There's something satisfying about hitting those sword-wielding guys with DEMOCRACY and FREEDOM. But on a more serious note, these two episodes convinced me to start reading the manga. Loving both the anime and manga so far. |

The answer to being obliterated is to keep charging in apparently...I liked the differences between the strategies of the two forces. Obviously one is vastly superior thus far. Still has a good balance of comedy between to keep it light at times. |

So like, let's see: - The US is EEEEVIIIILLL. - The Empire(which we can compare to the Roman Empire and on a larger & simpler scale, medieval Europe) is EVIIILLL. - The JSDF are simply defenders. - MC is a hardcore otaku which will probably save his haremmettes that from the BAD people within their own land. Of course, this was expected to be a power fantasy and one if not after the 1st episode, then at least after this one, one would be a fool to think otherwise. No problem there. Plenty of us enjoy these after all, if perhaps in varying genres. But what I do find a problem and downright pathetic is that it seems like it's gonna try to tackle topics such a show shouldn't touch with a 10 feet pole. War's not pretty, killing's not pretty and GATE ain't a comedy, nor is it making a parody out of it, it's actually taking itself seriously.. We're just 2 eps in so it might be too early to confirm this but so far, the JSDF' are kind of getting white washed. 120.000 dead and not a single body shown . Okay. As for looking at it from a purely entertaining standpoint. Is a one sided battle really that fun to watch when it's not played for laughs? |

Well, probably its because is a anime? Its impossible one animation have the same heave stuff for the original source, and Gate its one off those with a lot of corpses censored( and the most gore still will come later). I agree with you, but unfortunately, its rare a anime airs on late night, where could be made without censorship.... |

Well, that would be a reasonable excuse for it but sadly, not even completely scorched bodies that wouldn't need to show anything needing to be censored are shown. Even the characters don't react at all seeing that so many died. They may be soldiers and the ones they killed may be the enemy, but it's rather hard not to get at least some reaction from all that killing unless they'd all be hardcore veterans, which I doubt. It's more of a problem that the show's making zero effort to show that killing 120k soldiers really isn't a pretty sight, even if there was no other way around it. A necessary evil should be shown as one, not white washed. Of course, since it's just the 2nd ep, I'll eat my words if GATE proves me that it actually aware of that later on. |

You literally see one guy losing two of his limbs. It's just toned down. It got the feeling they will make 1-2 semi-gory scenes per episode, like in EP1 with Itami killing the soldier and civilian getting his stomach gut, and in EP2 the guy who loses his limbs. There is a possibility that THAT introduction scene that should happen next episode, will be cut for Blu-Rays. It wouldn't surprise me at least. |

This episode was epically bad-ass! Those Japanese military are hardcore OP with their weapons. 100,000 died without losing one!? Crazily awesome! And what's that, a female character will be introduced next episode? Cant wait! |

Definitely more political maneuvering than they showed in the manga at the beginning, specifically on the Empire's side. Makes me ridiculously excited when I remember that the JSDF aren't even using the latest weaponry, and are still boring holes through shields and armor. That and the fact that it's suppose to be 10,000 vs 200,000 odds, and they still beat the crap out of the AOE armies. Still, the toned down blood and gore took a bit of the fun out of the show. The one commander who managed not to get shot when everything around him was getting mowed down was pretty ridiculous, especially since he was the ONLY one out of the entire army who actually managed to get an attack in. You'd think they would just head-shot him as a safety measure, no? Considering how they only just found Tuka, it felt like they were going to drag things on a bit, but since Rory shows up next week, I can't be sure.... |

in4 rape scenes become abduction scenes, not that i wouldn't like it, as i'm sensitive to the matter, but it still would be a pretty big change, and with rori and a later character, rape/nudity/slavery has a good point in their first appearance, so that would be weird to watch. |

Really good episode. It was a good idea to have a good portion of the episode from the "antagonists" perspective. It gives it a little more weight to see that the people the Japan Army are slaughtering aren't one dimensional twats that only kill for the sake of it. You really get a sense of desperation from the front liners when they attack the Defense Force thinking they have it in the bag, just to get decimated minutes later. What doesn't make sense to me is why they decided it was a good idea to attack Japan in the first place though. I thought the premise was kinda lame and just a stupid way to put a slight twist on the whole MMORPG game anime boom so A-1 pictures could make more money, but I stand corrected. The different ways that these different people approach this conflict, from the President of USA to the evil king guy, as well as having some really interesting characters (so far, hopefully it stays that way) makes me think this could be AoTS. And my god, the comedy that the MC brings is priceless. Granted I thought the first episode had better comedy, but this was still on point. |

Tell that to the Okinawans.... Yes I know, I was making a slight joke, hence the :-) symbol. That said, the Japanese and Koreans do have an edge about this. It galls them to know that they need to have US protection. Both are proud countries, but both also realize that they are smaller countries (and I mean land territory wise mostly (40% of the population of both countries can be taken out with 1-3 nuclear bombs (Seoul and Kanto)), and even if they were to develop nuclear weapons (which both could do easily), it wouldn't benefit either country. So there is a little resentment mixed in as well. |

Understood. They are both good peoples, and tough too. ROK Marines are no one to mess around with, and the JASDF ADA I trained with were sharp. What I am REALLY liking about this anime is the interaction of the members of Itami's platoon with each other. They are acting like Soldiers. Also, I noticed the soldiers reacting to the gore and bloodshed around them, and that conveys what they are seeing without the need to splash gore all over the screen. A-1 is doing a great job with this show. |

A-1 is doing a great job with this show. At this point, the Empire has lost five battles in a row - the Ginza incident, the Imperial Army vs the JSDF right after the JSDF came through the gate (not shown, but mentioned), and the three attacks in this round. They haven't tried to negotiate at all. There's that grim scene where Itami and some others are inspecting the battlefield after the battles. They're not celebrating a victory. They're wondering how much more killing it will take to get the Empire to admit defeat. Finally, the Emperor is sending Pina to talk, but it seems more like he wants to get rid of her than negotiate. |

shanimebib said: So it can be said that it's been adapted from either? That is my understanding, though since the manga adapted the novels as well, ultimately everything goes back to the novels. My point above was merely to say that having read the manga after the first episode, I think overdoing the gore at the beginning (which does exist in both) would have turned off some "anime only" fans because they would think this was going to be a hardcore fighting/gore animation. It does have that aspect, but it isn't the only aspect of this series. shanimebib said: A-1 Pictures, as a studio is a huge gamble for me though. Having blasted A-1 in the past, so far I would have to say that they are doing an excellent job adapting things. They added some scenes to give you a better understanding of the MCs personality upfront, which I think was the right decision. They made more explicit some of the politics (I was surprised that they started this episode with 5 minutes of it rather than the battle) that will pay off a little bit down the road. So they are doing the exact opposite of what they did in SAO. They have made it easy for the viewer only to keep up with what is going on. They really are over the hard part, not to say that they can't screw things up from here, but so far very good. |

So he's into little girls? Great... What exactly did he do in Ginza that had so much impact as to make him considered a "hero" anyways? The king obviously have some sort of plan, or he's completely mad. I hope the JDF don't do something stupid like the US did in Western Asia and start giving out modern weaponry to the natives. Granted, they probably don't have a crazy religion like the Muslims do but it still won't be pretty. Since the physical laws of this fantasy land is different and allows the use of magic and such, wouldn't someone from Earth had thought to try to study and take advantage of that world's resources already? Man, these Japanese needs to start thinking more like the US, no wonder they're so weak. Years of US military sanctions has turned them into a bunch of pussies. |

Granted, they probably don't have a crazy religion like the Muslims do but it still won't be pretty. That wasn't the failure of the US in Iraq. The failure was not to co-opt the Bathist party. Had Bush done that then the invasion would have been a smashing success. The ironic thing is that Bush's failure wasn't his desire to be a dictator, but rather his naive idealism. MrNTR said: Since the physical laws of this fantasy land is different and allows the use of magic and such, wouldn't someone from Earth had thought to try to study and take advantage of that world's resources already? Man, these Japanese needs to start thinking more like the US, no wonder they're so weak. Years of US military sanctions has turned them into a bunch of pussies. Uhm, if the laws are different, it would take years to understand them. Japan has only had access to the gate for 3 months. You are overestimating the ability of science to deal with the unknown. |

Aoi076 said: this series, this is what will happened if the American choose wrong person to become their president. It would make no difference. The Japanese really see no difference between the Democrats and Republicans. They use the US as the generic "bad guy" because it is easier than using China (which has far more attention in the manga). Seriously, people who try to score political points off an animation are idiots. No, idiots have more common sense. They are the pond scum that a cheap strainer can skim off the top of a pool. |
