I wish the sequel will be about the third-generation tanks. That would be fun and I wanna see Chouno Ami's tank in action.

You'd only need more than that if you wanted to follow the storyline as well.

I wish the sequel will be about the third-generation tanks.

I have seen a lot of people say this. But that is not what I would like to see.

It was DURING World War II that people discovered the optimal design for a
tank through trial and error. This involved a lot of tragedy for tank crews as
well as a lot of lost battles.

By the end of the war, the basic design had been pretty much figured out.
As a result, pretty much any post-WWII tank that you see looks similiar to
the others. (I know that many of you experts with keen eyes will disagree.)

A thing that made GuP really accesible to non-tank-experts was that their
team made use of a very wide range of tank designs. This made it very easy
for us to identify them. And of course the crazy color schemes helped too,
for the first few episodes.

So I think that it would be less attractive to have a spinoff anime based on
post-WWII tanks. Yes, I know that some of you would greatly enjoy it.
But I think that the potential viewer base would be smaller.

My own preference would be to have a spinoff anime based on World War I
and immediately-post-WWI tanks. There was a huge variety in their designs.
That was because, at that time, nobody had any correct concept of how a
tank should be designed.

There is a natural place for such a spinoff series as a "prequel" to GuP. After
all, we know that there are some of the older characters in GuP who we know
were part of Senshado a long time ago. So I would really enjoy seeing them
fighting each other in those earlier models of tanks.

Shiho Nishizumi is the mother of Miho and Maho. You may recall seeing a
beautiful painting of a British Mark IV tank in her home. The Mark IV dates
back to 1917. So perhaps the Mark IV has some special nostalgic significance
to Shiho. Also, I am interested to learn more about the early days during
which she developed her "Nishizumi school" of Senshado.

I don't agree with the rest of what you said (in regards to WWI tanks) because pre-WWII tanks were pretty much fucking garbage, extremely slow, and not powerful at all. WWII is a great age for this to be done and to continue being done in. Plus, a prequel would still use WWII tanks. The show very clearly is PRETTY FAR in the future from WWII if they have fucking massive land-mass sized boats with schools floating around and 30000000000000000x3000000000000000 truck televisions, etc. So WWII tanks would have probably been used since the entirety of Senshado began in general.

I agree about the cutoff date for tanks though, any more modern than they have here and you end up with just MBTs and nothing else, which as much as I love them - they'd be boring and all the same. Not to mention 90% computer controlled.

The town of Oarai has gone over the top for Girls und Panzer.

Girls und Panzer took over the Spring Festival.

- All night screening festival of all the episodes
- Cardboard cutouts of the characters and banner all over Oarai.
- A real tank.
- Collections of tank ammo.
- Uniforms and costumes for sale.
- The restaurant meals from GuP can be eaten in the same restaurants. (Sadly, no tank cafe. Yet.)

Fantastic finale!

The bit with the Hetzer driving under the Maus and the Tiger P withstanding a gazillion of shots while other tanks were knocked out by grazes earlier episode are a bit of a stretch, but if you want realism, watch a documentary. Ingenuity winning against all odds, I like that.

SAKI SPOKE! I still can't get over that! Nice job keeping her VA a secret until the end. 5/5.

Erwin-chan as cool as ever, even if she is on her head.

This has been an extremely fun ride, certainly the underdog of the past year obliterating almost all opposition. And who could blame them? It had cute little girls and freaking tanks and wanted to entertain, nothing more, that's why it succeeded, it knew what the target audience was and how to please them. 8/10, I really hope we will get more of this franchise, and with the sales, I have faith in it.

Wow what a great show. I give it an 8, largely because I think it was rushed and could have been drawn out even more to a second season, with more room for development and growth, but I'm not sure I'd change anything about it.

Although I actually disagree with the sister. not Nishizuma style. No, Her version of it is better, she values every tank, and used them to their highest capability. She knew her crews, and used that to her advantage. Maybe I'm misreading something, but she maximzed ever bit of combat potential from her tanks, and although there was attrition, it wasn't wasteful attrition.

"Panzer vor!"

Great. The girls claim a thrilling victory true to their style - by the skin of their teeth in a daring do-or-die showdown. A fair win using every available resource including the terrain, with every team contributing. Miho distinguished herself yet again as a brilliant tank commander and a decisive leader. A win also made possible by the fact that her teams performed to the best of their ability and to what the limitations of their machines would allow.

Also, that was a pretty impressive and creative operation to take down the Maus. So ends the story of how a dark horse school team of misfit girls and motley tanks came to win the entire tournament. Superior skill, unconventional tactics and flawless teamwork to overcome the overwhelming odds.

At its heart, this was an honest-to-goodness sports tournament show full of camaraderie and teamwork. For a show with a lot of cute girls, the creators remarkably resisted exploiting them as a source of cheap fanservice. The only 'dirty' thing here was the grease in their tanks and the tactics of a few past opponents. Exceeded my expectations overall, it was quite the fun ride.

I like how the anime managed to keep everything in the right place, the drama, the comedy scenes off battle were really executed well. But of course, had to give real props to their battle animation, so intense that every moment gives me the thrill. The will to win, the determination, i could feel those. It's like Saki but with tanks.

T'was an amazing journey, the last two eps was worth the wait. One of the best for 2013, not because of the moe but because of the action.

When the Student Council is making their presentation on Sensha-do to the students, they mention that some major Sensha-do competition is coming to Japan in a few years and the Ministry of Education wants more teams ready for it. So we have something to look forward to.

The scary thing about that is that it was realistic. Has to do with the amount of armor a tank has and which side the tank is hit. I am not sure what "grazes" you mentioned, but it all has to do with the type of shell fired, where on the tank the shell hit, and how much armor the defending tank had.

Some examples: when the M3 got behind the elefant, the first shots even to the weaker rear armor did not work, what worked was hitting the weakest point in that rear armor. For the Maus, the armor on all three sides was impenetrable for the guns Ooari possessed (though this wasn't true for the tank behind the Maus who got careless and zig-zagged into sight - which I believe was deliberate on Miho's part, she needed to isolate the Maus regardless of any plan), but shooting from above into the grills wasn't. As for the P you mentioned. A Tiger is extremely heavily armored, so from the front the tank was pretty much akin to a fortress requiring dozens of shots to break it down. However the only reason it lasted so long was because of Miho's strategy.

Notice that the Freshman squad had certain tanks they were instructed to attack (the two biggest ones) and that Miho stated that they needed to take out the Maus if they were going to use their city strategy. Even in the previous episode on the Mountain, the entire team was targeting specific tanks (the largest ones), because Miho had already planned the school strategy.

This was because Miho knew that these 3 tanks could have broken through the P with a shot or two, but the other one's couldn't. So far from being "unrealistic", the show was incredibly realistic. Miho's strategy had started from the very beginning, was hinted at throughout the fights, and was only revealed at the end. What incredible writing. That was why the other tank commanders (and her teams) were in such awe of her, her brilliance as a strategist.

I am certain that this is really the case.

Director Tsutomu Mizushima famously gave the following commands to the
animation team:

Make the tanks realistic !
No panty shots !

My impression is that both commands were consistently followed to the letter.
The tanks were realistic in their historical details. Pretty much every rivet was
accurate. The physical motions of the tanks, such as the suspension, was
carefully reproduced. Fans had to look very, very hard in order to find any
mistakes in the tanks. Anybody who did manage to find an error was
thrilled to point it out on MAL.

However, if you watch carefully you can find some aspects that are not
realistic for purposes of drama. To give a very basic example, Miho jumped
from tank to tank when they were stuck in the middle of the river. Some
2chan fans in Japan made careful measurements and they determined
that Miho could not have jumped quite that far. No doubt someday
somebody will write a thick book where they analyze everything in every
episode and point out all of the technical inaccuracies.

I have a question: what is the background music playing during the scene where the M3 Lee is fighting the Elefant and Jagdtiger? I like it - it makes that mini-battle more epic and heroic and stuff.

As for the episode, it didn't have the same impact that 11 did (during which I was saying "No way...!" for a minute straight when the Maus showed up) but it was okay and made for a good finale.

What really gets me is watching that scene where the Porschetiger backs up into a last stand position and shoots...and then reminding myself that this is supposed to be a sports anime.

As for the series in general...well, it started slow and I found that all the scenes that weren't tank combat were mediocre. The show didn't start to rock until the PzIV fired for the first time in episode 3 (and it didn't stop rocking until the very end). I'm still wondering if the production staff changed some major plot points midway through the series, like the drowning thing and the really late introduction of the Chi-Nu crew. The delays and emergency filler episodes made the show's development look...unstable.

Still. Girls und Panzer has driven me to actually import from Japan for the first time (DHL actually got volume 4 to me here in Maryland on the 24th, the release day in Japan, hot damn) and due to my tastes, it may be the only anime I'll ever import. I got a few books on armored warfare history and WWII that look quite nice on the shelf next to the GuP BD box. Now, I just need a PzIVD model from Plamo.

One final note: I'm going to go ahead and claim that of the three mecha series being shown this season, none will have an antagonist mecha as intimidating as the Maus.

You didn't think that way when they stacked a tank on the Maus? Better man than me I guess. Loved that scene, as well as how everything in 11 and 12 was set up to give Miho the chance to face her sister alone.

What really gets me is watching that scene where the Porschetiger backs up into a last stand position and shoots...and then reminding myself that this is supposed to be a sports anime.

Nope, the drowning was foreshadowed in the first episode when Miho didn't want to join Senshado. The problem with the development was that I think the detail proved more intensive then the director thought, however in watching the final episodes I am happy they took the time. There are a lot of scenes that show that the team had everything well scripted from the first episode

There is a Magazine in Japan that has a model you can build every episode. Nice thing about Japan, if you have a fetish itch somewhere there is a scratch for it.

Quite a nice ending I'd have to say a enjoyable anime all around and some lovely characters although for a reason this anime did not appeal to me, it lacked something where I can't put my finger on it, making the anime boring because of it.

Plus that sometimes the CGI really bothered me as I'm a texture artists I sometimes really get upset by bad shading.

In general the series wasn't bad it just didn't appeal to me when I first though, the championships were pretty great, the intense fights and the ending just made it quite decent, but I can't say I actually enjoyed it. 6/10

The production company has been around for a while doing sub-production work, but this was the first time they did their own show with an original story. That was why it seemed rushed. They had to tell the entire story in 12 episodes.

The show has succeeded beyond the dreams of avarice, and because of that they have announced an OVA and a Movie based on the show. A 2nd season would be doubtful before at least 2015 because they don't have the material, and the writer and director (who have been a winning combination I would not like to see broken up), will be focusing on those two works. Should GuP show that it has legs and these two also are money makers (which I believe could happen), then you could see a second season in 2015. I would like to see them expand the world view and de-emphasize the Ooarai team. I think with a bit of character development and a better flushing out of the world this could very well become a well established franchise for the Company.

Perhaps the show won't remain centered on the Ooarai school team, but I
am not quite sure how that would work. They would need some storylines
not based on school teams in a tournament. I do like the idea of exploring
what is going on in the world outside of Japan.

No matter what, the central characters are going to remain to be the five
girls in the Ankou team tank. All of them have had their characters
developed to some extent, and a foundation has been carefully laid to do
much more. However, I could imagine some story arcs that focus solely
in Miho.

In the case of Full Metal Panic, the 2nd season was Fumoffu which
changed the style to a completely episodic high-school centered light
comedy. I wouldn't mind watching a season of that.

In addition, I wonder what happens when the girls get older. Do they
graduate from high school and go on to do something else? Surely
the Japanese Self-Defense Force would be happy to accept a few of
the most talented girls.

To be honest, the tanks, actual tank battles and the whole concept of "sensha-do"/different schools are where it's at. Character development and overall plot is meh at best. But them tank fights are super-sexy, and that's what I'm here for! Overall it's a really solid show, and I love it. Can't wait for the movie.
