But then I just watched the first ep and was blown away. Pretty awesome, it has my attention. Really, everything from Shaft I watched.. I liked it very much:

Bakemonogatari, Katanagatari, ef - a tale of melodies/memories.

Shaft didn't make Katanagatari.

I was liking it up to the fantasy-scene at the end. That seemed exaggerated too much, but overall, I liked it.

Quite some derpy faces and QUALITY just in the first episode. I'm not impressed. I did like the visuals at the end though. Interesting story as well.

First, the SOUNDTRACK WAS AMAZING. Yuki Kajiura all over the place.

Other than that, Mahou Shoujo got SHAFTed :/

Surreal visuals + Yuki Kajiura music = anime on crack

This was interesting to say at least. The dream and the surreal scenery reminded me of Black Rock Shooter. The faces are just... also the school is made 90% of glass and the classrooms looks like cages to me. The OP is good. As for the blond girl I must say that there's something creepy about her.

I feel like my mind was just fucked.
I was far from expecting such a dark anime. I thought it'd be a comedy with loli's or something stupid.

On the episode, I really liked her family and the design of the school. Also, I was quite frightened when the walls changed and those furry white things had creepy faces, haha.

Great episode, hope it stays this dark.

Another thing, 9 pages already on the day it came out? This might be the anime of the season. Maybe.

This.

I'll just wait for the prequel/spin-offs of Bakemonogatari to get animated I guess if I want something from SHAFT.

Look's like you're missing the point.
SHAFT is attempting to make something great within the perimeters of a Mahou Shoujo archtype.

And cliche? Seriously, you see dandelion monsters attempting to horribly massacre little girls every day then?

Well I'm sold. Seemed very similar to Nanoha but better. I can always rely on Shaft for a distinctive looking show to balance out my anime viewing. I hope they go all out with the action sequences later on.

I don't care what SHAT is attempting to do.From the way you're saying it,it seems like they're cutting their own legs.
I liked the stark contrast between the Mahou Shoujo elements and the ''attack of the SZS opening'' but come on...it was like the only good part of the episode.I know it's way too early to say that, but the cast is as dull as a doorknob.
Here's to hoping I'm wrong and the characters will turn out to be interesting.

Off the top of my head I can only think of one anime-related story that made the ''cliche+dark'' thingie work:the Higurashi VN.The characters became remotely interesting after a while.I hope I'll be able to say the same thing about Madoka Magica after 3 months or more.

Still I'm eager to know which path it will take later on. Staying as a magical girl anime or toward something else?

Five trippy minutes does not a good episode make. The majority of the episode was boring as hell and could barely keep my attention. :/ I'm going to keep watching for now, but I hope it gets better than 90% boring slice of life moments + 10% WTFery. :/

Also, the faces of the characters are REALLY bothering me. I'm not usually bothered by an anime's art, no matter how bad others perceive it to be, but something about the faces of these characters really irritate me. It's not enough to make me stop watching, but man it kind of hurts to look at. :/

3/5, hoping to eventually actually be "wowed."

Hmm...
Mixed opinions I see...
I for one absolutely loved this episode.
I loved the character designs (thank you Ume-sensei), the action scenes and even the music.
This episode was quite faithful to the 'Mahou Shoujo' genre: bright and optimistic main character, a magical creature to form the contract with, a transformation sequence and even the dream scene. However, Shaft made this episode stand out from other 'Mahou Shoujo' series by focusing more on the characters, rather than the monsters (tendency of most series of that genre). There are also the trademark Shaft visual effects included, which I can't help but think are being overused now but I can deal with it for now.
This episode lived up to my expectation for now but I hope the series has more to offer than a typical 'Mahou Shoujo' plot.

Eh, I'll agree that it doesn't make a good episode, but mahou shojo rarely starts out on a strong note. The first episode of nanoha was almost unwatchable until the last five minutes or so. About the best first episode of a mahou shojo I can think of is Cardcaptor Sakura, and even that wasn't mindblowing, and much of my good impression is based on an excessive love of action scenes on rollerblades. Whatcha gonna do? It is what it is.

Feels a lot more eerier and darker than your typical mahou shoujo anime so it seems pretty cool so far. Will continue watching it. And when she mentioned that she wanted to go to the CD store to get Kamijo, I couldn't help but wonder if she was talking about Kamijo from Versailles and Lariene???? lol

Hm. I can't speak for the rest of the similarities, but that didn't look like a ferret to me. Mahou shojo always get their powers from some manner of adorable mascot with mystical powers who is not as he seems. If you wanted to you could draw a lot of similarities between this and Moetan. The genre is just like that.

I don't know if that's a ferret or not, but at the very least change up their encounter. Of course I'm only taking about the first episode, not saying the rest of the series is gonna be a copy of Nanoha.

The beginning was very awesome and definitely hooked me in, The middle was a bit too yuri-esque(the op too) for my tastes, but eh.

The end was amazing/10 would watch again. Once that so obviously evil girl showed up in the mall all I found myself saying was "What in the flying fuck am I watching"

Anxiously awaiting episode 2...

Don't like the character design and not a fan of magical girls especially when they come with cute little animals but there were some interesting elements. i can imagine a lot worse and cheesier ways of starting a magical girl story so i guess they didn't do an awful job.

I will watch more episodes before i start forming an opinion. At least it had made me intrigue enough to watch more.

Very nice episode Yuki Kaijura did an outstanding job composing her music for a magical girl anime,i've always love her .hack sign tracks and her music for elemental gelade, but this was amazing how she pulled off the music well for a mahou shoujo series for the first time.

The darker atmosphere was amazing, but this was'nt the first time a magical girl anime took on a darker tone,Mahou shoujo lyrical nanoha was the first to practice this when the first four episode of season 1 started out as a typical campy mahou shoujo, but than it surprisingly got darker, madoka is going the same route as Nanoha and I love it :D

I mean don't get me wrong,I love both campy and darker mahou shoujo series, but this was simply amazing, don't let the moe animation fool ya either:D
