No it doesnt work like that in that world where 80% of people have quirks even villains. Even those having quirks dont guarantee being able to do anything against a monster. So how could a powerless child do that?
That's too idealistic to think he could do anything just by the power of courage and determination. Props for All Might for staying somewhat realistic with that.
Thank god it didnt go the Flamenco way. :>

In a world when 80% of the population has superpower and not all of them can become a superhero, there is no way a boy without power can become a hero.

Deku got buff. Well, buff enough for his small frame, it was somewhat realistic (considering this is about superheroes and shit).

Swallowing All Might's hair for his DNA, wonder if it'll work?

Deku got excited over talking to a girl, really? Also I didn't know that his hair was supposed to be curly, I thought it was just unkempt.

OST reminds me of something from Superman.

I think there has to be some kind of condition on the power transfer: something like the current user has to specifically want to give his power in order for it to work. Otherwise way too many people could've accidentally inherited One for All haha

Thats not the point. At least not mine. My point is that Izuku got his powers as a gift. I already know that he has to train to fully control his new powers, thats nothing new. So, no matter how hard he has to train, he still got them as a gift.

I thought your point was that BnHA has less impact because of the above. I felt like there's a chance that you would change your mind if you saw him in action if you haven't yet, but I'm assuming you did since you said you already know. I'm not telling you that you're wrong but I just disagree. Even though his powers are a gift, he still struggles with them in a way that will make him seem quirkless in many situations because of the serious drawbacks his quirk has. In fact, most of the time, he even relies more on his intellect than his quirk due to said drawbacks. I don't see how that has any less impact than if he were to develop his own quirk/stay quirkless because essentially, he's relying on his own thinking/observation abilities, which were there before he even obtained the quirk, in order to control his gift properly.

I don't know what it is, but, three episodes in, Boku no Hero Academia has yet to grab me and I just think the show is okay right now. Actually, a big reason is probably the fact that I don't have any affinity for Izuku so far and I'm hoping that changes soon. I do, at least, like Ochako based on her brief introduction.

Someone already answered this I think.
In addition to needing a proper body so as not to self-destruct, the manga goes into it a bit more later on, well past where this adaptation will stop, but basically:

The power has to be willingly transferred by the user (All Might in this case) so no, you couldn't just say steal one of his hairs while he sleeps and get the power.

Establishing characters and the world is not wasted time. The action scenarios and such will mean jack if the characters and the world they are in are not properly established.

Don't worry though there will be action soon andthe anime will end with a major arc that sets the tone for future big events.

The thing is, that in this case one episode would be more than enough to estabilish character of protagonist, since all we have for now is a blend of generic seigi no mikata and generic underdog. And even the long-running shounen series like e.g. Naruto could do a better job in one episode, so yeah two episodes of Boku no Hero Academia were practically wasted.

Gotta say this show improved a lot this episode. The opening is pretty dope as well.
Although I have to say I feel like the Boku no Hero Academia world kind of has nothing to offer, seems to me like the other heroes are really weak from what we saw in the previous episode. Kinda lame that we have already seen the best hero in the series All Might. Also the action in the series is pretty average. The thing they have done really well in this show so far is the relationship between Deku and All Might. Apart from that it's a very average show.

I'm loving the OST, It's just amazing. Deku's training scenes were really well done.
Loved the part showing how Deku's eyes were fixed on the far future of becoming as great as All Might.

Ya at this pace they can't go very far into the plot. But the adaptation is good I guess.

His Quirk is one which is passed down from person to person, getting stronger each time. It's explained in more detail later in the manga.

To those who hate shounen anime or expect a surprise element in shounen, just stop it. Better for you to either drop it or simply don't watch it. There is no such thing called surprise element in shounen. Perhaps, there is, but just a few names. Let me explain to you : Almost shounen anime is full of cliche. Yes, that's the truth. Perhaps, there is a few exception, but not too many. As you may know, Shounen anime has 3 elements in it, which are friendship, never give up, and train hard to achieve the goal. It's basically created to shounen fans or those who like to see a MC struggling, but never give up. A MC who is train hard, in order to achieve his/her dream. That's the meaning of shounen. So for you people who don't like shounen, I repeat again, don't expect a surpise element. It's better for you (and for us who love shounen) to avoid it and simply don't watch it.

This was so by the book generic cheese that it literally hurt watching. Unlike ConRevo, this show does not ask any questions nor explore the concept of society via superhero narrative. The narrative is just THERE for sake of one crybaby NotNaruto to tryhard into greatness as a way to teach young kids about how hard work is rewarding, alongside discovering how SPECIAL he is, etc, etc, etc. Its such a derivative rehash of shonen formula cliches that you can literally predict the scenes before they will happen.

I would actually disagree with this. I think the first and second episode do excellent jobs of providing the foundation of a social commentary through hero society.

To be fair, the third episode and the first major arc is a fairly straight hotblooded protag narrative, but you can already see hints of the main storyline's commentary on the hero society in the first few episodes.

Characters like Mt. Lady and Kamui show that many heroes are in it for the glory and fame, not for the actually saving people part, as Deku and All Might are. The fact that it took a little Quirkless boy to kickstart a rescue mission for a kidnapped middle schooler WHO IS LITERALLY BEING DROWNED AND POSSESSED in front of a crowd of bystanders illustrates how complacent and coldhearted people have grown with these larger than life hero characters around. Especially with many bystanders giving casual commentary on an objectively scary and bad situation with no one doing anything.

Some would even argue that BnHA is an allegory for overcoming a disability in life, since Deku is part of the disadvantaged minority in his society.

My point is, is that the first couple of episodes and the characters you will meet in the coming episodes lay plenty of ground for a deeper, more intelligent show and story to come about society, courage and true heroism, not just a straight shounen anime.

This is a very bad argument. Erased is not a long running shonen battle manga. Anime Pacing should be different because they have completely different story structure and manga pacing.

Stop making excuses. Attack on Titan (another monthly manga) covered more than 70 pages in 24 minutes. It's dialogue heavy similar to BnhA and yet you don't see it chopping the first chapter into two episodes. The pacing is bad and there's nothing you can do to convince me to think otherwise.

Good points, but I think I like the pacing, simply because what BnHA excels at are full page splashes, over the top reaction faces and high-tension scenes. I enjoy the panel-by-panel adaptation because it allows the viewer to linger in these emotional moments or enjoy the humorous reactions. It's not everyone's jam, lots of people like more action-filled fast moving stories, but I think BnHA's high points are all emotional pauses that are built over highly dense, emotional content. Bones is doing a good job of adapting (a bit slowly for some) to give the proper impact, so when that big splash page that made us manga-readers cry comes along, it makes you cry some more to the tune of swelling violins.

Yeah but the show establishes that without quirk there's a limit to what you can do. You can be pretty smart but if a quirkless body can't stand the power of an enemy, there's not really a lot to do. Also, the test that comes in the next episode shows that you need means to at least inmobilize an enemy. Without a quirk, doing that in a believable fashion seems hard to do.

But hey, at least MC has spirit. Now he has power.

Academia would made more impact if Izuku would be Quirkless but still manage to overshadow people with quirk. But hey, i could as well go another way: He trained 10 months, in that time he could have discovered his own quirk and show that what the doctor said to him back then was the rule but not the exception.
Thus my problem is not Izuku having a quirk in the first place, my problem with it is the "Power as a simple gift" that is NOT his own power in the first place but from someone else. Yeah, as All Might said, his power would not even be his own power, but we are talking about Izuku here.
But hey, if you like it that way, more power to ya.
I dont dislike Academia but i dont like it either, its just "oh well" until now. I just think that the "Power as a simple gift" thing doesnt work imo and doesnt have any impact especially after his shown spirit in this episode. Whatever.

BTW: I dont understand why Fai is getting so much shit thrown his way for her opinion.

It's unfortunate, but the reason why the "Quirkless Hero" storyline is NOT BnHA's story is actually due to editor meddling. The original concept of the series by the author was actually a story about a smart Quirkless college graduate using his detailed study and analysis of heroes with Quirks to beat villans with Quirks.

However, the author already had 2 serializations that were axed VERY quickly, despite his fairly good art and storytelling. The editors were probably afraid that BnHA would move too slow or lose the young demo without a main character with a cool power, so convinced the author to change to what BnHA is now to avoid another early axing....

I still think the story is executed very well, and Deku's Batman-y study/powerless abilities still get some time to shine, but I too would have loved a interesting powerless hero beats powered supervillans story as well...

Pretty sure it's been long established since Episode 1 that he's not a wimp and is just very emotional and strong willed but regardless of that, there are things there that have been a hook

1. The premise - Superhero World etc
2. Izuku - Perfectly exemplifies the type of MC that you just want to root for
3. The mystery surrounding All Might

Just to name a few

Well if only people stop obsessing over "subverting tropes" every time a new popular show comes out, and analyze the show carefully and logically, there are plenty of highlighting features in the first episode itself.

So, I will like to point out what this reddit guy has to say on his first impressions abt the show(sometimes I feel redditfags are more logical than MAL people):-

Remember that guy has only seen the anime, and he realized what the show is all about later on in the series.

1. The premise - Superhero World etc

Done to death and in most of other cases way better.
Why should I watch this when I can just rewatch Samurai Flamenco in all of it's glory? At least that one is very meta in its approach towards portraying the evolution of superhero/tokusatsu genre.
Why should I watch this when I can just rewatch Tiger&Bunny and it's brilliant narrative on commercialization of superhero comic books?[

Where is the hook? Because in the world where we have MCU, just being "hey we are about superheroes" is no longer enough. Especially if everything else is same as in every other shonen manga.
And? Pretty much everything you can think of has been done to death already, but you expecting to see something that is a game changer after only 3 episodes/roughly 3 chapters of a long running shounen manga is just preposterous

Heck, the post that I tagged you with did a good job reading between the lines of the story and pretty much hit the nail right on the head and even then there's a lot more to it than just that

And also, using SamuMenco and Tiger and Bunny as a means of comparison here is irrelevant because for one, both of those shows are not only short running made for seasonal television type of shows, but because of this, the stories are planned out ahead of time/are fixed unlike a long running shounen as I stated earlier, which is required to have pacing of this sorts

I don't know, so far All I wanted to do was punch him in the face. A predictable idealist goodie two shoes tryhard who cries a lot and teaches the viewer how not giving up is important to achieve your goals.
And what's wrong with that? You want a MC that gives up in life, lets everyone walk all over him and go around living with no sense of motivation or goals whatsoever?

Yes this is a standard quality in shounen manga, but it's how its handled is what matters.....The mangaka could have easily have Deku follow the standard formula and be an idiot with no common sense whatsoever but instead we got a intelligent and highly analytic kid that has to work hard for everything that he hopes to achieve regardless of what is handed to him

Also, I will never understand how a kid that has been looked down upon, treated very badly and had his dream crushed due to a very harsh reality is seen as a crybaby when his idol pretty much tells him that his determination and heart has allowed him to make his dream come true....Yet alone be labeled as a "tryhard"

What mystery?
A world where Quirks are obtained by birth yet All Might, the strongest hero ever had his given to him...How does such a quirk even exist? He said that it passes on and nurtures abilities from one person to another. What are the specifics to this? Who was the first holder of AFO? What happened to said holder? How did All Might get this quirk?

And that's just some of things that one can wonder about his sub-plot alone

This.

And It is true, but not all elements are omnipresent in all shounen, and yes there are some with a lot of surprise elements, and very developed stories, and even ideological stuff. What I think is very unique in BNHA, is that doesn't try to give the spectator all It wants, and sometimes touches very political and ideological stuff in some parts of the Manga, when most of other Shounen just center the development just on the universe of the story and certainly, doen't want to risk themselves in issues out of the actual context of the series. I think that some Shounens have a very strong background in the story, and this is one of them.

This is an adaption of a WEEKLY SHOUNEN JUMP MANGA THAT IS CURRENTLY AT 84+ CHAPTERS!

Saying anything about the story or the characters or the setting after witnessing only 2 chapters animated of ANYTHING ever is simply an uninformed and ignorant opinion.
And "OH IT'S AN ANIME AND SHOULD BE JUDGED AS BLAH BLAH" is a ridiculous claim because that is making the wrong assumption that all anime exist in a vacuum.

It is an adaption first and foremost and it is not the job of an adaption to explain or present things that are 20 chapters down the line at the very beginning just because a bunch of animeonly watchers are bitching about how not every single plot development and character development is being shoved into their face in the first 3 episodes.

You are in for the long run. If you are not interested in spending the time to find out how things will go then why in the world did you ever decide to watch a manga adaption of a long running manga?

Because god forbid the Shonen series that runs in Shonen Jump magazine be a Shonen show.

We get it, you don't like mainstream battle Shonen's, those that DO can recognize that three episodes have been among the best execution in the genre. If the whole series is this quality it could contend with giants like Hajime no Ippo and Hunter x Hunter in terms of sheer satisfying Battle-Shonens.

And yes, cheesy lines and perseverance winning the day are tropes of 99% of Shonen Jump comics--those are the kind of stories its readers buy the magazine for.

Your critique is like hating a duck for being too good at being a duck. maybe next time, don't bother ordering the duck.

Fantastic osts. Art feels more Triggery but less animation.
Muscle man taking not-pedo pic of crying boy on a rope, somewhere on a deserted beach.
Fast 10 months, nice abs.
Gravity girl, also triggery.
Mechs next.
