It's too early to tell for sure, but why not? You won't lose anything valuable by watching 8 episodes, whether good or bad. Besides, another person's opinion doesn't determinate your own enjoyment, so just see for yourself.

i could be wrong but i think black rock shooter is the personification of Kuroi's subconcious. The reason she got her ass kicked is because she suffered psychological trauma from Kagari

this anime seems like a watered down version of mahou shoujo madoka

Maybe, but even if thats the case the reason for her loss would be more the fact that yomi is still rejecting Mato.

It's not that bad, really. At least in my opinion. I think it's an actual retelling of the OVA, so I wouldn't drop this easily. Story is the same as the OVA, I'm still trying to make sense of what's the connection between the real world and the other world.

One thing I hate about this is the character re-design of Mato and BRS. WHAT HAVE THEY DONE!? Takanashi is better in the TV series and deadmaster with a veil and glasses adds to the charm. While Kagura is giving me the creeps.

I'm gonna stick around for a while see if it gets good.

Seriously, what have they done to Mato... T_T

This looks very similar to the OVA. I am not from the people who hate it(probably the fact that i wasn't some fan of Black Rock Shooter and didn't expect anything specific had something to do with it) so i might not feel bad watching this.

The art looks a little cheap and animation has bad and good moments so lets see.

I've been looking forward to this! I want to play the game!
So far, not bad, the idea of fantasy world and real world is good. Though I watched the OVA first ages ago, and I kinda prefer the Yomi and Dead Master in the OVA, I don't like Dead Master with glasses and Yomi's hair should be a bit curlier but I don't really care that much, i'll get used to her.
I think i'll keep watching, since it's only 8 episodes.

The fighting was awesome as usual and I kinda liked it how they connect it to both character

Just to clear things up for people, I wanna outline the distinctions between the different iterations of BRS.

BRS OVA- Established that the "Otherworld" is literally a supernatural/fantasy world with alternate versions of the characters acting as the personification of their emotions (though the OVA was vague so that's the best explanation I can give).

BRS Game- Completely different from any BRS interpretation. The game is sci-fi and has post-apocalyptic setting. The main character is actually called "Stella" and she is a clone weapon created to fight against the alien invaders as a last resort to save humanity. Stella's codename is "Black Rock Shooter".

BRS TV Series- Just like the OVA, some people say the "Otherworld" is literally a whole new world that has a connection with the real world, while others believe the "Otherworld" is just a manifestation of their struggles with epic action. Still too early to tell though, so we'll wait and see what explanation the episodes will give.

Episode was better than expected, ED was nice too.

Loved the BRS scenes although they were a little more violent than what I remembered from the OVA. That took me off guard but is by no means a bad thing.

The character design changes are disappointing but that's been discussed to hell by now.

Will continue to watch, if only for the otherworld battles.

The Slice of life segments were terrible, they don't belong in this anime.

The battles on the other hand: 10/10

6/10 overall, the school segments need to completely go away. This would've been a lot better with the game's apocalyptic story. I hope Japanese viewers are disappointed with the school portions enough to get the creators to just focus on the battles in the otherworld.

The counselor is suspicious considering the fights seem to be clashes of emotions. BRS didn't respond to any insults (attacks) from the wheelchair girl's jealousy because Kuro doesn't know how to hate, so instead she remained passive like Kuro bottled up her emotions and felt just confused and sad. If the counselor somehow is able to see the dimension where the 'fights' happen and they happen for real and not only figuratively, my guess is she be trying to make Kuro's darker emotions develop, making BRS a strong fighter in order to accomplish something. Telling Kuro it's natural to have some enemies might have been an attempt to give encouragement to her suppressed emotions of anger and hate, and indirectly urging her to get closer to Yomi would only fuel the jealously of Kagari.

2/5 for now. Sadly I don't see this becoming very interesting.

Well.
The art is kind of ugly. All of that wiiiiide. And I thought I didn't like the profiles in the OVA! The CG segments are fine, though; really good for CG. Doesn't look horribly out of place or anything.

I read somewhere that they were aiming for the anime to be somewhat of a re-imagination of the OVA. I personally didn't like the OVA that much, since I was never fond of the whole schoolgirl aspect that suddenly came into play. Hopefully they can deal with it better in the anime. Except I felt like it wasn't dealt well at all in this episode. The pacing was too quick . . . ? Could just be my bias, though.
At least they're establishing more of a connection with the "Otherworld," it seems. Not that subtle imo, though.

BRS getting pummeled. Huh.
Give me my Black Gold Saw! :D And not just her giant eye.
Honestly, I still wish there was some Black Matagi or Black Devil Girl over the new characters that were introduced for the OVA/anime.

I'm wondering who will sing the ED. I'm really hoping they kept Gomu on board, but I highly doubt it. It would've been even better if they used Gomu's cover of Black Rock Shooter for the OP, too, besides the fact that it'd seem extremely out of place lol. /all my bias. Sounded like a Miku Append (or two? I can't tell) was used, and I don't like it as much as the original. Oh well.

Overall -- all right episode.

I doubt that any one had as high of expectations for this show then I did, and I'm now somewhat frustrated since I don't think it met the rediculous hype I was giving it. I still thought it was better then most of the stuff this season but I'm a bit worried now. The OVA's action sequences were some of the coolest I've seen in a long time so hopefully the TV series will have more of that going forward.

I started watching...
I got a feeling similar to when I started Mahou Shoujo Magica Madoka.

But it stopped really quickly.

The OVA had some question... like WTF is going on with the main Character and Black Rock Shooter and I doubt giving the answer at the first episode was really wise.
I felt like the whole thing was rushed and their friendship was so fucking sudden it doesn't get to me at all.

The Blond girl is the most interesting character and she's not that interesting... It's like I know where this is going.

I never really liked the OVA but this is worst let's see if this is getting fix... or not.

FLAME me if you want but.....
I love how SO many are HATING on this show.
SOME of you are BASHING this show based on either the lack of
using the art from the original Music Video or saying there isn't enough action!
These arguments DO NOT take the original song lyrics into account.

I think some of you should ACTUALLY READ the lyrics of the original song....

The story in the OVA and here in this series are shooting
for the SPIRIT of the SONG more than anything else.
And that's as it should be!!
Anything else would be just a waste of time, in my opinion.
The writers must believe that the only way to do
that is to parallel the "real world" and the BRS world.
The OVA gave it a shot and wasn't too bad!!
I am willing to wait and see what happens in this series, but for me.....so far so good!!

I think a lot of people were expecting a continuation from the OVA (like myself).

Honestly, I couldn't care less about the "real world" art - I think it's almost a metaphor in itself that, YEAH, real life can be pretty damn boring at times XD

The dialogue is my only problem with the anime so far.

That's not going to happen.

The reason why it comes out each week is because the series is completed, and has been distributed. They don't animate an episode each week, and turn it in the night before it's supposed to be on.

This is how simulcasting works; places like Crunchyroll, The Anime Network, etc., have the episode, add subtitles, and air it at the same time as it’s airing in Japan – for example - Bleach is aired on Crunchyroll at 1:30AM, as it's being aired on TV-Tokyo at 6:30 in Japan.

It’s also how episodes are leaked early; like when someone found an English simulcast episode of One Piece on a Funimation server, and shared it a day earlier before it was set to be aired. Or when the last 6 minutes of a Code Geass episode was leaked onto Youtube 4 days before it's official airing in Japan.

They really should of just used the art/animation from the OVA. The faces seem kinda stretched out and moeblobby. And the CG seems kinda overdone making the CG character's movements seem kinda awkward.

Also how the hell do you get bullied by a girl is a freaking wheel chair? Bitch please I would of curb stomped that little disabled freak.

Shouldn't BRS be dead from all that "blood" loss? And getting impaled straight through her torso usually equals instant death.

I think most of us just watch this for the BRS world scenes (at least im doing it) and the real world and its "story" it's just a plus. I dont know why are you saying that the animation is bad(im taliking about BRS world only); at least to me looks really good (maybe it isnt fate/zero ufotable level animation, whatever).
This is not an anime for all, if u expect slice of life, shoujo ai, madoka like-story or eomething, it`s the wrong place for you.
I read that some people love supercelll and hate miku, Why is that? at least be more considerate, half of the popularity was thanks to her voice and the other half the awesome music.
Again, this sould be all about the brs world fight scenes (and obviously, Kana Hanazawa). I hope that in the future they put InsaneBRS and other characters, that would be awesome.
Right now, the only interest that i have in the normal world is, why's human Chariot (dont remember her rl name) is treating DM like a slave. Looking forward to next episode.

PD: Kana Hanazawa <3... oh and watch the second version of the original BRS song(its really amazing) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A9KFkemlYiA

I have a feeling that Ordet's going to get it right this time.

Unlike the OVA, this episode made me feel some emotional attachment between the characters. I actually cared about how Yomi and Mato are forming their relationship. In the OVA, it was bland and not the least bit engaging, but here, there's actually some friction between the two, and this is just the first episode!

One thing I really liked about the episode, however, is that the animators are beginning to explore the different facets of huke's art. I don't know if anyone's noticed it, but there's a sense of gothic creepiness to huke's original drawings, so I think this anime is going to multiply that tenfold. A good amount of nightmare fuel was poured into scene when Mato visited Yomi as well as Black Rock Shooter fighting the giant mechanical spider. I haven't been this creeped out by an anime for a while. It's 11:00 p.m. as I write this. It's not like I needed the sleep anyway.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I'm really looking forward to the next 7 episodes. The OVA was a complete letdown, but I can definitely see a good future for this anime.

I personally loved the character designs, I liked them more than the ones on the OVA.
A thing that I liked about this episode was how fast it advanced! It was like the creators saying "Oh, we're not going to present you the characters because you probably already know them! Whatever!".
Also, I don't watch this anime for the "Real World" scenes, nor the "BRS World" scenes, I'm watching it for the whole thing, It's not like the anime is divided in two!
The BRS World is like an expansion for the Real World, think about it, without the BRS World this episode (I can't talk about the whole anime for obvious reasons!) would be just a drama (with a good story imo), but without the Real World the BRS World would be plot-less!
Now, talking from an in-universe perspective I think that the BRS World is an epic way to represent the relationships between the characters.
Also, the ED was ok! I would like to hear a human version of Black Rock Shooter, but whatever! I guess Miku is ok!

I like it so far, helps that I didn't have much expectations. That and it's filling in for some of the other series I've dropped like Guilty Crown, Senki Zesshou Symphogear, and Aquarion EVOL. Getting close to dropping a few more.

Action is neat and stylish, though it's shining less than brawls compared to the OAV.

Only strange thing is that everytime BRS gets herself damaged pretty badly, Hawaiian Blue (the drink) squirts out of her. So blood is being saved for the blu-ray release?

So begins the tale of lesbians and ridiculusly well animated fight scenes.. I really liked the integration of cg in this one; goes in really naturally and not out of place unlike most other anime. Makes it look really dynamic and cool. By the end of the series, someone should just crop out all the action scenes and compile them into one. I'd rather watch that, than watch this to be honest. Though I do think they did the lesbo scenes better than what they did in the ova, still rather pointless and predictable though... Hope they can make something out of it.. and hope they can stay consistant with the high quailty fight scenes (I somehow doubt it though..)

I'm more in agreement with all the comments about this first episode being worse than the OVA so far from an art/animation standpoint and because of the rushed so called 'slice of life/school drama' elements. The Ova was darker and truer to the original vocaliod character designs, but lacked a developed plot, something that has surely spawned all the disapointment with this first ep., which long time vocaloid character design fans have been looking forward to. Orix comment probably points to reason for this particular failure, but the general difference in art direction is squarely the fault of the director.

I am in agreement about enjoying some of the action scenes. The over the top violence presented in the 'madoka like' Cgi world was indeed sadistically exaggerated and somewhat of an interesting allegory to the pain of going through adolescence. I'm not going to write the show completely off yet though. I think if the writing can begin filling in the lack of character development and come up with some new plot features, while weaving or here's a thought, even combining the imaginary world with reality, perhaps incorporating some sort of meaningful moral element, like in mind Mind Game for example, this story could still recover from this very weak first episode. There are many different ways in which this series could still stun the disbelievers, but then again It is yet to be seen if Yoshioka, Shinobu can develop as interesting of a plot design as Yuasa sensei. I'm not going to count him out just yet, he's worked on some interesting series but of course Okada, Mari's writing is a mixed bag. The first episode seemed to have a Rozen Maiden feel to it for some reason, but lacked it's wit that made the dolls personalities interesting. I'm gonna keep watching to see what happens next. *Wink*

If you haven't watched Cat Soup yet, then sure you should get on that and come back to this when you've at least seen the Ova and a few of the many very well drawn vocaliod characters. Alright, so I actually went on and watched the first episode. It's really not as bad as people are making it out to be. Here's what I thought about it.

For one, I do agree that the designs of the "real world" characters are a bit worse than the OVA. I'm still not sure why they chose to change the designs, but they did. They still work for who the characters are, but I kinda miss Mato's old design. She looked a lot cuter. The "Other World" is much better in comparison. I think BRS's new design looks somewhat refreshing to me (though I have to say, the Game's design is probably the best.) The only issue I have with the Other World character designs is Dead Master's veil on her head. It's really out of place.

Story wise, it has potential. Most of what happened was similar to the OVA with minor changes. Watching the characters as they go through Junior High actually reminded me a bit of my time in middle school. Kagari really reminded me of that "mean girl" from my grade school days. She's evil and doesn't try to sugar coat anything. She really makes the perfect villain, which BRS kinda needs to get the story going. The school counselor is particularly suspicious as well. She seems to know exactly what's going on in her own world and in the other world as well. I'm far more convinced that Miss Saya is Black Gold Saw, considering that they're both "overseeing" the situations in both worlds. That and Black Gold Saw is fitting for Mamiko Noto's voice.

It seems to me that they put way more effort in the other world than the real world, animation wise. Hopefully we'll see a balance between the two soon.

Other than that, it shows potential, but you have to give it a chance.

My god, was this rushed.... It's almost as if they tried to do the whole OVA in 24 minutes while including a whole new character to the bunch.
While the OVA lacked plot-wise, the animation and the action-sequences were great. Here... the animation took a huge step back. The character's moves were jerky and awkward, the hair looked like something from Shiki (but much worse) and they overdid it with CGI. I don't mind CGI, as long as it's done right.

My expectations has been lowered.

Vocaloid has nothing to do with BRS, besides supercell using the program to have Miku sing the BRS song, which happened after ryo (of supercell) saw a 2007 BRS illustration posted by HUKE on his blog and pivix. HUKE came up with BRS and the artwork all on his own, without being influenced by Vocaloid.

Huke, a Japanese illustrator, designed a female character and posted an image of her on his Blog and Pixiv on December 26, 2007. This illustration of the character (given the name Black★Rock Shooter) inspired an upcoming producer named Ryo, who was already a known songwriter on Nico Nico Douga and also lead member of Supercell. Ryo requested Huke to illustrate for the song he would write, as well as using the character within the video. Thus the character, Black★Rock Shooter, was the focus of the PV and song of the same name. It was posted on Nicovideo June 13, 2008. It was produced by Ryo using the Vocaloid Hatsune Miku, and completed in collaboration with Huke, who is now a member of Supercell.

Crypton (creators of Vocaloid) has also stated that BRS has no relation with Vocaloid, nor Miku.

They could have done another one or two OVA than this. Ugh.

Seriously, the character designs are just embarrassingly bad and I'm not even gonna comment on other areas. Still gonna watch because I'm interested on other characters that didn't appear in OVA.
