuns adult life things change for the better. There are people who try to support him like the manager, his friends and most importantly Sachi. But even though all their efforts, Punpun turns into a complete "piece of sh*t" in the end and all the help and experiences both good and bad are kinda forgotten as he abuses Aiko to the point that she commits suicide.
Aiko is ofc not innocent herself by any means and its also because of her actions that everything spirals completely out of control, but her actions make sense in the context of the story. She was always alone and got abused by her mother so she simply cannot trust others, not even Punpun.
I was always holding out hope, because earlier on in the manga, even in the bad times, there was some glimmer of hope left, some good in the people even when they did bad things, which i found to be amazing and realistic and made them feel more real and complex. That said it never happend and in the end it is sachi again who "saves" Punpun. This was just so painful and depressing to read im lacking words for it.

And now i come to the part i dislike the most: The cultpeople lead by Pegasus where actually right and the dark spot aka "God" does really exist and is some kind of antagonistic/evil cosmic force. Why? Why is that the conclusion? And why does it potentially lead into a never ending cycle of despair and depression as the evil cosmic force can never be destroyed.
To me this revelation changes Punpun as a character completely and utterly for the worse. "God" is now not his dark side but some outside force influencing Punpun. I always though this was all about the characters action and decisions, that they make the choices and suffer the consequences. That they are free to choose. The relationships between them and character build up itself amazed me.
But now i get to know that Punpun was always influenced by some outside force and is quite clearly so at the end of the manga. This invalidates and deminishes all that i though was true about his choices and actions and it feels terrible.
It would explain why Punpuns behavior and character changes so heavly at the end, as he in his despair quite litteraly lets "God" take the wheel or atleast thats how it looks to me. It would explain his abusive behavior and the complete lack of both his cowardly/naive and positive points aswell.

I am not asking for a happy ending, i knew there would not be one, but this ending is just dissapointing to me. Both because it is beyond depressing, but also because i just think that this cosmic anatagonistic force and the Pegasus cult fighting it, just does not fit in there and wished it was just the crazy talking/idea of the cult people. Maybe i am just plain wrong or overrestimating the influence of "God" and there are surely things i missed, but as it currently stands i cannot like the ending.
That said i really was impressed by the style and the different and unique experiences i got while reading, which was unlike basically any other Manga if read before. So i still gave it a 9/10 because it really made me feel and think and i cannot get it out of my head. I do not think i can ever recommend this to anyone tho as i am still somewhat disturbed by this Manga.

PS: Before finishing my thoughs i read the interwiev with Inio Asano (mentioned in the comment above) and i now understand a little more as to why the author choose to go with this ending, but i still mostly stand by the points i make above.

I personally didn't care for Aiko. I felt sympathy for her at times but I can't say I liked her

punpun's descent into darkness, in the most realistic way possible, really one of the greatest pieces of fiction i've ever read. definitely lived up to it's dark and depressing reputation but it really kicks in around chapter 45 or 50, i think. i mean, it already has some relatively dark stuff but punpun's first sex scene is when it really takes a turn, for me.

love that one bit where sachi says that she wants to write a manga, from the perspective of an average person, someone who's not special, someone the average person can relate to. and oyasumi punpun is exactly what that is. punpun and yuuichi are my favorite characters because i can relate to their need to be in solitude to not hurt themselves or others the most, and just like them, i'm still very outgoing despite that need for solitude. nanjou was great too, i just don't have her kind of mindset though, would be great if i did tbf.

i'm 20 just like punpun for the roughest parts and can relate to a lot of punpun's struggles, so it's only natural that i've come to love this, although with a heavy heart. think this is the manga i have a love-hate relationship with now. easy 10/10 for me, definitely going in my favorites. the amount of realistic dialogue in this that felt like it was being said directly to me, is insane. it's like, more than just a manga, it's a message.

the themes and that last stretch of the manga where it's just punpun and aiko hit different as well.
the only thing i didn't like, was the whole 'end of the world' drama with god or whatever, takes up more content space than needed, i feel.
but, absolutely loved how great the art looked. loads of wallpaper worthy panels. also, really cool how punpun's face changes depending on his mental state, simple method but very unique and clever.

welp, fuck. i gave it a 10 but i don't feel an ounce of happiness when i'm thinking about oyasumi punpun lmfao i doubt i'll ever reread, but i feel like i read it at the right time in my life, so that's good. quite a bit of disturbing stuff, truly not recommendable to anyone despite my love for it. i can't see this ever becoming an anime either lol. need to do stuff to cheer myself up now! cheers to asano inio for making me feel this way lmao, with gorgeous art to boot.

okay. i've taken the necessary time to curl up in a ball and sulk in my bed for a bit. now i can give my thoughts on this series. off the bat. it wasn't incredibly impressive to start. i saw hints of greatness but i don't think it was until around chapter 40 where i think i reached the first streak of greatness but from there it's undoubtedly worthy of all the praise it's received. the second half is genuinely up there with some of the best stuff i've read and the weight i feel pressing down on my head after finishing it is something i haven't felt in a long time. it's bittersweet though.

aiko's suicide really surprised me actually even though it probably shouldn't have. i think it was the fact that the previous chapter we saw them somewhat happy or at least as happy as these two can really be given the situation even if the happiness is all a delusion and within 3 pages of the next chapter, she's dead. that shit hit me. the lead up to her suicide is really what makes it so impactful for me. over the 10 or so chapters before, we see a combination of very happy moments with punpun as well as some really terrible moments with him. i think this goes to show exactly why she killed herself. her life has been terrible and even now, with the person she loves and who loves her, her life is still at best a combination of good and bad moments so i think she finally decided that life was never going to be good for her if even now she could only be happy half the time. i'll try to lessen the impact on myself by looking on the bright side and pointing out that at least she has a few great memories in her last few days. damn... i'm putting myself through it by typing this all out.

punpun living his life after everything that happened leaves me conflicted. on one hand, i'm glad he's finally able to live a somewhat normal life with the people he befriended but i also can't help but be a bit upset he got a slap on the wrist probation for being the accomplice in a murder and now gets to live a happy life. but i feel like that's also what the author intended. i don't think he wants us to be happy for or unhappy for punpun, i think he just wants us to see punpun and i certainly can.

overall, pretty amazing. pessimistic works aren't usually my thing because they tend to be too one dimensional and exhausting to read but this is my exception. great writing made it deliver it's message while also remaining open enough to not be a drag to read. i'm hesitant on what score to give this but at the same time, nothing other than a 10 makes sense. art was gorgeous and it made me feel things i'm not sure i ever had before. even if it got a bit too weird and random at times, i don't mind and actually think that's part of what allowed me to trudge through this depressing story.

i feel at a loss of words but also have nothing but words to say about it.

i think i'll leave it at that.

Welp I've always wanted to read Oyasumi ever since I heard how highly rated it was and I can honestly say that it deserves every bit of its rating.
This manga at times didnt make sense, and felt really random but it was really thought provoking at times. Especially Punpun's inner monologues, those made me feel a whole bunch of emotions. This is honestly a manga I'm not sure whether I should recommend to someone or not but it definitely was a ride. Albeit it was hard go read and just really heavy at times. Definitely a 10/10 for me, although I dont think I ever want to read this again. Just once is enough for this masterpiece.

I can’t help but feel a part of my soul got tainted then died from reading this dark, gut-wrenching and sometimes convoluted tragedy; can’t deny the pull and emotional impact it’s had though (I stayed up until 3 a.m. to binge the whole thing; which is super rare)

It feels a bit like Norwegian Wood, doesn’t it? Gotta deduct 1 point cuz it’s simply too despairing and not good for our mental health

9/10 overall

all i can really say is that it was an amazing series

this was a series that held nothing back which is really hard to come by now days

i got lucky and found out about this series ut coming across a random tictok video

with that said all in all Aiko had to have been the person i felt the worse for cause in the end she had to go through the lies and abuse of her mom through out her whole life

she wanted to be saved but when it finally came it was already to late which imo made the end hurt that much more cause i felt if anyone deserved a happy end she did but she just died in suffering

nonetheless im glad i read this series.... i feell like this is one of those must read at least once kind of series

anyway its been a long time since a series got me feeling this way it has been a long time but at the same time again im glad i read it

It's tough to find the words to write about this manga. It's so guttural, it's pages and drawings brought me to some incredibly dark places. It's fantastically disturbing. Man, what a read. This'll take me some time to recover.

That was amazing. Such a dark, sad and twisted ending. Punpun wanted to return to normal ordinary life, and Aiko killed herself because she didn't want to be alone again. She had nothing left if Punpun wasn't with her.

10/10 strange, depressing, humorous, and fulfilling.

The end, i feel like. I want more, but i also don't.

Fact is that it rounded shit off back to the start. going in a loop.
and i like it, while what happened with aiko pains my heart and i goddamn wished for something else. it was painful.
I do think that how it ended was good.

overall, the manga has been an 11/10, something i can relate to. Its, frankly something else.

I think this manga killed my mood for at least a few days regardless of whether it was actually good. Some improvements I would make would be giving punpun had a horse head. his mom could be an older horse and the artist girl could have blue hair and the funny pose guy could have crashed at his house sometimes and aiko could have been a child actress

Reconnecting with an old friend lifts the spirit up, I am glad it ended in a happy place.
What I liked about this manga is how real the character's emotions and events seemed to interact, the ups and downs in life, and how lots of times life doesn't go according to plan, yet it showed how it could also get better as long as we keep on going.

Goodnight, PunPun.

Wow. what a masterpiece. From the storyline to the characters it was absolutely amazing. So many different interesting characters and the ending is pretty open aswell. Im sure i will still be thinking about this weeks from now on, im still sad it ended.. but just thank you for creating this amazing manga, Inio Asano. I don’t think i’ll find another manga quite like this in the foreseeable future. It was so unique and yet the world was so interesting to read about that i just wish there was more. I’m really curious how Punpun and all of the other characters will end up. Is Shizumu alive or is Seki just hallucinating him? What will happen to the others? We may never know. And that’s what adds to it: it leaves you to think, about punpuns future life and maybe also about your own future.

In short words: this manga was one of a kind and absolutely amazing from start to finish, i’m definitely curious about Asano's other manga. But for now:

Goodnight, Punpun.

This manga series left a hollow place inside my heart thatlll probably never be filled.I love this manga and i need my therapy now. Whats worse it that this ending showd that everything weve seen will happen again. This manga has been also a bit chaotic but chaotic in a good way and i loved it. I loved everything about it and im glad that i was born in a time where i can read this. The ending overall is a sad one but also a good one.And id just like to say this is my favorite manga by far and i dont think anything will ever come close to it.

Goodnight, Punpun

@shuffle_017 Punpun told the kids to "keep an eye" on Aiko's body, then he left, then if you remember there is a panel with something looks like an ambulance. Then when Punpun returns (or didn't), that place is empty and the kids and Aiko are gone.

So I think what happened is that ambulance took her body away.
