I am a first-time when it comes to "Fruits Basket". I haven't seen the previous adaptation nor I haven't heard much about it instead of short information that an anime like that exist. What got hooked me into this show? The concept that looks promising, I guess.

It gave me a feeling I feel while watching some old-school animes I love. What's more, characters' design, music and art are really good and make its anime's story even better. Voice actors did a fantastic job as well.

Tohru is adorable and so lively despite hardships she had to endure: death of her father, and sudden fatal car crash which led to her mother's death.

While I'm not a fan of forseeing future from Zodiac, Tarot or whatever and I think it is dumb, I am glad this anime goes its own way basic its plot on Chinese Zodiac, not being dominated by foretelling future or something using Zodiac as a tool for "hehe wizardry". At least for now. But I'm positive and I'm looking forward to seeing next episodes.

I think it’s kind of strange watching this new version after watching the old one so much that I remember every word. Other then the animation, some of the words and actions being changed I think they are doing a good job so far. However I really like the old animation better.

I was excited to see this since I read the manga back in high school. I was pleased with the animation so far. It's a great introduction to Tohru and the Sohma family.

I was never interested in watching the old version but since this new adaptation will cover the whole story and "Fruits Basket" can now be considered as a "classic" regarding the Shoujo genre I was like "why not giving it a chance?"

That said, this first episode sure seems to be a quite promising start. I really liked it and hope the plot stays this engaging throughout the next episodes.

Regarding the cast, I'm really liking Tooru's character so far. Such a lovely girl without a doubt. Yuki and Shigure seems nice as well but I don't know what to think about Kyou yet. I just hope he doesn't be the annoying kind of guy who always looks for confrontations but we'll see.

I liked this episode, it seems there will be interesting things ahead. I get the impression I'll have the same melancholic and sweet emotions what I felt when I watched the previous series.

A final thought: The Ending is too gay ... Ohh, it's true, this is a Shoujo ^^

Lol I refused to watch this remake bc I didn't like the art style, esp Tohru's oddly shaped head. But when it's in motion, you can't really tell :P

Takes me back to childhood memories. I shipped YukiXTohru SO HARD when I was little.

What a fun, cute show. With some emotional and tender parts.

I think I'm gonna love this.

As a slight aside, it's pretty cool seeing Black Clover's English voice actor for Licht doing Kyo. Here's got a little more emotion in this series, not so mellow and monotone. I like it.

I really enjoyed the first episode of the new version. I watched the first anime version over a decade ago and did not remember the story at all so I was in for a great start. I like the modern visuals and the slowed pace. I think it was fine to have Yuki's VA as female in the previous version since the manga seems to play a lot with gender, identity and a range of masculinities, from what I understand. I like the fumes at the end so much, they're so fluffy, colourful and shiny, like real plumes, so much fun! Looking forward to the next episode!

This had me smiling ear to ear nearly the whole time (except the sad parts). As if the original anime wasn't good enough, Fruits Basket remastered is going to be too much for me to handle. The voices are so spot on for the characters and I'm especially excited to see Kyo in action as he was my favorite in the first series.

As someone who really liked the 2001 version despite it being a poor adaptation, this entire episode had me grinning from ear to ear. Seeing Tohru, Yuki, Shigure, and Kyou animated once again is seriously giving me some serious nostalgic feels.

So far, this is already an amazing start! I love how everyone was introduced and even though I was already aware of Tohru's backstory, it still managed to tug my heartstrings a bit. Also Tohru is an absolute precious girl and must be protected at all cost!

I was and still am a big fan of the original Fruits Basket anime so I'm more or less certain I'll like this remake. Actually nearly teared up this episode despite already knowing Tohru's backstory.

One thing I do miss however from the old anime is Yui Horie voicing Tohru. I felt she fit her character extremely well so gonna have to get use to this new seiyuu.

so far this is 99% one by one like the 1st adaption, the 1% percent is actually what picks my interest.

like the animation and OST, though i maybe have too much expectation for this.

So, when do they fuck?

Jkjk... but not really... >:)

Anyways, first impressions? I really like it. Seems like we're going to get a good balance between laughs and tears and other feels, all being supported with some solid animation and music. For me, a red flag that I notice with myself is that if I find myself checking the time-thingy to see how far into the episode I am, then it's probably something I'm not really enjoying. Didn't check it once through this first episode, and it flew by because I really was into it.

I always thought fruits basket was just some popular but painfully generic shoujo. Maybe generic is not really a word that applies because shoujo isn't as big as other genres like, well, shounen. But you know, cute anime girl, cute anime guy(s), you know the drill. Basically I didn't think it was anything special, not anything that I'd enjoy. But I'm glad to say, after this first episode at least, I think I was dead wrong.

Was compelled to watch this because if you remember a few months back in spring, the final season of this aired. And for a fleeting moment, it reached the top spot on MAL as the highest scoring anime, before getting viciously attacked by hardcore fmab fan boys. Despite the attack, it's still up there, top 5 even if I'm not mistaken. Usually I tell myself that mal scores mean next to jack shit most of the time. Everything seems to be scored as a 7 or 8 and its hard to tell what's trash and what's not. But if you're literally in the top 5, I think that warrants enough reason to check it out.

I'm looking forward to watching this series, and really hoping to enjoy it as much as the rest of you. Maybe I'll finish the entire series in a week, or maybe I'll take a break after each season. Whatever it will be, I hope to be able to finish this feeling glad I watched it. I intend to leave my thoughts after each episode here in the discussion threads, unless I feel like there's nothing noteworthy to mention in an episode. Which, I hope is not the case- I hope every episode has something special that happens.

See you future-watchers in the next episode discussion thread, maybe!

Edit: Dang I almost forget to mention that this feels like akatsuki no yona. Reverse harem with happy-go-lucky girl who is surrounded by hot anime dudes who are part animal/dragon. But Fruits Basket definitely seems to be of higher production quality. And screw akatsuki no yona for leaving us in the middle of nowhere with how the show ended loool

First time watching this and decided to skip the old ver, of Fruits Basket since this has a higher rating

Some concepts are interesting and It did feel like an old anime with just newer animations wait isn't it the point of this ser-, First things first I'll just say is how does Tohru live in a tent outside in the forest like I don't even know how she survives there but nevermind that respect the hustle

Some mystery really makes me question what's next and there it is that's been answered for us just by Tohru hugging them turns them into their respective symbols quite the mystery there wow not like I got spoiled a bit reading the Synopsis good job.

So as someone who dropped the original after 4 episodes (It didn't hook me at all, I didn't find anything funny, just felt like I was watching nothing), this episode of the reboot was a lot better. Despite everything being more or less the same, it didn't leave me stonefaced, everything actually worked. While it wasn't in this episode, the OP was better (Somewhat), and so was the ED (Somewhat). The animation difference didn't really mean much to me (I watch boomer shit often enough that to me, "bad animation" means "I'm gonna spraypaint my eyes black"), though the seiyu all sounded more fitting (Didn't get Patalliro vibes from Yuki, if you know what I mean), and the line delivery was better overall. I think I'll be able to watch this adaptation without it feeling like a chore.

This series just seems so wholesome. Toru is just really sweet. I can relate to her by how she feels like a burden, because quite often I can feel like a burden too.

It was so sad how she lost her mother. I wonder what happened to her father?

Toru has such a strong work ethic. Too strong though. She's obviously burnt out and has made herself ill. Living in a tent hasn't helped.

I'm so glad those guys have taken her in. How cool would that be, to live with people who turned into animals? The dog guys is going to become an older brother, while I reckon Toru and the sweet rat/Prince are going to end up together. And I don't know what will happen with the arrogant cat guy.

Well, I forgot that it's a shoujo, but it doesn't bother me, I've heard a lot of good things about the series anyway. BUT, I have a big bias towards handsome white haired characters who are a "mystery", so I hope that doesn't make me hate this one, I'll try to enjoy trying to ignore that and another little thing that I don't say otherwise it will look like I'm hating the series just began xd

And I really am at odds as to whether that'd be a good decision or not.

I'm also a first timer here, I'm somebody who has never watched the original anime or read the manga in regards to Fruits Basket. I know it's a very popular Shojo and I know about the fact that it's about Tohru Honda, zodiac animals and the like but that's I feel a very basic level of understanding when it comes to the show in general so I thought: "What the hell? I might as well see what all the fuss is about." I watch the first episode of the remake and lo and behold, it's actually very charming in places, quite hilarious too. Tohru Honda is definitely a bundle of joy I've got to say and it's sad that her mother died in a car crash and she has to live in a tent as well as attend school and do a job just so she can pay all expenses for a place of her own. It's a good thing she has somewhere to stay now albeit with boys that can change into animals but that will be the next episode to tell us what's up with that.

Otherwise I'd say the visuals and the soundtrack are amazing so far and like I've said it's literally giving off a charming vibe about it. It's definitely I can go back to multiple times. The only thing I have against it, is the special effect at the end of the episode which was just a bunch of smoke which I feel might've been a bit better in the original where the animation probably worked better there but here the CGI feels really out of place. Otherwise I really enjoyed this first episode, I really did.

Just watched the first episode, and oh my gosh, I'm totally in love with the vibe it's setting! Tohru's strength and positivity, despite her losses, just sparkle, making her super likable right from the start. I love the Somas, and their mysterious charm has totally got me hooked already, not to mention how utterly dreamy Yuki is! ๐Ÿ˜ Having missed the original anime, I'm coming into this without any prior influence, but I really like the art style, even now in 2024. I can't wait to see how the story unfolds and to watch all the adorable relationships develop. A huge thank you to the new friends I've made here on MAL for recommending this gem! I was recommended this this show by a friend and after one episode i would say its a solid show.

Tooru is an interesting girl with a tragic backstory. Her living in a tent and taking care of everything by herself. With her having her own job managing money and going to highschool aswell. Her working extra hard at her job is kind of her though i think it would be better if she let the others at her job help her out.

Them cooking at school was probably my favourite part of this episode, i personally really like those friends of Tooru and that girl who has the "wave" powers is definitely my favourite of the three.

Yuki is also a kind lad for digging out Tooru's photo. Them all being possessed by spirits of animals is cool. If this turns out to be a love triangle with the introduction of that orange haired lad im gonna be kinda dissappointed, but i guess we will see as the show goes on.
