For the first two years since I joined MAL, I have refused to rate any entry on my lists. Each user here has his/her own rating criteria, so there's no way to tell for sure what an 8, for example, means when you check someone's list. Since the site forces you to use a 1-10 score system but doesn't recommend any rating method, I thought it would be a waste of time to come up with one when there was almost nothing to gain from it. But, apparently, I had a lot of free time yesterday and I caught myself thinking about adding scores to my list (since it does have some benefits, like providing user compatibility). So, after this short rant, here's how I've decided to rate entries:

I've divided the 10-point rating system into five tiers, each representing a level of enjoyment. Enjoyment here is influenced by technical qualities of the product, like animation, story, music, directing, etc., but these aren't limiting. So even a show with art I didn't like and a badly developed storyline could still receive a 10 if I really enjoyed watching it.

Regarding series that span over multiple entries, there are two different situations. If the series doesn't have a major storyline that connects each entry, has highly different production values from one entry to the other, and one entry doesn't rely on many things from another, I'll rate them separately. But if some of those conditions aren't met (how much depends from case to case), I'll keep the same score for all entries, even if I've enjoyed some of them more than others.
For example: Minami-ke will have a different score for each season, since there isn't really that much connecting one season to another, and the art and general quality varies a lot from one to the other. On the other hand, Kara no Kyoukai is a series of movies that, while relatively episodic, does have a story that connects them together in such a way that even the movies that I liked less have a part in the reason I enjoyed my favorite movie of the series.

First Tier: Really enjoyed these. Entries in this tier are likely to have good characters, story, direction, art, etc. Difference from a score of 10 to a score of 9 is usually related to how often i keep coming back to these series (thinking about the series, searching for images, watching videos on youtube, reading discussions, or even re-watching it).

Second Tier: I liked these anime/manga. A score of 8 means the series has a lot of great points, but doesn't really stand out from most others. A score of 7 means that I found the series mostly mediocre, but it had some points that kept me interested.

Third Tier: I found these boring. Nothing really stood out, and not much happened. If it's rated as 6, I at least thought it had potential at some point, while the ones rated as 5 didn't even have that.

Fourth Tier: I could have liked them if it weren't for a few reasons that really stood out negatively. A score of 4 means I think I'd have enjoyed it if I could, somehow, skip the problematic parts without losing context (bringing it to a 7-10), and a score of 3 means that I probably wouldn't bother even then (I would rate the anime/manga a 5 or 6 without those parts).

Fifth Tier: I see no reason to watch these. Not only didn't they bring any enjoyment to me at any point, but they actually made me wish I could unwatch/unread certain parts (score 2) or even all of it (score 1).
