The only criticisms I have are that Kenshin's voice is a little too stiff and vanilla, and the background music is a little too cheesed up and lacks the nuance of the original series, where you could really feel Kenshin's pondering and introspective moments, as well as the feelings of Kaoru. There isn't much hope for the music direction at this point, but I hope the seiyuu plans to evolve their skill and evoke more of the goofy aloofness of Kenshin in the original series or Vash in the original Trigun.

As someone who watched and loved first iteration of this show multiple times, this felt off. Slight changes in story but not different enough to distinguish it from original. Animation is not bad at all, but story is apparently going to be just the reinterpretation of the first one. This makes it a no go for me. There's nothing new to be seen it seems and over all it feels like American remake of the "Old Boy" the movie. Capable but in comparison to original a flop.

Am guessing people who haven't seen the original will like it. It is a good story after all.

I don't like how they showed off that Kenshin is the Battosai at the very start. If they were gonna do it, I'd at least wish they hadn't shown Saito. All in all, a decent first episode. Kaoru's design looks very nice. It looks very clean. Kenshin's voice felt off, but that might just be due to being too used to the previous anime and the Live-Action version. Kinda wish he wasn't always in serious mode though. He's supposed to be a goofball, the very definition of a hidden badass. With 24 episodes, I wonder how far they're gonna cover it. Just before the Kyoto Arc is my guess.

Also, of all the things, how does this keep getting more projects? Especially after what happened with Act Age.

The Original Anime made a lot of alterations and even added some fillers in the Tokyo Arc.
This Remake is , for now , more faithful.

But indeed , it won't feel that much different until they adapt the Jinchuu Arc , which never got adapted and should be here in the potential 3rd Season.

The Original Anime and the Manga also start by revealing that Kenshin was Battosai.
As for Saito , Watsuki and the Director are trying to add foreshadowing , to avoid getting new characters popping-up from nowhere again and again. (They are also foreshadowing Tomoe in this episode.)

The Hokkaido Manga was already running when Watsuki got arrested , and it was selling quite well.

It's just a little bit after that Keishi Otomo started to do the 2 Finals Live-Action Movies , to complete his story.
Rurouni Kenshin has always been popular in Japan , and after such a long time , finally seeing the Jinchuu Arc getting adapted re-launched the hype around the franchise.
Doing a Remake of the Anime can only be beneficial for everyone involved.

OSTs are bad, abysmally bad. I literally cringed listening to the opening song. The ending is.... okayish I guess. The old anime's OSTs are just superior. Kinda disappointed they don't at least remix the old OSTs too, I really don't dig the new OSTs

The anime itself is quite mediocre, but it's faithfully adapted so there's at least hope. The animation itself.... I don't know, the old one doesn't have good animation either but it has good atmosphere. I guess we just have to see where it goes.

Also it seems like I'm the minority who actually likes the new voice for Kenshin? He is now sounding like a man instead of.... idk the original. Also Mayo Suzukaze at some point just sounds really like a tired grandma in The Reflection, so I'd rather have the new VA than her at this point. I like how Rie sounds really similar to the old VA of Kaoru so no problem at all about her.

Kind of bothered me that Kenshin's eyes turned blue instead of yellow in Battosai-mode, but oh well overall it was great.

The Original Anime altered a lot of material in the early episodes , and it never completely adapted the Manga , doing fillers instead.
So if it doesn't bother you to experience the same story a little bit differently , you definitely should try this Remake.
The completely new content won't appear before the 3rd Season of this Remake tho , if it goes up to it.
Yeah, I remember the first TV series didn’t cover everything. Might be something worth considering when it gets there

That was only an artistical choice of the Original Anime tho.
Canonically , Kenshin has deep purple eye , no matter if he's focused or not.

There was only very low chances that they would follow the same artistical direction for that , especially since they want to be more faithful to the Manga.
And actually , even the Original Anime didn't used it everytime , but only on a few occasions.

But it was a small feature that a lot of viewers ended up loving , which is why you can see it in most Fan-Arts.

Never watched or read the series but ofc know about it since it's a big classic so always wanted some sort of Brotherhood adaptation so went blind on this and it was pretty good, it didn't felt like a 90's anime, it's well modernized, opening is pretty good and catchy, art and animation was on point and the story is definitely good, if it r eally just keeps getting better like most says, this will be a great one, and i'm also positively surprised to see most comments online, even on Reddit, judging the series by it's quality instead of "you know what".

This series is one of the most important work of art that developed my childhood, so yeah I'm going to act as if I'm a boomer here.

Things to complain:
1) The OP. I understand if they want to create some sort of a new feel for the series, but it really doesn't suit the romantic vibe of the story. Kenshin is cool as fck, yes, but it's not about the Kenshin that is cool as fck and down to earth. It's about the Kenshin that tries to find his humanity back WHILE being cool as fck. I don't care if it's a good song (it's fine, to me, as a song), but as an OP to this story, this anime, it's a total failure.
2) The 2nd BGM as Kenshin meets Kaoru. What's with the half arse? this scene isn't supposed to be a SOL anime character first meeting, and even in some of those the OST are way better. I can either blame the composer here, or the sound director, or just poor overall direction from the general director. Remember: even if this is an old series and its expected viewers are old series fans, one should still approach any adaptation of any remake series as if they're trying to tell a new story.
3) fast pacing is fine. but don't miss the core of the story, please. also screenplay... too oversimplifying.
4) I was fine with Saitou Souma's voice during the trailer, but now hearing him in full as Kenshin, Nobunaga (Shimazaki) would have been better. Especially since his voicework as a rurouni has been proven to be successful in story and market.
5) Also yeah, I love Taka8, but this just feels like the standard Taka8 doing damsel in distress but still feminine enough woman. I like her voice, but this is she, this isn't "Kaoru"  (tbh, I just feel like the director isn't a Kaoru guy lol. when Kaoru is principal to Kenshin's character development).
6) nvm. the screenplay is horrible. show, don't tell. instead this screenplay... heuh.
7) ok nvm the sound work in overall is a disappointing in its usage.
8) I don't care how smooth the action scenes is. SHOW, don't tell. especially since this is a remake of an old manga.

yeah... this is going to be suffering for me. I'm going to pretend this remake doesn't exist at the end of this anime. and I think I'm going to have to make sure any of my friends who watch this watch the og series, instead.
shit anime. even if I try to remove my "boomer" glasses, it's still shit. lack of love, lack of work, in-animations even at supposedly sakuga scenes. just horrible 1st episode.
whoever is in charge of the anime committee should be fired for letting this happen.

This episode is worse than the original's first episode in just about everything, but the animation and sticking closer to the manga. I'm personally not keen on the new artstyle, but that is just my preference and I seem to be in the minority here.

The directing, pacing, soundtrack, etc. however are things done much better in the original. This version is unable to replicate the same emotional reactions and feels like a paint by the number remake.

Including the voice-work. Which is alright ut not great. Kaoru sounds a little too similar to Megumi in my opinion and Kenshin's VA just doesn't fit him at all. And I say this as someone who originally opposed the female VA the original had. Why couldn't they get Takeru Satoh, or someone that sounds like him? He was perfect as Kenshin. This new actor sounds way too young. Let's just hope he can grow into the role as the series progresses.

To conclude this was alright maybe a 6/10, when it could be much more.

On a side note, why is Gohei portrayed like a giant? He is said to be like six foot tall, but looks at least ten.

Well... What can I say about it this launched... it was... a "lukewarm" episode ( I think). Before starting to watch the new adaptation version, I chose to do an "adventure: I reread all the manga, I rewatched the flashback OVAs plus the Reflection version, and also I have read some manga special chapters like the one about the first meeting between Shishio and Yumi, so, yeah, I just created a big hype to start this new adaptation but my enthusiasm wilted...
The beginning of the epi was nice showing the Kenshin fighting over Saitou: it worked to provide a little hype to us seeing that duo fight again, in the present time, and at the same time it is a nostalgic intro for the vet fans, it showed too the battles will be a "raw" thing(without censure what brings a nice atm for the battle scenes); so, yeah, it was good ones first minutes, however, when Kenshin started speaking (btw I didn't like from the voice's choice, I guess the classic choice by actress would be better) and the dialogues have been happening, the lack of idiot classic touches of humor broke the feeling, the interaction between Kenshin and Kaoru (and us) was very dense, very dull, the manga' stupid jokes worked for create a charisma for the Kenshin and create a funny contrast between the swordsman of the tales and the real thing, but the staff did not it, seems like they wanna do a more "cool" Kenshin, I dunno.
I rewatched the first epi from the anime 94s and it has more... "charming" compared to the new anime: the old one had a nice OST placed into good timing unlike the new one that missing something to give an "energy" for that dull dialogues and robotic reactions, but the battle themes were nice. The first op is okay, I liked more the first one from the other anime, but in the first end I still prefer the old first one, I think it is hard to beat Tactics kek And... well, it was my first impression: just an okay adaptation; maybe the fault to have been like this was the director's choice, I guess it was pretty stupid idea chosen an almost newbie in director to work in a TV show with a big name, I mean, the director only worked in the full direction in Strike Blood so.... yeah LMAO

As expected, this new version lacks the charm, seriousness and gravity that characterized its 90s counterpart. Not to mention the rushed nature of storytelling that makes genuine immersion difficult. It's the case for nearly every modern remake of an older property.

But it is watchable though, and still much better than most of what the industry offers these days.

The animation and voice acting are great, but that's about it. I didn't like the opening or the ending, the soundtrack isn't anything to write home about either. Obviously from a technical point of view this is way better than the first adaptation, but at the same time it feels sterile in comparision. I was really excited about having a faithful adaptation but this kind of feels like it got the generic shounen treatment.
Yeah, that's just how it was in the manga. If i remember correct, Watsuki was not a fan of the changes from the 96 series, so they're gonna stick to the source material. It'll be a bit slow at first and wont be as goofy as the 96 version, but hopefully they get the serious and emotional moments right and the make the action look really good. OST is gonna be a big miss though, because the 96 one was gorgeous.

He returned in a big way with a good animation that I like but it seems that certain art that characterized the 96 anime will be lost, this can be seen with the op and ed

In terms of music, they should have made a new version of OP 1 from 1996, as they did with Hunter x Hunter 2011 accompanied by the new animation, but ED would have put a more serious rock style and it is seen that the soundtrack lost that characteristic sound that it only had the 96 anime that when you listen to it automatically you say Rurouni kenshin is a shame

Also, what I could see in the decisions with the animation is that some precentasion was lost in the attacks instead of attacking and breaking his fingers so that he does not use the sword again as in 96, he only sees the attack to the head, I know they are adapting the manga as such but I hope they don't take away the lethality of the important fights

This series seems like it will be darker than the first. (Even though that had some serious undertones to it.) The intro was cool and so was the end theme.

One thing about the classic Rurouni Kenshin anime was the art, storytelling and music. I hope this new series will live up to it.

Yes.

This Season will most probably stop at around Episode 32 of the Original Anime.
There is no official confirmation about multiples Seasons yet , but the chances are quite high.

However , it's not really a Remake , but a re-interpretation.
The Original Anime had altered a lot of content , and this one tells the story of the Manga faithfully , but with a different tone , way more serious.

3 Seasons of 24 Episodes is more believable.
Aniplex wants to adapt Hokkaido-hen tho , so there'll probably be even more.
